Three men were arrested and charged with robbery with aggravation and illegal possession of firearm following an incident at a supermarket in Orange Lane, Montego Bay, St James on July 31.

Charged are: Doni Malcolm, 25, otherwise called ‘CJ’, of Paradise Row; Nathan Campbell, 29, otherwise called ‘Bubinile’, a chef also of Paradise Row; and Matthew Reid, 27, of William Street in Montego Bay, St James.

Reports from the police are that about 10:44am, all three men entered the supermarket where they allegedly robbed the owner of several cartons of cigarettes and $100,000 before escaping in a Toyota Fielder motor car.

Stone-wielding bandits break glass doors to rob FLOW store, while Digicel location sustains damage but keeps them out

Two of the country’s top mobile and Internet-service providers fell victim to vandalism of their stores on the weekend, with at least one having a number of cell phones stolen.

Reports are that both Digicel and FLOW will have to replace their doors, as stones apparently were used to break the glass and facilitate entry.

REAL News understands that a Special Security Services operator alerted the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) that the alarm system at FLOW’s Nevis Street and Market Street store had been triggered.

She also reported that someone appeared to have broken into the building.

Reports confirmed that the perpetrator(s) did, indeed, enter, and they stole a quantity of cellular phones on display.

The quantity and brands of the stolen phones still have to be ascertained by the Police, who carried out a search for the devices, but without success.

This offence reportedly occurred at about 1:50 a.m. on Sunday, August 7.

Just a stone’s throw away, at the corner of Redcliffe and Market Streets, some unknown person(s) also used a stone to smash the glass door of the Digicel store.

The perpetrator(s) attempted to break in through the Market Street entrance; but the glass – though cracked in several areas – remained intact. Accordingly, it does not appear that the bandit(s) were able to breach the door and gain entry into the store.

The Police are investigating both incidents.

One of the most successful film musicals of all time, it told the story of Sandy’s summer fling with John Travolta’s Danny and the difficulties the relationship encounters. In the end the pair reconciles with Sandy appearing in a tight, black leather outfit.

The film was the biggest box-office hit of 1978, and gave Newton-John three huge hit singles, including You’re The One That I Want and Summer Nights, both performed with co-star John Travolta.

And it was a catalyst for change in both her image and her musical direction – shedding her innocent, country-pop image.

Travolta wrote on Instagram that she “made all of our lives so much better”.

“Your impact was incredible. I love you so much,” he wrote.

“We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever!”

Oscar-winning actress Marlee Matlin, who co-starred alongside Newton-John in the 1996 film It’s My Party, called her “the sweetest and brightest light” in a Twitter tribute.

And Dionne Warwick, who recorded a duet with Newton-John in 2006, wrote on Twitter that “another angelic voice has been added to the Heavenly Choir”.

Jamaica native in world’s largest int’l maritime warfare exercise Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

A native of Jamaica is serving in the US Navy and was part of the world’s largest international maritime warfare exercise, Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC).

Seaman Amadou Bah is an undesignated seaman aboard USS William P Lawrence, currently operating out of Pearl Harbour, Hawaii.

A Navy undesignated seaman is responsible for maintaining the ship and its life-saving equipment.

Today, Bah uses skills and values similar to those learned in Jamaica.

“My mother always taught me to work hard and keep pushing even when I may be discouraged or encounter obstacles,” said Bah.

As the world’s largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring safety at sea and security on the world’s oceans, a release from the US Navy Office of Community Outreach said.

RIMPAC 2022, which ran from June 29 to August 4, was the 28th exercise in the series that began in 1971.

The theme of RIMPAC 2022 was Capable, Adaptive, Partners. The participating nations and forces exercise a wide range of capabilities and demonstrate the inherent flexibility of maritime forces. These capabilities range from disaster relief and maritime security operations to sea control and complex warfighting.

The release said the relevant, realistic training programme included gunnery, missile, anti-submarine, and air defence exercises, as well as amphibious, counter-piracy, mine clearance operations, explosive ordnance disposal, and diving and salvage operations.

“The exercises are designed to enhance interoperability between partner nations,” said Bah.

Serving in the US Navy means Bah is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy.

“The Navy provides a global presence at sea to maintain freedom of navigation,” said Bah.

With more than 90 per cent of all trade travelling by sea, and 95 per cent of the world’s international phone and Internet traffic carried through fibre optic cables lying on the ocean floor, Navy officials continue to emphasise that the prosperity and security of the US are directly linked to a strong and ready Navy.

According to Chief of Naval Operations Adm Mike Gilday, four priorities will focus efforts on sailors, readiness, capabilities, and capacity.

“For 245 years, in both calm and rough waters, our Navy has stood the watch to protect the homeland, preserve freedom of the seas, and defend our way of life,” said Gilday. “The decisions and investments we make this decade will set the maritime balance of power for the rest of this century. We can accept nothing less than success.”

Hosted by Commander, US Pacific Fleet, RIMPAC 2022 was led by Commander, US 3rd Fleet, who served as Combined Task Force (CTF) commander. Royal Canadian Navy Rear Adm Christopher Robinson served as deputy commander of the CTF, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Rear Adm Toshiyuki Hirata as the vice commander, and Fleet Marine Force was led by US Marine Corps Brig Gen Joseph Clearfield.

Other key leaders of the multinational force included Commodore Paul O’Grady of the Royal Australian Navy, who commanded the maritime component, and Brig Gen Mark Goulden of the Royal Canadian Air Force, who commanded the air component.

“Since joining the Navy, I’ve enhanced my physical fitness and live a much healthier lifestyle,” said Bah.

During RIMPAC, a network of capable, adaptive partners trains and operate together to strengthen their collective forces and promote a free and open Indo-Pacific. RIMPAC 2022 contributes to the increased interoperability, resiliency and agility needed by the Joint and Combined Force to deter and defeat aggression by major powers across all domains and levels of conflict.

As a member of the US Navy, Bah and other sailors know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes.

“Serving in the Navy means opportunity to me,” added Bah. “My parents are immigrants, and I aim to be an example of growth and the pursuit of greatness.”

The Police are probing two incidents of wounding, one of which involved the use of a cutlass.

A Parham Town man reported to the Police that he was wounded in the back of his head by an unknown man.

Reports are that the victim was sitting on the eastern side of the Public Market, speaking on his cell phone, when he suddenly felt a hard blow to the back of his head.

He immediately looked around and saw a man running in a westerly direction.

The Police reportedly issued the victim a Police Medical Form and later transported him to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre.

The wounding reportedly occurred at about 1 a.m. on August 5.

In an unrelated incident, a 45-year-old Buckleys man was reportedly wounded by a fellow villager.

Reports say the victim was cleaning his jeep on the Buckleys Main Road, where the alleged offender and his girlfriend met him.

Further reports are that an argument subsequently ensued between the three of them.

The victim then reportedly armed himself with a cutlass, which he had retrieved from the back of his vehicle, and a scuffle ensued between the man and the alleged offender.

During the fracas, the victim sustained a wound to his left upper forearm and had to be treated at the hospital for his injury.

This offence reportedly occurred at 6:35 p.m. on August 5.

Olivia Newton-John, superstar singer and actress, dies at 73 Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

Olivia Newton-John, the Grammy-winning superstar who reigned on pop, country, adult contemporary and dance charts with such hits as “Physical” and “You’re the One That I Want” and won countless hearts as everyone’s favorite Sandy in the blockbuster film version of “Grease,” has died. She was 73.

Newton-John, a longtime resident of Australia whose sales topped 100 million albums, died Monday at her southern California ranch, John Easterling, her husband, wrote on Instagram and Facebook.

“Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer,” he wrote. “We ask that everyone please respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”

From 1973-83, Newton-John was among the world’s most popular entertainers. She had 14 top 10 singles just in the US, won four Grammys, starred with John Travolta in “Grease” and with Gene Kelly in “Xanadu.” The fast-stepping Travolta-Newton-John duet, “You’re the One That I Want,” was one of the era’s biggest songs and has sold more than 15 million copies.

“My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better,” Travolta wrote in an online post. “Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John!”

“Physical,” the bouncy, R-rated smash released in 1981, was No. 1 for 10 weeks and was named Billboard’s song of the year despite being banned by some radio stations. An aerobics-friendly promotional clip, filmed in the early years of MTV, won a Grammy for best video.

Both musically and image-wise, she reinvented herself during those years. The blonde, ever-smiling Newton-John initially favoured mild pop-country songs such as “Please Mr. Please” and “Have You Never Been Mellow” and soft-breathing ballads like “I Honestly Love You,” which in 1975 won Grammys for best female pop vocal and record of the year. But she picked up the tempo in “Grease,” especially after Sandy ditched her white sweaters and blouses for waist-high, black leather pants. “Physical” even made Newton-John blush as she told her would-be lover “There’s nothing left to talk about/Unless it’s horizontally” and finally called out “Let’s get animal! Animal!”

“I recorded it and then suddenly thought, ‘Goodness, maybe I’ve gone too far!’” she told Entertainment Weekly in 2017, recalling how the song had been suggested by manager Roger Davies. “I called Roger and said, ‘We’ve got to pull this song!’ He said, ‘It’s too late. It’s already gone to radio and it’s running up the charts.’ I was horrified!”

She had a few hits after “Physical,” but her career declined and Newton-John became more likely to make news because of her private life. In 1992, as she was preparing a concert tour, her father died and she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her marriage to actor Matt Lattanzi, with whom she had a daughter, actor-singer Chloe Lattanzi, broke up in 1995 and a years-long relationship with cameraman Patrick McDermott ended mysteriously. McDermott went missing during a 2005 fishing trip in California and his fate remained unknown years later. Numerous reports alleged that he was living in Mexico, with a new girlfriend.

“He was lost at sea, and nobody really knows what happened,” Newton-John told Australia’s “60 Minutes” in 2016. “It’s human to wonder. But you know, those are the things in life you have to accept and let go. Because whenever you go through difficult times, there’s always those concerns.”

Newton-John’s recent albums included “Stronger Than Before”; a holiday collaboration with Travolta, “This Christmas,” and the autobiographical “Gaia: One Woman’s Journey,” inspired by her battle with cancer and by the loss of her father.

Newton-John married John Easterling, founder of the Amazon Herb Company, in 2008. She was involved in numerous charitable causes, serving as goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme and as national spokeswoman for the Children’s Health Environmental Coalition. She also founded the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre in Melbourne, Australia.

Newton-John was the daughter of German literature professor Brin Newton-John and Irene Bron, whose father was Nobel Prize-winning physicist Max Bron. The Newton-Johns moved to Australia when Olivia was five, but she returned to England in her teens and lived with her mother after her parents broke up.

She had early dreams of becoming a veterinarian but was winning singing contests in high school and before age 20 had toured army bases and clubs and recorded her first single, “Till You Say You’ll Be Mine.”

In 1971, she covered Bob Dylan’s “If Not for You” and began a close partnership with a friend from Australia, John Farrar, who produced the song and later wrote “You’re the One That I Want,” “Magic” and several other hits for her.

She had loved country music, especially the records of “Tennessee” Ernie Ford, since childhood, but her early success didn’t impress critics or some fellow musicians. A Village Voice review likened her to a geisha who “makes her voice smaller than it really is just to please men.”

When Newton-John beat out Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn for the Country Music Association’s top artist of 1973, Tammy Wynette helped founded the Association of Country Entertainers, a club designed to exclude Newton-John and other crossover performers.

But Newton-John had a show business admirer who with her became one of movies’ most unforgettable teams. Travolta had starred in the stage version of “Grease” and for the planned film thought Newton-John would be the “ultimate” Sandy, the nice girl who gets tough in the final act and gets her man.

“I worried that at 29 I was too old to play a high school girl,” Newton-John, who insisted on taking a screen test before accepting the part, told The Telegraph in 2017. “Everything about making the film was fun, but if I had to pick a favorite moment, it was the transformation from what I call Sandy 1 to Sandy 2. I got to play a different character and wear different clothes, and when I put on that tight black outfit to sing ‘You’re the One That I Want,’ I got a very different reaction from the guys on the set.”

She is survived by her husband; daughter Chloe Lattanzi; sister Sarah Newton-John; brother Toby Newton-John; and several nieces and nephews.
