6 August 2022
Honourable Andrew Holness
Prime Minister
Kingston, Jamaica
Dear Prime Minister:
On behalf of the people and Government of Antigua and Barbuda, I extend warm congratulations to you, your Government and the people of Jamaica on the Anniversary of your 60th year of Independence.
On 6 August 1962, the proud people of Jamaica set off on a path that was inconceivable to those who had enslaved and colonized the courageous people of the Anglo-Caribbean’s largest and most populous island.
Capitalizing on United Nations Resolution 1514/XV of 1960, declaring colonialism unlawful, Jamaica chose a path fraught with challenges and high expectations, 60 years ago.
In these past sixty years, the majestic people have shown their prowess in economic development, political maturation, outstanding sporting greatness, and academic leadership that is the envy of universities globally.
Jamaica is known the world over because of its outstanding performance in sports, of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, and as a place of beauty and great charm.
Your beautiful country has been a beacon and inspiration to the countries of the region in its determination to coalesce and contribute to regional development. Your country’s role in sustaining the CARICOM is very well-known and appreciated.
The next sixty years will prove pivotal as our small island-states tackle the challenges associated with global climate change and intensify the search for renewable energy alternatives.
The people of Antigua and Barbuda join hands with the people of Jamaica to engineer a sustainable future, free of injustice and the quixotic use of might to crush freedom.
Congratulations on your 60th Anniversary, Prime Minister, and allow me to reiterate the assurances of my highest regard and esteem.
Honourable Gaston Browne M.P.
Prime Minister

As part of its mission to elevate the voices and actions of the youth in the political process, the Progressive Youth, the official arm of the United Progressive Party will host a Youth Symposium Saturday 6th August at 7 PM.
This event will provide a platform for the youth to contribute their expertise and ideas to formulate practical policies and solutions that will affect their the issues that are important to them.
The keynote speaker will be the newly elected Minister of Mobilization, Implementation and Transportation for Grenada, Hon. Andy Williams. Also on the speaker line-up will be some of the UPP’s youngest leaders, including Leader of the Opposition, Jamale Pringle.
“The influence of youth politics across the globe, underscores the need for more opportunities for the youth to participate in the political process. Youth engagement remains a priority for the UPP and by mobilizing our youth arm, the Party is able to speak more directly to the youth, on topics and issues that this demographic cares deeply about,” said Hon Jamale Pringle, the country’s youngest Leader of the Opposition.
“Young voters care about all of the same issues that any other voter would care about. The difference is that young voters are typically not at the center of traditional politicians’ strategies. Many of our youth feel that traditional politics makes a lot of assumptions and does not always consider the issues that are most important to them,” said Tevaughn Harriette, UPP Candidate for St. Peter.
“The politics of today’s youth puts real life first. It’s not about whether you wear a red shirt or a blue shirt. It’s about whether you have a job, opportunities to believe in yourself and to do the things that you love. Many young people struggled with limited support during the pandemic and now they feel left out of the recovery plans. We want to include our youth in making decisions today that will affect their future,” said Anthony Smith, UPP Candidate for All Saints West.
The Youth Symposium is a 2-hour moderated discussion that will create user-friendly pathways to fully engage the youth (living at home and in the diaspora).
It will lay out a platform for the UPP to unveil its youth agenda and provide an opportunity for the youth to share their vision for various sectors of national development.
A celebration on “International Youth Day” on 12th August, also forms part of the strategy to put democratic power in the hands of the youth, by empowering them to play an integral role in the political process.

The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (TTEC) has restored power to around 60 per cent customers in east and central Trinidad following the outages reported on Saturday morning.
In an updated release, TTEC said work began at around 10.20 am and service was expected to return by 11.30 am to the affected areas.
It advised that responses from its call centres will be slow because of the high number of calls coming in. The commission apologised for any inconvenience being experienced.
Several areas across Trinidad had no electricity early Saturday. Tobago was unaffected.
In an earlier release, TTEC said these outages, which began around 9 am, were caused by a fault in its systems that affected one of the generating plants.
It said the commission is in talks with the power producer to determine the problem and an estimated time for restoration.
Among the areas affected are: San Francique, Beetham, Santa Cruz, Penco Lands, Cumuto, St Joseph, Arima, Toco, Tacarigua, Diego Martin, West Moorings, San Raphael and Penal.

The sweetest summer festival Crop Over 2022 was a success.
Many fetes were sold out, and tourists from the region and around the globe were interspersed amongst the locals at every fete as well as on the road in costume for Grand Kadooment, but if that was not testament enough, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has put her stamp of approval on this year’s edition of the festival as well.
PM Mottley tweeted on Kadooment Day:
“The return of Crop Over and Grand Kadooment after two long years, marks a significant moment for Barbados. Thank you and congratulations to the @NCFBarbados and all stakeholders for an excellent return to form. To all, participating today or otherwise, enjoy yourself and be safe!”
And as one who knows how to throw a grand party herself, her Crop Over fete was back on the cards and according to attendees, it was a blast.
Even the High Commissioner to Barbados & Eastern Caribbean Scott Furssedonn-Wood was impressed. He tweeted:
“Well Barbados, your Prime Minister certainly knows how to throw a party! #cropover2022“
