A significant portion of the Caroni riverbank collapsed overnight north of Ibis Gardens, a Housing Development Corporation site south of the river, sparking panic among residents.

Approximately 20 feet of the riverbank was washed away near a bend in the swollen river near Jacobin Drive.

An emergency crew from the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation’s disaster management crew took footage of the damaged area.

Disaster is feared if the rest of the berm collapses.

Minister of Works and Transport Rohan Sinanan said in a telephone interview that the ministry’s engineers are aware of the problem, but residents said they had not seen any staff from the ministry on Friday morning or Thursday night.

Residents who live close by said the bank began to erode about two months ago and they made numerous reports to Ministry of Works.

They fear with more rainfall predicted, the remaining berm will totally collapse and the main course of the river will flow through the development, causing havoc. The Met Office has forecast more rain.

Some residents have already began to remove their cars and put household items at higher levels.

They are pleading for immediate assistance to erect a temporary steel sheet barricade supported by concrete piles to prevent the berm from being further eroded.

Local government councillor Richard Rampersad and Chaguanas West MP Dinesh Rambally have both been in touch with residents as the Caroni River threatens to overspill in several other areas, such as New Street Extension, where the bank is a mere six inches from the road.

In an interview on Friday, Rampersad said the situation was a potential risk to life and limb, and called on the Works Ministry to take immediate steps to alleviate the fears of the residents of Caroni and Ibis Gardens.

Twenty-four-year-old Dave Singh of Betsy Ground East Canje, Berbice was on Friday arraigned for the murder of 53-year-old  53-year-old Vickram Seubarran who was found with a knife stuck in his back on August 1, 2022.

Singh made his appearance at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court where the charge was read to him by Magistrate Renita Singh. He was accused of unlawfully killing Seubarran between July 31 and August 1, 2022, at his Canje home.

Singh was represented by attorney-at-law Mercaline Bacchus who made an application for bail to which Police Prosecutor Shenelle Matterson had no objection.

Bail was set in the sum of $750,000 and Singh was ordered to return to court on September 13. He was also instructed to report to Central Police Station at 15:00 every other Friday.

Singh, a labourer had reportedly confessed to killing Seubarran after he was arrested by the Police one day after the businessman’s body was found.

Upon his arrest, the suspect told investigators that he and the victim had shared a sexual relationship and that he used to visit the man’s home quite regularly.

He confessed that, on July 31, 2022, the victim had invited him to his home, and they had consumed alcohol and were engaged in sexual intercourse.

Further, he stated that as he was leaving, the victim wanted to have more sexual intercourse, but he refused. This led to an argument and ultimately a scuffle.

He told detectives that he went into the kitchen, took a knife, and stabbed the victim three times, after which he left the house.

Following his confession, he was taken back to the scene, where he pointed detectives to the area where he had disposed of the handle of the murder weapon. The area was searched, but the handle was not recovered.

LETTER: To National Solid Waste Authority From Olivers/Montrula Resident

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

Dear Editor,

I am writing to you to express my disappointment in the National Solid Waste Management Authority on their utter negligence on garbage collection in the Oliver/Montrula area. CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHATS APP GROUP FOR MORE UPDATES

It has been over a week nearing two weeks since the last time garbage was collected in the area. My rubbish bins along with my neighbour’s rubbish has been full to the brim and even other neighbours their garbage is overflowing causing dogs and rats to burst garbage bags and the area looking unsanitary.

I have called National Solid Waste to complain daily about the rubbish not being collected and they told me that a rubbish truck should have collected to the garbage and they never got back to me as promised to find out if indeed the rubbish was collected.

Please, I am kindly asking the National Solid Waste and Management Authority to please collect the garbage in the Olivers/Montreal area.
