In this file photo, this elderly man is seen purchasing paw-paw at the Namdevco market at Harris Promenade San Fernando.

THE National Agricultural Marketing and Development Corporation (Namdevco) says the recent increase in the prices of local vegetables is due to recent adverse weather conditions experienced throughout the country.

The early onset of the rainy season and continuous daily rainfall, it said in a press release on Wednesday, prevented farmers from land preparation activities.

Namdevco said reports indicate that farmers remain unable to prepare lands due to excessive moisture in the fields. Investigations also revealed the unavailability of certain planting materials and seeds which directly impacts production level.

Despite these contributing factors, price behaviour for the year, thus far has been comparatively lower than that of previous years.

Namdevco said it continues to remain committed to leading TT in agricultural marketing and agribusiness solutions that will contribute to the social and economic well-being of all our stakeholders.

Eyewitness: Milestone…for Sparrow

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: INews Guyana

Slinger Francisco, universally known as the “Mighty Sparrow”, is 87!! Imagine that!! That sly, impudent skewer of pretentions, and commentator on all things West Indian since WWII, is still with us…albeit in New York. But then, for us West Indians, that’s home away from home, no?? What mightn’t be so well known is that Sparrow – he was that looooong before the leering “Captain Jack Sparrow” – spent quite some time here pre-independence, when we were just B.G. – for “British Guiana”.

In fact, he wrote one of his top hits – “BG War”-immediately following our Black Friday on Feb 16, 1962, when the PNC burnt down half of Georgetown in their opening salvo to remove the PPP Government. With war drums sounding in the background again, his take is very relevant: “Well they drop a hydrogen bomb in B.G./ Lord have mercy, They drop a hydrogen bomb in B.G./ Lord have mercy, Riot in town mama/ Ah hear the whole place on fire, From Kitty to the waterfront all that/ Burn down flat, flat, flat.”

Then the Master gave his take: “I ain’t care if the whole of B.G. burn down; I ain’t care if all of Bookers burn down/ But they will be putting me out meh way, If they tackle Tiger Bay/ And burn down the hotel,

Where all meh wahbeens does stay!!” Tiger Bay was then a hive of urban slum life, with dozens of “hotels” – pronounced “hut-tel” – with rentals by the hour!!“They lock up over a thousand people; Well that was trouble/ They send for Policemen in the country

To bring unity; But Police and all afraid/ Stand up and they watching stores get raid; Walk in the store take everything/ And when you done set fire to the building….A woman walk in a store on main street

Slippers on she feet/ Dirty petticoat, long time straw hat; And she smelling worse than that!/ But she walk out like a lady; High heels, glasses, jewelry/ The straw hat she had on wearing before/ She take matches and she burn it inside the store!” Reminds you of Mon Repos??

“They send for soldiers quite up in England; With big confusion/ They bring down warships with cannon like peas, To shoot Guyanese/ But Burnham said all right now, I’m the only man to stop this row/ He give we the signal and that’s the case, Now we have peace and quiet in the place.” This, of course, was Sparrow’s sly dig at Burnham, who’d replied, “He who calls off the dog owns the dog” to the request of the Governor to quell the riots.Everybody and their uncle – including Sparrow – knew Burnham was behind the mayhem. They couldn’t say the PPP had infiltrators!!

…in cultural resistance

Talking about the “wabeens” of Tiger Bay, reminds your Eyewitness of one of the unique features of our early urban landscape in what was dubbed the slums. According to one historian, “in the decades after emancipation, one of the ways in which the Afro creole resisted complete cultural domination was that in defiance of the Victorian social norms of modesty, dignity, orderliness, productivity and decorum, they exhibited counter values of gregariousness, bravado, loudness, ribaldry, rowdiness, aggression and even coarse vulgarity.

“This manifested itself was in the practice of ‘cussing’ and ‘buseing’ which he contended was a manifestation of their poverty and deprivation. …It was the women of the ghettos like Tiger Bay for whom this yard culture provided the means to resist white cultural dominance and to fight back against social injustice and racial discrimination.”

…for the “Tigress”

A contemporaneous magistrate, Henry Kirke, in his book “25 years in British Guiana”, wrote: “The black women are as strong as the men, taking the average, I should say they were stronger and quite ready for a fight at anytime.“I remember one woman who was called the Tigress of Tiger Bay was a match for any three Policemen and was a terror in the neighbourhood”!!

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

The Ministry of Health and Wellness has announced that there are no confirmed cases of monkeypox in Barbados.

Following reports that the health officials were investigating a suspected case, Minister Ian Gooding-Edghill issued a statement revealing that the suspected cases tested negative for the rare disease.

“For full disclosure, the Ministry of Health and Wellness will update the public on the results of the one sample which was sent to the Best-dos Santos Public Health Laboratory. Samples from two previously suspected cases were sent for testing at the CAPRHA laboratory in Trinidad. Those results were negative.

“To date, there have been no confirmed cases of monkeypox in Barbados,” said the Minister of Health.

He also assured the public that the Ministry was “fully prepared to handle any cases of monkeypox in our nation”.

Gooding-Edghill noted all possible threats at the ports of entry will be dealt with.

“Please be aware that any travellers arriving at any of our ports with any pox symptoms will be assessed and investigated accordingly,” he said.

The Health Minister explained that when the outbreak started internationally, his Ministry sprung into action by sensitising our public health professionals. He lamented the Ministry’s Port Health staff were well trained to face any global outbreaks of infectious disease.

“Our state of readiness will also involve sensitizing those workers who help us to maintain border control, such as Immigration, Customs, Barbados Port Inc, Grantley Adams International Airport, and others who perform a critical role at our ports of entry.”

“I wish to assure the public that the Ministry of Health and Wellness will continue to take all necessary precautionary steps to minimise the risk of any disease outbreak in Barbados including monkeypox,” he added.

Salada Foods strengthens its workforce | Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News | Loop News

In a companywide process operator training session held last week at Salada Foods Jamaica Limited’s Bell Road location, Salada equipped 33 operators – including two women- with upgraded machine operating skills.

As the first initiative of its kind undertaken by the coffee exporter, the training was designed specifically to upgrade/certify the operators at the company.

“At Salada investing in our people is important. As part of our ongoing commitment to our surrounding community, we continue to find new ways to empower our employees. Currently, most of the operators are from surrounding communities. This training exercise will provide our team with valuable trade skills while optimising productivity and quality in our operations,” said Tamii Brown, General Manager at Salada.

Tamii Brown, Salada Foods General Manager presents to staff as part of a companywide Machine Operator training programme held at the Company’s Bell Road location on July 5.

The four-hour training session spanned three key areas; quality, production and engineering. The session led by the Quality/Production/Engineering Managers of Salada delved into the theoretical content of the training programme, which is slated to continue for the next two months.

Combining industry best practices in manufacturing with key competency standards from the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Agro-Food Processing Operations, the Salada Process Operator Training Programme was developed to standardize and operationalize protocols and procedures for all new and existing operators.

Ajani Miller who joined the company just over a year ago was happy with what he was able to learn from the training exercise.

“I have grown and developed a lot since I have come to Salada. I am more detailed in the things that I do and I take the work more seriously than I did at my first job.

“I come in earlier because of what they have taught us about the seriousness of the job and about being prompt and that is something that they went over in the training.”

Ornel Jackson has been at Salada for seven years and he too found benefit in the training programme.

“The training was very helpful,” he said. “Even though you know the things, sometimes you really need a revision to look back and these new things that you learn, you can use them in the future, so it was very beneficial.”

Bangladesh clinch ODI series from Windies after 9-wicket win | Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News | Loop News

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — Bangladesh won the One-Day International (ODI) series from the West Indies on Wednesday, bouncing back from losing the test and Twenty20 series.

Bangladesh made West Indies bat first and bowled out the home side for 108 in 35 overs. The Bangladeshis took less than 21 overs to reach the target, for the loss of one wicket.

The visitors have won the two ODIs by six and nine wickets for a fifth successive bilateral series win.

The last ODI and tour match is on Saturday at the same Providence Stadium and Bangladesh will be favoured to beat West Indies an 11th straight time since late 2018.

West Indies couldn’t handle spin again, as Nasum Ahmed took his first ODI wickets to start the West Indies collapse and Mehidy Hasan Miraz finished the rout with four for 29.

The home side rode some early luck when openers Kyle Mayers survived a messed-up stumping chance off Mehidy, and Shai Hope overturned an lbw decision to Nasum. But the batters didn’t last much longer.

Mayers was bowled by Mosaddek Hossain trying to defend on the front foot. Then Shamarh Brooks was bowled by Nasum for his first ODI wicket in his second match.

Mosaddek caught Hope who mishit an attempted slog sweep, and in the same over Nasum got captain Nicholas Pooran dragging on. West Indies was 45 for four and Nasum had three for nine from six overs, three of them maidens.

Mosaddek bowled out his 10 overs by the 25th over. He had one for 37, but the pressure he and Nasum built led to West Indies taking more frustrated swings.

Rovman Powell was out for 13 trying to flick medium-pacer Shoriful Islam, and Brandon King charged and missed Mehidy to be bowled on 11.

Akeal Hosein was too slow coming from the non-striker’s end and run out on two and West Indies were 72 for seven.

Nasum was brought back for his last two overs and finished with three for 19 off 10, earning the man of the match.

As soon as he left, Romario Shepherd was bowled by Mehidy on four and Alzarri Joseph edged Mehidy behind and West Indies were 86 for nine.

Mehidy claimed Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai to leave tailender Keemo Paul stranded on 25 not out.

Moti-Kanhai got the wicket of Najmul Hossain Shanto but fellow opener Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das made no drama of the chase. Tamim finished the game with his seventh boundary to be 50 not out off 62 balls for his 53rd ODI fifty. Liton was 32 not out off 27 with six boundaries.
