La secretaria interina del Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales (DRNA), Anaís Rodríguez, informó en RADIO ISLA que esa agencia inició una investigación debido al presunto envenenamiento de árboles en un parque del Condado. 

Según trascendió en los medios de comunicación, los hechos ocurrieron en la calle Ashford luego de que el lugar recreacional fue vendido por la suma de $145,000 a Krug Property LLC. 

“A principios de esta semana iniciamos una investigación y enviamos al personal técnico, en conjunto al Cuerpo de Vigilantes, a hacer una investigación a raíz de lo que salió en las redes (sociales) y en cada uno de los medios. Personal técnico nos ha pedido una semana para culminar con la investigación y la preparación de un informe que nos pueda poner en posición de saber si, en efecto, hubo envenenamiento, si tal envenenamiento fue causado por mano humana y poder identificar quién fue y cuándo”, detalló Rodríguez.

Premier Brantley Commends CBIs Students for Participating in Environmental Poster Contest 2022

Charlestown Nevis, July 7, 2022 (NIA) — Three students grabbed the top positions among 11 students of the Cecele Browne Integrated School (CBIS) who participated in the Ministry of Tourism’s Exposition Nevis 2022 Environmental Poster Contest. The theme was “Keep Nevis Clean.”

At a brief prize-giving ceremony held at the school recently, Hildreth Tross captured the top spot followed by Jaquoiya Francis in second place and Kijaunte Hobson in third.

The top three winners and the school were presented with gifts and certificates of appreciation by Hon. Mark Brantley, Premier of Nevis and Minister of Tourism. The gifts included school supplies from the ministry; and platinum sponsor Latitude Seventeen, a development consultant and project construction management company, managed by Martha Isbister.

Each of the 11 participants received a $100 gift card from Latitude Seventeen. They were encouraged to include art supplies when shopping with the gift card, as they continue to develop their art skills.

In brief remarks, Premier Brantley congratulated the students and staff while registering his satisfaction with the students’ skills.

“I am so happy to be here at this institution of learning to congratulate all of you youngsters for the fantastic job that you’ve done… Let me congratulate your principal and the entire staff and all of the students for the incredible job that you have been doing. You have always been at the epicentre of these types of activities and we’re really proud.

“When I look at what you’ve produced here – the creativity, the thinking that went into it and of course for you, the posters that you’ve created, I really do think that Nevis is in good hands. So I want to thank all of you,” he said.

Mr. Brantley told the students that protecting the environment on Nevis was of critical importance to all residents and visitors alike.

“Protecting the environment is important to all of us. A clean and healthy Nevis means that we have a clean and healthy environment. It means that we live healthier lives.

“It is important to us in tourism because clearly, people come to our island and we want our island to be clean. We want our island to be healthy. Part of that is controlling what we do in terms of garbage disposal, also ensuring that we recycle; we reduce the amount of garbage that we generate; we reduce the number of plastics that we generate, and I thought that this theme for this event was very timely,” he said.

Mr. Brantley who is also the Minister of Education noted that Exposition Nevis is an annual activity hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, and expressed his pleasure that the school which is a critical part of what they do, was a part of the activity after a two-year hiatus.

Other remarks were made by Ms. Vanessa Webbe, Tourism Education Officer and Ms. Lydia Lawrence, Senior Clerk at the Ministry of Tourism; and Mrs. Jennifer Liburd, a teacher at CBIS.

Shinzo Abe: Japan ex-leader assassinated while giving speech

Japan’s former prime minister Shinzo Abe has died in hospital after he was shot at a political campaign event.

Abe was shot at twice while he was giving a speech on a street in the city of Nara on Friday morning.

Security officials at the scene tackled the gunman and a 41-year-old suspect is now in police custody.

The suspect, named as Tetsuya Yamagami, admitted shooting Abe with a homemade gun, and said he had a grudge against a “specific organisation”, police said.

Several other handmade weapons, similar to those used in the attack, had been confiscated after a search of the suspect’s house, police officers told a news conference.

Explosives were also found at the home and police said they had advised residents to evacuate the area.

The suspected shooter told officers he had a grudge against a specific group he believed Abe was connected to, police said, adding that they were investigating why the former PM was targeted out of other people related to the group.

Asked by a member of the Japanese media whether the gunman’s intention was to kill Abe, police say only that Mr Yamagami admitted to shooting the former PM.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida condemned the attack, saying: “It is barbaric and malicious and it cannot be tolerated.”

This attack was “an act of brutality that happened during the elections – the very foundation of our democracy – and is absolutely unforgivable,” Mr Kishida said, speaking before Abe’s death was confirmed.

Abe suffered two bullet wounds to his neck during the attack, and also suffered damage to his heart, doctors said.

He was said to be conscious and responsive in the minutes after the attack, but the 67-year-old’s condition deteriorated.

Doctors said no vital signs were detected by the time the former prime minister was transferred for treatment and he had to receive a blood transfusion in hospital.

Abe was giving a speech for a political candidate at a road junction in the southern city of Nara when the attack happened.

Witnesses saw a man carrying what they described as a large gun fire twice at the former PM from behind. Abe fell to the ground as bystanders screamed in shock and disbelief.

Abe had a security team with him, but it appears the gunman was still able to get within a few metres of Mr Abe without any sort of checks or barrier.

Photos circulating in the aftermath of the shooting showed the suspect standing just behind Mr Abe as he gave his speech.

Security officers dived onto the attacker, who made no attempt to run, and seized his weapon.

Local reports say he is a former member of Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force, Japan’s equivalent of a navy. He is said to have left active service in 2005.

Abe’s speech was part of a campaign for his former party, the Liberal Democratic Party, as upper house elections in Japan are due to take place later this week.

Ministers across the country were later reportedly told to return to Tokyo immediately.

On Japanese social media, the hashtag “We want democracy, not violence” was trending, with many social media users expressing their horror and disgust about the incident.

Abe, who was Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, held office in 2006 for a year and then again from 2012 to 2020, before stepping down citing health reasons.

He later revealed that he had suffered a relapse of ulcerative colitis, an intestinal disease.

While he was in office, he pushed more assertive policies on defence and foreign policy and had long sought to amend Japan’s pacifist post-war constitution.

He also pushed for an economic policy that came to be known as “Abenomics”, built on monetary easing, fiscal stimulus and structural reforms.

He was succeeded by his close party ally Yoshihide Suga, who was later replaced by Fumio Kishida.

Gun violence is extremely rare in Japan, where handguns are banned – and incidents of political violence are almost unheard of.

In 2014, there were just six incidents of gun deaths in Japan, as compared to 33,599 in the US. People have to undergo a strict exam and mental health tests in order to buy a gun – and even then, only shotguns and air rifles are allowed.

Prominent voices across the world have been quick to condemn the incident, with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson calling it a “despicable attack”.

The US ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emanuel, said Abe had been an “outstanding leader of Japan and unwavering ally of the US”.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol called the attack an “unacceptable act of crime” and extended condolences to “the Japanese people for having lost their longest-serving prime minister and a respected politician”.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said his country was shocked by the attack.

He added that “this unexpected incident should not be associated with Sino-Japanese relations” and had no comment when asked about Chinese social media reaction.

Comments gloating over the attack on Mr Abe have dominated Chinese social media, and have also surfaced on Korean platforms.

China and South Korea have historically had complicated and fraught relationships with Japan. Abe, known for his military hawkishness, was unpopular with citizens of both countries during his term in office.

ABLP Puts PR Before Plans: He Believes That We Believe His BS

The ABLP administration has the record for the greatest percentage of failed projects anywhere in the world.

Not necessarily that they are the worst performers in the world, but because of their strategy of putting Public Relations before Plans.

Whereas rational governments include PR as part of their Plans, Gaston Browne begins with PR, as his team scrambles to come up with a workable Plan.

Look at the water situation. Burford actually provides a weekly update on water, or as many would say, “the lack thereof.” And every week, the dates change, the strategies change the plans change. When the PR is more reliable than water supply, it means that we have entered a whole new realm of BS.

We see the same thing playing out with Jolly Beach. Gaston Browne begins with a big announcement that he has to retract because the announcement was premature. Then he repeats it as he scrambles to get a plan in place.

Again, whereas rational governments conduct due diligence before making an announcement, Gaston Browne puts the @cart before the horse” or as young people say @ass-backwards.”

We see a similar situation developing with LIAT, where Gaston Browne is preempting his PM colleagues in making pronouncements about the future of LIAT, before solid plans are in place. Let’s see where this one ends up.

Based on this pattern, it is not surprising that Gaston Browne has had over 15 ground breakings or as the UPP has coined a phrase that I like “ground fakings.”

I truly believe that Gaston Browne believes in the phrase “Fake it Till You Make It.” But my humble advice to Gaston Browne is “Boss, You’ve Already Made it and We Get it.” When Gaston Browne Makes a statement, count to 10, maybe 100 and wait for the next shoe to drop.

Gaston is full of GAS in name and nature. Sadly, he Believes that We Believe His BS.

The EC Dollar remains strong after 46 years of being pegged to the US Dollar at a fixed rate of EC$2.70 to US$1.00 on 7 July 1976.

The Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), Timothy N.J. Antoine, says, “the peg means 46 years of a stable EC dollar on which we can rely; the value today is the value tomorrow and the next day.”

He added that over the 46 years, the EC dollar had experienced relatively low inflation, and in spite of a number of challenges over these 46 years, the ECCB continues to manage foreign reserves prudently, thereby maintaining the strength and stability of the EC dollar.

Governor Antoine says this stability provides the people of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) and investors with a sense of confidence in its value.  “A stable EC dollar allows us to enjoy the benefits that some larger countries in our region and the other parts of the world do not currently enjoy.”

Governor Antoine gave credit to the founders and framers of the Monetary Union and all those who have served over the years including the ECCB Monetary Council; ECCB Board of Directors, and Management and staff of the ECCB and the people of the region.

“This is something of which we should be justifiable proud and long may it continue,” says Governor Antoine.

EE.UU. exportó millones de barriles de petróleo en junio mientras los precios en gasolinera marcaban máximos

Estados Unidos exportó el mes pasado más de 5 millones de barriles del petróleo liberado de las reservas estratégicas del país, mientras el Gobierno se esfuerza para bajar los precios de combustibles en el mercado interior, según datos recogidos por Reuters.

Los contratos de futuros de petróleo en EE.UU., actualmente cotizan por encima de los 100 dólares por barril, mientras que los precios de gasolina y diésel se aproximan al récord histórico nacional registrado el mes pasado, de 5,016 y 5,816 dólares por galón, respectivamente.

Según datos del Servicio Aduanero de EE.UU. y fuentes de la industria citados por Reuters, cargas de petróleo fueron enviadas el mes pasado a Italia, Francia, Países Bajos, la India y China, mientras que envíos similares se registraron en abril y mayo.

El pasado 31 de marzo, el presidente Joe Biden autorizó la liberación de un millón de barriles de crudo al día durante los próximos seis meses de la Reserva Estratégica de Petróleo, con el objetivo de reducir los precios de la gasolina nacional. El 1 de abril, había 568 millones de barriles almacenados en cuatro lugares del sur de Luisiana y de Texas.

El mes pasado, las reservas estratégicas cayeron a su nivel más bajo desde 1986, según datos del Departamento de Energía estadounidense citados por la agencia. En medio de los precios récord de los combustibles, el presidente Biden advirtió a los estadounidenses que tendrán que soportar este nivel durante “todo el tiempo que fuera necesario” y culpó a Rusia de las subidas.

Los precios mundiales de la energía se han disparado debido al aumento de la demanda tras la pandemia de coronavirus, mientras los países intentan reactivar sus economías. Las sanciones occidentales contra Rusia, uno de los principales exportadores de petróleo y de gas natural, también han contribuido al aumento de los precios de la energía.

El Servicio Nacional de Meteorología (SNM) en San Juan, advirtió que operadores de embarcaciones pequeñas deberán continuar ejerciendo precaución debido a vientos del Este de hasta 20 nudos causando oleaje picado de hasta 6 pies a través de la mayoría de las aguas locales, excepto por las aguas costeras del Sur y Oeste de Puerto Rico, donde el viento y el oleaje deben permanecer por debajo de 15 nudos y 5 pies, respectivamente. Existe un riesgo alto de corrientes marinas para playas a través de la costa Norte central a Noroeste de Puerto Rico, mientras que un riesgo moderado de corrientes marinas continúa para la mayoría de las playas restantes.

Los niveles de impacto de hoy son leves para tronadas, oleaje y calor moderado para inundaciones y alto para las corrientes marinas. Aunque se espera una disminución en la humedad e inestabilidad hoy, los efectos locales y el calor diurno ayudarán al desarrollo de aguaceros y tronadas aisladas, con el impacto mayor esperado a través de sectores del interior y el Oeste a noroeste de la isla.

Para el Este de Puerto Rico y el área metropolitana de San Juan, cualquier cantidad de lluvia significativa medible resultará de aguaceros arrastrados por los vientos alisios moviéndose sobre tierra desde las aguas en la mañana y aguaceros desarrollándose a favor del viento desde las islas locales y El Yunque en la tarde.

Las condiciones, mayormente de buen tiempo, con actividad de aguaceros limitada, prevalecerán en el resto del área. Cualquier periodo prolongado de lluvias de moderadas a fuertes pudieran resultar en acumulación de agua en carreteras y en las áreas de poco drenaje a inundaciones urbanas y de riachuelos, especialmente sobre áreas afectadas por lluvias previas. Los vientos se tornarán más del Este de 10 a 15 mph, aumentando a cerca de 20 a 25 mph con ráfagas más fuertes y variaciones de la brisa marina en la tarde.

Las temperaturas máximas del día variarán desde los altos 80s a cerca de 90 grados a través de áreas bajas. Los vientos alisios del Sureste darán paso a índices de calor de 102 a 106 grados, mayormente a través de sectores costeros del Norte, Sur y Oeste de Puerto Rico.

El expresidente de Estados Unidos Donald Trump fue destituido como director de su compañía de medios poco antes de que la empresa fuera citada en el marco de una investigación por los reguladores financieros, según un expediente legal visto por AFP el viernes.

El documento muestra que el hijo de Trump, Donald Jr, y varios otros también fueron destituidos en junio como ejecutivos de Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), que incluye su red social Truth Social.

Esta plataforma dijo que se trata de una información falsa e insistió en que Trump sigue presidiendo la empresa.

La información fue publicada por primera vez el jueves por el Sarasota Herald Tribune, el diario de la ciudad de Florida donde TMTG tiene su sede.

La agencia de regulación financiera estadounidense y la fiscalía de Nueva York investigan a TMTG por usar una empresa ficticia llamada Digital World para entrar en bolsa.

La notificación de TMTG ante el Departamento de Estado de Florida de la destitución de Trump como director está fechada el 8 de junio, solo unas semanas antes de que Digital World recibiera la citaciones legales para que testificaran sus directores y otros ejecutivos.

El sitio web de TMTG tiene en su menú un acceso a la “Junta Directiva”, pero aparece en blanco.

Pero el comunicado publicado el jueves en la cuenta oficial de Truth Social señala que “Donald Trump permanece en la junta de Trump Media and Technology Group” con el cargo de “presidente”.

Trump creó Truth Social tras la eliminación de sus cuentas en Facebook, Twitter y YouTube tras el asalto al Capitolio del 6 de enero del año pasado, ante acusaciones de que había usado las redes sociales para incitar a sus seguidores a usar la fuerza para torcer el resultado de las elecciones presidenciales de 2020.

Antes de ser censurado, tenía 89 millones de seguidores en Twitter y usaba la plataforma constantemente.

Sin embargo, el lanzamiento de su plataforma Truth Social en febrero estuvo plagado de fallas y aún no está disponible fuera de Estados Unidos.
