Eyewitness: Looking back…at “our Warriors”

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: INews Guyana

By the time you, dear readers, read these ruminations of your Eyewitness, the first home game of our Warriors, against the Jamaica Tallawahs, would be over. You would know whether the Warriors won or lost.

But, as all of you should know by now, your Eyewitness is a “cricket tragic” — one who lives and breathes the game in general — and ever more so when the Warriors are involved!! And what else could he be?? For what it’s worth – and, over the years, it’s been worth plenty in winning scads of bets!! – your Eyewitness is possessed of a “black tongue”. So, whatever he wishes for an event to happen, it happens!!

And just so you know, he never uses his gift to enrich himself – he reserves it for important things, like Warriors’ games!! So, he’s going out on a limb here and now to declare that they won!!

Wasn’t he here when the GAW was birthed ten years ago?? Wasn’t he there at the birth, and then attended every home game they played at our Providence Stadium?? Didn’t he shout himself hoarse so many times in egging them on, along with the rest of Guyana (it appeared). And that really wasn’t an exaggeration, because all those who had not gone at the Stadium were glued to their TVs and smart phones following “their boys”. The rest of the Caribbean marvelled at the fervent, vociferous loyalty of the Guyanese fans.

Whatever they might’ve heard about divisions among our people in our politics, those were clearly jettisoned when they pushed through the turnstiles at the gates!! In the stands, and especially on the mound, we were as one, cheering and groaning, and giving each other high fives and hugs as the particular play demanded!! It was cricket – lovely Warriors’ cricket. In the past ten years, the Warriors have proven to be the winningest team in the CPL T20 tournament – but have been the bridesmaids and never the brides. But because your daughter hasn’t gotten married, do you disown her??

This year, they haven’t exactly started out as house on fire – winning 1; another washed out, and losing three. But hey!! They’re the only team with five more games to play, and with this Eyewitness, he believes in the saying “NEVER SAY NEVER!!” He’s going out on a limb to predict that they’ve won last night’s game. But even if they didn’t, he’s a true believer!!

And you know why he can be so confident? It’s because of our secret weapon – you, the Guyanese fans at the games!! We’re like the 12th man ON THE FIELD!! Every opposing cricketer over the last decade who’s played against the Warriors at Providence has remarked about this “F” Factor: the fan factor!!

…and our cricket evolution

Now having expanded from Test Cricket to T20 should tell you that your Eyewitness’s no old stick-in-the-mud. He’s also changed from straight legged jeans to bell bottom jeans to baggy jeans, and now to “skinny” jeans!! But not to ODI. He gotta draw the line SOMEWHERE, and that’s it!!

But he must say he’s having some challenges digesting some of the newer innovations of this year’s CPL Tournament – especially this Cricket Carnival. Up to now, he’s felt that T20 Cricket WAS Carnival Cricket, judging from the way our cricketers played the game with gusto and the way our fans partied in the stands and the mound. So, while he has some issues with our alcohol consumption, he can digest DDL introducing their special El Dorado Master Blender CPL T20 Rum. For good or bad, rum’s always been part and parcel of Guyanese cricket. What did you think was in all those bags the fans always brought to games?? But the carnival outside the stadium??

What’s that got to do with cricket??

…at Russia’s war

Recently, both India and China asked Russia to focus on ending the war in Ukraine. Perchance it’s a signal that they see the tide’s shifting against the Ruskies? And the Ruskies might lose it all??Keep tuned!!

Barbados relaxes mask mandate, COVID travel protocols end at midnight Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

Barbados will be relaxing the mask mandate and ending the COVID-19 travel protocols from 12:01 am on Friday, September 23.

Acting Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw announced major changes to the COVID-19 Directive during a press conference at Ilaro Court this evening.

Bradshaw stated that the mask-wearing will be optional, however, there will be exceptions for healthcare, education, public transport and those in prisons.

“The wearing of masks generally will be optional, however, mask-wearing remains mandatory for persons in nursing homes, private hospitals and senior citizen homes; persons in healthcare institutions including staff, visitors, clients and patients; all institutions where medical and dental services are provided; persons in prison, including staff, prisoners and visitors; staff and students at all educational institutions; all nurseries and daycare facilities for both children and adults and of course, persons who have COVID-19, as well as, persons who are travelling on public transportation,” stated the acting Prime Minister.

She maintained that the relaxation did not signal that Barbadians should stop being their “brother’s keeper”. She stressed that the elderly, people with “increased risk for illness” and those who maintain contact with such individuals should continue to wear masks.

“Individuals who are at increased risk for illness or death due to COVID-19, particularly the elderly and those with health conditions, may find it prudent to continue wearing masks around others. Similarly, those who have come into close contact with such vulnerable persons, you are encouraged to wear masks and to practise good hand and respiratory hygiene,” Bradshaw recommended.

Broaching on the removal of the travel protocols, the Acting Prime Minister added that unvaccinated and vaccinated travellers will not be required to be tested for entry to Barbados.

Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Senator Lisa Cummins, who was also in attendance stated tourism partners and source markets will be notified of the changes.

The Tourism Minister said that the termination of the travel protocols will cause “a significant boost” this upcoming winter season.

“I certainly know that for the local tourism community, the industry partners…this is going to be a significant boost to our winter season which is upcoming because many of the people who are coming from our major source markets are they, themselves living in countries where these restrictions have been long removed and they are no longer in place except in some limited circumstances….and so it allows for a seamless transitions for visitors from their home countries to here in Barbados,” she said.

“If I am uncomfortable in my space, if I feel as though I am in a room where there are more people than I may be comfortable with or I feel as though I am symptomatic, I will wear my mask and that is a personal choice we will both make here and when we travel and when visitors come here as well,” continued Minister Cummins.

Work Commences on the New “Royalton Chic” Formerly the Halcyon Hotel

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

Demolition work is currently underway at the property formerly known as the Halcyon Hotel located at Dickenson Bay Antigua.

With a phase 1 completion and re-opening target of November 2023, construction crews are already on the ground engaged in the demolition of the structures to the far North of the property.

The project will see the addition of 227 rooms to the country’s room stock in the new Building F, the second phase of which will add 8 new water bungalows to the property’s Northwestern landscape.

Portions of the old property will be refurbished (Blocks A to E), with a host of new restaurants in addition to spas and a state-of-the-art gym facility will be added as well. A completely new back of the house or employee quarters will be constructed.

Tourism Minister the Hon. H. Charles Fernandez was granted access to the work site on Tuesday to get a firsthand view of developments.

“I am absolutely delighted that work has commenced on this project that will not only add to our hotel room stock, but which will create employment opportunities for Antiguans and Barbudans in various areas”, Minister Fernandez stated.

Well over 500 persons will be employed at the property upon completion.

He continued that, “The Royalton Chic brand is high-end and will attract the type of clientele that will enhance the country’s tourism image internationally”.

Royalton Antigua General Manager Rudy Richardson says the company is very pleased with the support received from the Government and People of Antigua and Barbuda that has contributed to the success of the brand thus far, and hopes for even more success in the future with the commissioning of the Royalton Chic luxury brand in November 2023.

The Blue Diamond Group is overseeing the management of the project with elements of construction sub-contracted to local companies.

Fedee Challenges Claims That Saint Lucia Is Continuing To Break Tourism Records – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: St. Lucia Times News

Former Tourism Minister Dominic Fedee has taken issue with suggestions that Saint Lucia is continuing to break tourism records.

He described the industry’s performance as lacklustre and lukewarm.

“What we are seeing is a lack of planning, a lack of proactiveness. We have made more trips to Nigeria and to Dubai where we have no planes coming from rather than taking care of our traditional markets like the US and the UK to make sure that these markets are firing on all cylinders,” Fedee told a news conference on Thursday.

And he warned against highlighting one aspect of tourism, rather than looking holistically at the industry.

“I debunk statements made by the Ministry of Tourism suggesting that the industry is breaking records – we’re not. We have a long way to go,” the former Anse La Raye-Canaries MP declared.

By way of example, he quoted Saint Lucia Tourism Authority (SLTA) figures indicating that in 2019 before COVID-19, stayover arrivals at this time were 262 381 while this year the figure up to July was 209 929.

The former Minister declared that this represented over 50 000 less than where the country was in 2019.

In addition, he observed that the cruise sector at this time in 2019 based on the SLTA’s latest report, accounted for 484 631.

” Now we are at 164, 044 which means that we are over 300,000 behind where we were if we had to look at our winter season for the cruise industry. This would mean we are presiding over the worst summer in the cruise season that we have seen in the last 25 years,” he asserted.

Fedee also quoted figures for the yachting sector.

He said it was shocking that a Tourism Minister would be happy with those numbers.

However, Fedee acknowledged that in the defence of the Minister of Tourism and those in charge of tourism, Saint Lucia was recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

But he warned that people must be careful how they make pronouncements as the recovery continues.
