World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has launched a new report calling on global leaders to take urgent action on non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

According to the WHO, NDCs are responsible for 17 million premature deaths annually.

To accelerate action, the WHO Director-General renewed the two-year appointment of Michael R. Bloomberg as the organisation’s Global Ambassador for Non-communicable Diseases and Injuries.

It is Bloomberg’s third reappointment as Ambassador.

His first appointment in the role was in 2016.

The new WHO report on non-communicable diseases is entitled “Invisible Numbers: The true scale of non-communicable diseases.”

There’s also a data portal that for the first time, brings together all WHO data related to NCDs for 194 countries.

A WHO news release said the report and portal highlight the extent of the global NCD burden, risk factors, and the progress each country is making in efforts to combat these diseases and conditions.

Every two seconds, someone under 70 somewhere in the world dies of an NCD.

Non-communicable diseases like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and lung disease now outnumber infectious diseases as the top killers globally.

“This report is a reminder of the true scale of the threat posed by NCDs and their risk factors,” said Dr. Tedros

The WHO noted that the public’s awareness of the links between NCDs and their risk factors such, as tobacco and alcohol consumption, unhealthy diets, and lack of physical activity, is low.

But the organisation observed that the majority of people surveyed across all countries support a wide number of proven interventions and policies that can reduce deaths from NCDs, such as incorporating more green spaces in urban health design and increasing taxes on tobacco.

While every Member State of the United Nations has committed to reducing premature death from NCDs by one-third by 2030 – an effort that could save millions of lives – few countries are currently on track to achieve it.

As a result, the WHO has asserted that urgent global efforts are needed to get back on track to reach Sustainable Development Goal targets and reduce premature deaths from NCDs.

La advertencia es desde las 10 de la mañana hasta las 5 de la tarde del jueves.

Se esperan índices de calor de 102 grados Farenheit, aunque para algunas áreas pueden reportarse temperaturas de 107 a 111 grados.

Se recomienda mantenerse hidratado y evitar exposiciones prolongadas al sol. Además, hay que velar por familiares, vecinos y mascotas.

Dans le cadre des Journées européennes du patrimoine, le public qui avait effectué le déplacement jusqu’à Grand-Rivière a eu la possibilité de visiter l’habitation Beauséjour. L’occasion de découvrir une nouvelle marque de rhum en Martinique : le Rhum HBS.

L’habitation Beauséjour est située à l’entrée de la commune de Grand-Rivière. Il s’agit d’une exploitation agricole de 60 ha qui domine le bourg de la commune. Sur cette exploitation agricole, se trouve un domaine où ont toujours résidé les différents propriétaires. A l’occasion des JEP, le domaine privé a exceptionnellement ouvert ses portes au public qui a découvert sa richesse culturelle. Le site a appartenu notamment au sénateur Amédée Knigth qui l’a vendu à la famille de Lucy qui en est l’actuelle propriétaire. Ce domaine a conservé intactes les traces de l’histoire de la Martinique. Il existe une grande terrasse entourée d’un très grand jardin où l’on peut trouver de nombreux arbres fruitiers comme des manguiers deux fois centenaires, des cacaoyers ou de la noix de muscade.

Pratiquement au centre de cette terrasse, se trouvent trois pavillons qui servent de maison d’accueil, de bureaux. L’espace accueille aussi l’habitation principale de l’actuel propriétaire. Le tout est complété par une cuisine, un garage et un bassin. On y trouve également, en contrebas, 6 maisonnettes où logent des ouvriers de l’habitation et des retraités ; plus loin, un grand espace est consacré aux ateliers ou hangars. Ces derniers ont servi au fonctionnement d’une sucrerie, puis d’une distillerie qui a fermé ses portes en 1958. On y a ensuite conditionné de la banane. Depuis deux ans, une distillerie y a ouvert ses portes.

La canne de retour

Sur cette exploitation agricole, différents végétaux ont été cultivés au fil des ans : indigo,  cacao, canne à sucre, banane. Depuis 2007, la canne à sucre est de retour sur l’exploitation. La production de 52 ha est vendue à la distillerie Saint-James et, depuis trois années, 8 hectares sont consacrés à la production d’un rhum commercialisé sous l’appellation « Rhum HBS ». Il s’agit d’une production très artisanale. « Une tonne de cannes coupée à la main y est broyée tous les jours », expliquent les responsables de l’exploitation. La récolte s’effectue durant toute l’année sur des parcelles non mécanisables. La canne est broyée par un petit moulin d’origine brésilienne. Après fermentation, le vin de canne issu du jus est distillé dans un alambic. 

La production de rhum est d’environ 100 bouteilles par jour. Le « Rhum HBS » est une production de niche que l’on peut trouver chez des cavistes. Une infime partie est exportée vers l’hexagone ; il s’agit de rhum blanc. La marque s’est aussi lancée depuis 2 ans dans la production de rhum vieux, breuvage qui sera disponible dans plusieurs années.

Trois ouvriers sont affectés à cette tâche ; il en manque un 4ème. Brice, le distillateur, lance d’ailleurs un vibrant appel. Il recherche de toute urgence un ouvrier afin d’étoffer son équipe.

L’habitation ouvrait exceptionnellement ses portes à l’occasion des journées du patrimoine.

 A l’occasion de la journée mondiale contre l’Alzheimer, le Cinéstar aux Abymes organise une séance publique du film « AL » le vendredi 23 septembre à 19h.

 Al est sorti sur les écrans en mai 2021 et celte nouvelle diffusion vendredi sera l’occasion pour les Guadeloupéens de le découvrir ou redécouvrir. « De tous les films que j’ai réalisé c’est sans aucun doute celui où j’ai eu le plus peur, explique le réalisateur guadeloupéen Christian Lara, j’étais totalement ignorant de cette maladie. Aussi j’ai dû rencontrer des médecins, des malades, des accompagnants et des proches pour toucher du doigt leur réalité quotidienne ». Pour son 25 ème long métrage, il a choisi d’aborder un vrai sujet de société. « Je suis et je resterai un conteur d’histoire, celle d’un couple qui s’aime avant la maladie. Et si j’aime autant ce film c’est pour son message de générosité qui nous concerne tous. Aussi j’invite le public à venir à cette séance publique à l’occasion de la journée contre la maladie d’Alzheimer. Je pense que le spectateur en ressortira grandi ». Les deux acteurs principaux Caroline Ducey dans le rôle d’Hélène Mombin et Luc Saint-Eloi dans celui de Pierre Mombin incarnent magnifiquement ce couple malmené par les caprices de la maladie. Une histoire d’amour où la femme aura cette intelligence suprême de ne jamais s’opposer au malade, de ne jamais lui dire « tu ne te souviens pas ? » mais au contraire de réaliser que plus rien ne sera jamais pareil. «Caroline Ducey est extraordinaire et d’une sensibilité à fleur de peau. Elle nous transporte dans son univers de femme qui fait tout pour que son compagnon puisse continuer une vie agréable ». Cette séance se déroulera en présence des acteurs et du réalisateur. La présence de chacun, au-delà de voir un très beau film, c’est aussi la marque d’un soutien au cinéma antillais.

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 19, 2022 (SKNIS): Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance M. Drew, Minister of Health and Information, has made new assignments under his ministerial portfolios.

Dr. Jenson Morton has been assigned the position of Director of Health Institutions within the Ministry of Health while Dr. Patrick Martin has been appointed as Special Adviser to the Ministry of Health, and Mrs. Adelcia Connor-Ferlance has been designated as Press Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister.

Dr. Jenson Morton holds a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and History from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad, and an M.B.B.S (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) from the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica. He has served as a medical officer in the Department of Surgery under Dr. Cameron Wilkinson from 2015 to 2019. He then served as the District Medical Officer for the Old Road and Sandy Point districts, as well as providing on-call medical coverage for the Pogson Hospital from 2019-2022.

Dr. Patrick Martin is a Pediatrician. He holds a B.A. in Chemistry (Summa Cum Laude) from the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas, USVI. He obtained his M.D. from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington D.C, USA. From 1986-1989, he did his Residency in Pediatrics at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center in Miami, Florida. He is a Certified Physician Executive, Certifying Commission in Medical Management, the American Association for Physician Leadership. Dr. Martin has worked as a Teacher of Science and Mathematics at the Basseterre Senior High School (1976-1979); Resident Assistant at the U.V.I (1980-1982); Tutor/Counsellor, North Carolina Health Manpower Programme in North Carolina (1983). He has served as Pediatrician at the Joseph N. France General Hospital (1989-2004), as Medical Chief of Staff (2000-2004), and as Chief Medical Officer (2004-2016) at the JNF General Hospital. He has held other positions, accolades, and is a member of several professional memberships.

Mrs. Adelcia Connor-Ferlance is a trained broadcast journalist who has worked in communications, public relations, sales and marketing and hospitality for almost 20 years. She received her training from the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica, and pursued a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of the West Indies Open Campus in St. Kitts.

Intence Release Vybz Kartel and JahShii In “Correction” Diss Track

Dancehall star Intence is raising some eyebrows with his new song “Correction,” in which he seemingly takes shots at Vybz Kartel, Jahshii, and Kartel’s right-hand man Sikka Rymes.

Intence is not new to controversies and beefs. In fact, his career is built on controversies, so it’s no surprise he is stirring things up after unleashing his new track on the airwaves. The Jett Life deejay started the Futuristic Music and Crash Dummy Productions-produced song saying he doesn’t have to call any names, leaving fans to speculate from his rhymes.

While Vybz Kartel appears to be his primary target in the song, Intence injected a quick line about an artist who shot themself. “Dah one deh bad fi shot himself,” he deejay. Fans were quick to point out that JahShii admitted in an interview with Anthony Miller of Entertainment Report last year that he once shot himself. The interview went viral for that, among other reasons.

Intence seemingly emphasized this line aimed toward Vybz Kartel, who is currently incarcerated. “No boy cant gimme chat weh nah f*** suh uno build,” he deejays. The dancehall artist again took more shots at the Worl’Boss in the punchline where he sings, “Laugh after dem, ha ha ha ha haa, a nuh me make uno naa get nuh pun na na naa.”

Still, it might be a stretch to single out Vybz Kartel as the primary target in those lines since the former Portmore Empire deejay is currently engaged to his girlfriend of seven years, Sidem Öztürk. She has been visiting him at the Horizon Adult Remand Center, where he is housed, so perhaps he is also getting “conjugal” visits. Of course, in Intence eyes, he is not getting any “pun na na naa.”

One particular line is a clear shot at Kartel’s right-hand man, Sikka Rymes, who was shot three times in December 2019 in St. Andrew. “Dem couldn’t mad fi bad mi up, dem never bad a Liguanea,” Intence deejays, seemingly alluding to when the artist was shot in the same location.

Intence also released the song with an accompanying music video directed by Jerro Will. Fans have also been reacting to the diss record, with most praising the “New Gear” deejay for the effort.

“To be honest intence flow smooth and clean every song intence drop it have a different flow this artist really a lyrical machine,” one fan wrote while another added, “To diss Vybz Kartel and JahShii in the same song a no normal badness man say anything a anything mi like the vibes for dancehall but Jashii a coward him nah go respond and Sikka no ready for this level of lyrical warfare.”

“Intence hit the target straight with this one am bumping it for the rest of the year dem man better retire,” another fan wrote.

Mike Tyson Offered Remy Ma Cars To Spend Night With Him, Fat Joe Shares

Boxing legend Mike Tyson is not disputing that he once made an offer to Bronx rapper Remy Ma to sleep with him in exchange for a luxury car.

An interview clip has gone viral with Mike Tyson sitting down with Fat Joe and Angie Martinez, and it’s quite cringy. Mike Tyson and Fat Joe discussed the story on the former’s podcast called Hotboxin’ With Mike Tyson podcast, which premiered on Sept. 15. According to Fat Joe, the incident happened in 2004 when Remy Ma was not only a big-time rapper but she was already established and had several hits under her name, like the track “Monster” featuring Swizz Beatz.

While many were tuned in to the young Remy, who oozed gangster with a splash of sexy, it seemed that Tyson was also watching her. According to Fat Joe, Tyson invited him to his mansion and specially requested the Bronx rapper to come too. “Mike invites me to the house and he says bring Remy Ma with you,” Fat Joe begins.

“We go to the house. He opens the door butt naked,” Joe says. “Mike opens the door ass naked. I’m like, what the fuck is up, bro?’”

Joe added, “He takes me [on] a tour of the house, I’m not lying to you, every room I walked in, there was a chick in every room. In every fucking room, jacuzzi… I’m like what the f**k, Iron Mike, this guy lives a f****g life.”

Mike Tyson, who previewed the story by saying that it is an old story and no one should be mad, also shared that he told Joe to leave the then 24-year-old Remy Ma behind. “I said, ‘Joe, just leave Remy Ma,’” Tyson chimed in. “She was upstairs and I was blocking her. She was, ‘No, no.’”

Joe also confirmed that the boxer “wanted to keep Remy Ma.” When Remy refused, Tyson also tried his best to entice her with material possessions.

“He made her offers. He showed this convertible Benz new shit. He was like, ‘You can keep this, all you gotta do is spend one night.’ She looked at me like, ‘Joe, if you don’t get me the f**k out this house.’ I was like, ‘Mike, we can’t do that. This is my sister’ … He offered her some f**king 500 Benz, I was like, ‘Oh my God.’”

Mike Tyson’s documentary is currently playing on Hulu. The documentary, although not supported by Mike Tyson, does bring into focus the boxer’s extravagant lifestyle but also the difficulties and hardships he faced before becoming a famous boxer, and also his interactions with women as a powerful and famous man.

Tyson’s career suffered immensely when he was accused by a beauty queen, Desiree Washington, of raping her in 1991.

The former heavyweight world champion was arrested in July 1991 after being accused of raping Washington at a Canterbury hotel in Indianapolis. The victim had claimed that the boxer had attended one of her pageant rehearsals in the town, and he had invited her to his hotel room, and while there, he forced himself on her.

In February 1992, Tyson was found guilty of rape after a short two-week trial. He was sentenced to 10 years in jail but eventually had four years suspended and was released early in March 1995.

It’s unclear if his podcast will address the rape trial.

Durant son déplacement en Martinique et en Guadeloupe, Rodolphe Saadé, Président Directeur Général du Groupe CMA-CGM, géant du transport maritime, a annoncé le déploiement de 7 nouveaux porte-conteneurs propulsés au biogaz pour renforcer et moderniser la desserte des Antilles françaises. Ils seront livrés progressivement à partir de 2024 et on compte parmi eux 4 navires de 7 300 EVP et 3 navires de 7 900 EVP, avec 1 385 prises Reefer chacun. Afin d’accueillir ces navires de plus grande capacité, le Groupe CMA CGM accompagnera la modernisation et l’augmentation des capacités des grands ports maritimes de Guadeloupe et de Martinique, et l’agrandissement des quais. Véritables hubs de la Caraïbe et de l’Amérique du Sud, Fort de France et Pointe à Pitre seront le point de départ du trafic de transbordement vers la Guyane, Saint Martin, Saint Barthélémy et le Nord Est du Brésil.

Ces mesures rentrent dans le cadre de l’objectif zéro carbone du groupe, fixé en 2050. La desserte de la Martinique et de la Guadeloupe pour les importations se trouvera améliorée par le renouvellement de cette flotte maritime.
