WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Simona Halep’s first appearance at Wimbledon since winning the title three years ago is going just as good as it did the last time.

The 16th-seeded Romanian reached the semifinals and stretched her winning streak at the All England Club to 12 matches by beating Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday on Centre Court.

Halep missed the chance to defend her title at Wimbledon twice, first in 2020 when the tournament was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic and then again in 2021 when she had to sit out with a left calf injury.

“I struggled a lot last year,” Halep said, “and now I’m just trying to build my confidence back.”

In the semifinals, Halep will face Elena Rybakina. The 17th-seeded Rybakina beat Ajla Tomljanovic 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 on No. 1 Court.

Rybakina, a 23-year-old Kazakh, is playing at Wimbledon for only the second time in her career. She lost in the fourth round last year.

In the men’s quarterfinals, two-time champion Rafael Nadal was playing Taylor Fritz on Centre Court while Nick Kyrgios was to face Cristian Garin on No. 1 Court.

Halep is making her 10th appearance at Wimbledon and has reached the semifinals for the third time. She is the only Grand Slam champion left in the women’s tournament.

“I’m very emotional right now, because it means a lot to be back in the semis,” Halep said.

The match against Anisimova appeared to be as straightforward as her first four victories at this year’s tournament — all came in straight sets. But the 20th-seeded American broke Halep when she was serving for the match at 5-2.

Anisimova then had three more break points when Halep again served for the match at 5-4, but the Romanian won five straight points to finish the match.

“She could crush the ball in the end, and I didn’t know, actually, what to do,” Halep said. “But I just believed in myself. I said that I have to stay there, strong on my legs.”

Halep injured her calf more than a year ago, forcing her to withdraw from the French Open and Wimbledon. She started working with Patrick Mouratoglou, the former coach of Serena Williams, in April.

In the other match, Rybakina dropped her first set of the grass-court tournament but broke her Australian opponent early in the second and third sets. She finished the match with 15 aces.

“I started a bit slow. I didn’t serve that well. Maybe I was nervous,” Rybakina said. “Ajla, she played really well, she was defending really good and I just tried to focus on my serve to find my way and I found it.”

A miner is now in a critical condition after he was allegedly chopped and beaten by co-workers on Monday evening during a row over alcohol at a backdam in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).

Injured is 41-year-old Ryan Joseph of the North West District (NWD), Region One (Barima-Waini).

Though he received severe injuries since Monday evening, the man is now seeking transportation from the Puruni Landing in Region Seven in order to be properly treated at a hospital.

Reports reaching this publication indicate that the miner was paid a pennyweight of raw gold on Monday and after being paid, he proceeded to imbibe with co-workers, one of whom is the employer’s nephew.

Later in the evening, Joseph and the nephew along with two other co-workers became embroiled in a fight over the purchasing of alcohol. During the fight, Joseph was badly beaten and chopped about his body.

It is unclear why persons have waited until now to escort the injured man to a medical facility to seek medical attention.

The man’s friend, who spoke with this publication, indicated that she has since contacted the Bartica Police Station to have cops escort the man to the nearest medical facility.

When contacted, Region Commander Dion Moore said he has not received any information on the incident but will look into the matter.

Faf du Plessis, who captained the Kings to a second successive Hero CPL final in 2021, will return for this season. He will be joined by Tim David and David Wiese who were both instrumental to the Kings success during the 2021 season.

This season will also see the return of Scott Kuggeleijn who played for the Kings in 2020, where he finished as the tournament’s leading wicket taker that season. The Kings have one more overseas spot left to fill and this will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Kings will have six more spots to fill at the Hero CPL draft with details of these picks released during the draft show which will be broadcast this Thursday 7 July – at 9am Eastern Caribbean Time.

The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) has published its 2021-2022 Annual Report and Statement of Accounts for the financial year ended 31 March 2022.

The Report, which was published on 30 June, reveals that the Bank recorded a net loss of $49.1 million for the year ended 31 March 2022 compared to a net profit of $25.2 million in the previous financial year.

The net loss for the year was largely driven by losses on foreign investment securities combined with a decline in interest income earned on foreign reserve assets, as interest rates globally remained at historically low levels over the year.

The Governor of the ECCB, Timothy N. J. Antoine said, “the current state of the global economic and geopolitical environment can be characterised as unprecedented and complex and the economies of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU), like the rest of the world, felt the weight of this difficult environment during the 2021/2022 financial year”.

He said, despite the weak global financial environment which resulted in the ECCB’s first
loss-making year in six years, the Bank continues to manage the reserves prudently thereby maintaining the strength and stability of the EC dollar.

Governor Antoine says that the 2022/2023 financial year opened with even more challenges than the previous year did and this reality will shape the Bank’s direction for the new year.
