50 Cent is moving on from Starz and has signed a new deal to produce an unscripted series for NBC Universal’s online streaming platform Peacock.

On Thursday, the rapper announced that he signed a new deal to produce an unscripted series for Lusid Media and Peacock. The new deal will see Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson producing a three-project partnership with Lusid Media. The first project is reportedly already underway, but so far, no details have been revealed by either 50 Cent, who left Starz in September after a $150 million deal that saw him producing the hit series “Power” and several spinoffs.

According to Variety, the rapper-turned-producer is expanding his resume as executive producer as one of the unscripted projects is a true crime series that will air on Peacock in 2023.

“I am excited by the kind of stories we’re going to be bringing to life together, and can’t wait for the first project to reach Peacock next year,” Variety quoted the rapper.

In the meantime, Lusid Media President Zak Weisfeld spoke about 50 Cent joining the team.

“50 Cent is a storytelling phenomenon, and we’re excited by the combination of our track record in the unscripted entertainment space, and the dynamism of 50 and the G Unit team,” he said.

In the meantime, fans can continue to enjoy the 50 Cent-produced “BMF,” which was recently renewed with a star-packed cast for a second season, and he also has several new shows set to hit the big screen- “Hip Hop Homicides” airing on WeTV in November and a horror movie series deal with Eli Roth and 3BlackDot.

Licences for Guyanese fisherfolk: Govt pursuing diplomatic solution as private sector continues to complain

The Guyana Government is actively working to resolve the ongoing fishermen licence issue, in order for Guyanese to operate and fish in Surinamese waters.

This was communicated by President Dr Irfaan Ali on Friday, expressing that Government is not happy with the way fisherfolk are currently treated. However, action is being taken and he further assured that this matter will not affect pending areas of interest between the two countries.

“When you’re in Government, you have to run Government in a very responsible way. It’s a mature thing to be in Government. The President is not an immature position to be in. We have one issue with fishing. That has not affected the other issues… Are we happy with the way the fishermen are treated? No, we’re not happy. Are we taking steps? Yes, we’re taking steps,” Ali commented.

Addressing the effects of this situation, the Head of State shared that his Administration is concerned about the private sector’s view and the effects created from this situation. However, he reiterated that it is being handled from a diplomatic standpoint.

“It affects the way in which the private sector view things, of course, because the private sector is complaining and we’re very concerned.  We are approaching this fishing issue from a diplomatic level, applying all the measures that the Government can apply and finding a solution. That is what we’re working towards.”

The matter of Suriname’s harassment of Guyanese fishermen and the Dutch-speaking republic’s continued refusal to grant licences to them, has been a topical issue in recent times that even escalated to the point where Guyana’s Ambassador in Suriname, Keith George, was summoned last month to a meeting with the Surinamese Foreign Minister, Krishna Mathoera, on this very issue.

Following the high-level meeting in Guyana during August 2021 between President Dr Irfaan Ali and Surinamese President Chandrikapersad Santokhi, the two leaders had issued a joint press statement indicating that the age-old issue of licences for Guyanese fisherfolk to operate in Suriname’s territorial waters would be addressed.

These fishermen operate from the Corentyne coast and have to use the Corentyne to get access to the Atlantic where they get most of their catch. The Corentyne River is considered Surinamese territory. Currently, the licences are issued to Surinamese businessmen at US$100 per year and rented to the Guyanese fisherfolk at US$3000 annually.

About 150 boats operate from the Number 66 Fisherman’s Co-op Society, thus providing direct employment for about 800 fishermen. Additionally, some 200 persons are employed in providing services which include transportation, fish vending and repairs to machinery and equipment. Guyana has already said that it will be bringing this matter before the Caribbean Community (Caricom), since Suriname is also a member state.

Email correspondence sent from high officials in the Surinamese Government, to their Guyanese counterparts, revealed that Suriname had promised Guyana, that the fishing licence for Guyanese to fish in Surinamese waters would have been issued on January 1, 2021.

In the email dated December 13, 2020, which was seen by this publication, Surinamese Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Prahlad Sewdien had written to Guyana’s Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, informing him that the fishing licences would be issued from January 1 of the next year and that they would try to have preparations completed within two weeks. The email also acknowledged the list of fishermen that Mustapha had sent to Sewdien, while also suggesting various actions that should be taken to complete the process of issuing the licence, under Surinamese law.

Despite previous promises, Suriname has failed to issue to Guyanese fishermen licences to operate in Surinamese waters.

Students and teachers of St George’s College, Barataria, will begin classes at UTT Valsayn on Monday, following closure of the school for extensive repairs to the school building.

A release from the Chief Education Officer on October 21 addressed to the principal and teachers said arrangements would be made for the students to occupy the UTT’s Valsayn campus at Spring Village, Valsayn on October 28.

“The arrangements include relocation of furniture, assignment of classes, and relocation of furniture. You are kindly asked to update the parents of these arrangements and to inform them of the date in which their child/children will be required to report to physical classes at this location. Your usual cooperation is anticipated.”

The school’s alumni association began fundraising to assist the school on Tuesday. In a post on its Facebook group it said, “We are working with the principal, staff, the Education Ministry and the Parent-Teacher Student Association (PTSA) to determine what the immediate and longer term needs are and we will keep everyone abreast of details as information comes to hand.

“For the moment, we have been advised that the keys to the temporary location (UTT Valsayn) should be received this week as that location also needed to be prepared to house the staff and students.”

The school closed on October 10 and went to online teaching after the ceiling fell in the hallway at the front of the staff room on October 6 following heavy rains.

On October 9, the school’s PTSA posted a message in their Facebook group from principal Dr Asha Ramraj-Sookdeo saying the school would be closed from October 10 as the Education Ministry continued to assess and rectify the situation with the roof and ceiling infrastructure.

“Please ensure that our students are working constructively and reviewing all the work they have done so far for term.

“We apologise for this inconvenience, however at this point it is unavoidable to ensure the safety of our staff and students.”

A virtual meeting was held by the association on Friday to discuss orientation, transportation arrangements, safety issues, responsible use of the UTT facility, and parents’ concerns.

Efforts to reach Ramraj-Sookdeo or Education Minister Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly on Friday to ask about the extent of the repairs needed and the possible length of the temporary relocation were not successful.

Brian Manning’s granny dies at 105

THE matriarch of the Manning clan, Esther Manning, has died at the age of 105.

Esther Manning was the widow of Arnold Manning, and mother of former prime minister Patrick Manning who died on July 2, 2016.

She died on Saturday morning at the family’s Cocoyea Village, San Fernando home where she and her husband raised the late PNM leader along with his sisters, Dr Petronella Manning-Alleyne, Pamela and Panzetta.

In an immediate announcement, Anglican priest, Rev Dr Knolly Clarke noted the loss of two of stalwarts, Esther Manning and Wayne Charles, whom he said contributed to the musical life of the church.

San Fernando East MP Brian Manning – the son of Patrick Manning – said his grandmother was very much involved in the musical landscape of the Anglican Church, particularly St Paul’s Anglican on Harris Promenade, San Fernando, where he and his family attended every Sunday.

“She was a long- time manager of the St Paul’s Anglican Church. She managed the Sunday School, which I attended while growing up. She led the church choir and the Mother’s Union for an extended period of time.

“During my entire childhood, I think, she was the choir leader.”

Manning said his late grandmother was very influential in his upbringing and in him becoming the man he is today.

“In terms of discipline,” he explained.

“She was a great disciplinarian. She taught discipline and ensured my parents brought us (he and his brother David) to Sunday school every Sunday.

“She would call and complain if they didn’t,” he said.

He recalled visiting her during the election campaign where she gave him her blessings. His visits were curtailed during the covid19 pandemic because of her frailty and he did not want to accidentally infect her. Brian and his wife, Shelly Dass, contracted the virus in December 2021.

“She was ailing for some time. I passed by the house a few times when the restrictions were lifted and she was going strong.”

He said her health waned earlier this year, but she recovered, much to everyone’s surprise.

“She was doing well but on Saturday she transitioned.”

Funeral arrangements are yet to be arranged.
