The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has noted the contents of a letter published in the Wednesday, September 14, 2022 edition of the Stabroek News, indicating that the Commission took a decision at its Statutory Meeting on Tuesday, 13th September, 2022, not to extend the period for the ongoing Claims and Objections exercise.

Accordingly, it must be categorically stated that the Commission took no such decision.

In this regard, it is imperative for the Commission to clarify that a request was submitted by a political party citing reasons why the Commission should consider extending the Claims and Objections period.

However, although some preliminary discussions commenced at the Statutory Meeting on Tuesday, 13th September, 2022, it was suggested, and decided, that the Parliamentary Political Parties be consulted before a determination is made.

Consequently, the Commission is scheduled to meet again today, 14th September, 2022 at 13:00hrs to further discuss the request for extension where a decision would be made accordingly, and the outcome communicated to the public.

In view of the foregoing, the Commission is reminding all stakeholders to always await, and rely on, official communication from GECOM in relation to its decisions and work programme.

El Centro Nacional de Huracanes (NHC, por sus siglas en inglés) informó que el Invest L96 se convirtió en una depresión tropical, y que se encuentra a 800 millas náuticas de distancia al este de Puerto Rico.

El evento atmosférico se encuentra en la latitud 16.6 grados Norte, longitud 49.6 grados Oeste, y se mueve hacia al oeste a 14 millas por hora. El NHC informó que podría convertirse en tormenta tropical entre esta noche y mañana, jueves, y se espera que deje lluvias para el fin de semana.

Sporting Lisbon defeats Tottenham Hotspur

England’s Tottenham Hotspur conceded two injury-time goals as they slumped to a 2-0 Champions League defeat against Sporting Lisbon of Portugal yesterday in Portugal.

Tottenham Hotspur had a number of good chances but could not take them and looked on course to earn a point in Portugal.

However, in the 91st minute Paulinho headed in from Pedro Goncalves’ left-wing corner to put Sporting Lisbon ahead.

It got better for Sporting Lisbon as another substitute, Arthur Gomes, hit a fine, low strike to make it 2-0 and hand Spurs their first loss of the season.

Sporting Lisbon are top of Group D on six points after two victories, with Tottenham Hotspur second on three points.

In the other group match, Eintracht Frankfurt won 1-0 against Marseille in France thanks to a goal from Jesper Lindstrom in a game marred by crowd trouble.

Region on alert for development of latest tropical depression Loop Barbados

Meteorological agencies across the Caribbean and United States are closely monitoring a tropical disturbance that has the potential to develop into a tropical cyclone.

The US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) forecast that Tropical Disturbance AL96, which is located about 800 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, has a high chance to develop into a tropical cyclone in the coming days.

If that occurs, the system will be called Fiona.

NHC noted upper-level winds are not particularly conducive for additional development, only a slight increase in organisation would result in the formation of a tropical depression.

The system is forecast to move generally westward over the tropical Atlantic during the next day or so, and move near or over portions of the Leeward Islands on Friday.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service is urging residents of the Leeward Islands to prepare for any eventuality.

“Given the very high uncertainty of whether AL96 will become a tropical cyclone before reaching the area and even higher uncertainties of the forecast track, intensity and size, if it were to develop into a storm, it is impossible to predict what exactly will become of this system, at this time,” the Meteorological Service said.

“At the reasonable worst-case, disturbance AL96 poses little or minimal threat, but this is likely to change and an alert may be required in a day or two. To be safe, have your hurricane disaster plan prepared and monitor this system closely.”

De nouvelles formations pour de futurs agents techniques auront lieu, dans le but de valoriser les déchets, alors que l’enjeu écologique devient de plus en plus important pour la planète.

Les responsables de l’IMFPA (Institut de formation professionnelle pour adultes) et ceux du SMTVD (Syndicat martiniquais de traitement et de valorisation des déchets) viennent de signer une convention dans le but de former des agents techniques de réception et de valorisation des déchets. D’une durée de 975 heures, la formation s’étalera sur sept mois, du 12 septembre prochain au 31 mai 2023. Elle s’articulera autour de deux activités-types : l’accueil des usagers/clients et la réalisation d’opérations d’exploitation sur un site d’apport volontaire de déchets. 

A l’issue de la formation, les stagiaires devront être capables d’assurer la qualité du tri des apports dans une déchèterie, une relation de service dans le cadre réglementé d’une déchèterie. Ils devront aussi être en mesure de maintenir la déchèterie en capacité de fonctionnement. En mettant à disposition ses 13 sites de déchèterie, le Smtvd favorisera le bon déroulement des formations. Le syndicat permet ainsi aux stagiaires d’acquérir la maîtrise des bons gestes professionnels.

En tant qu’acteur majeur de la CTM dans le pilotage de la formation professionnelle pour adultes, l’Imfpa a pour mission de favoriser l’accès à l’emploi en renforçant les compétences des demandeurs par la qualification et la professionnalisation. Sa mission est également d’apporter une réponse territoriale aux besoins en compétences des entreprises.

Selon le ministre des Affaires sociales et du Travail, Odney Pierre Ricot, le gallon de la gazoline passera de 250 ? 570 gourdes. Il est toutefois subventionn? ? hauteur de 158 gourdes, ? en croire le ministre.

Quant au diesel (gasoil), il ne sera plus subventionn? par l’Etat. Le prix passe de 353 ? 670 gourdes.

Le k?ros?ne sera vendu ? 665 gourdes contre 352 gourdes auparavant.

Eiffel Tower to go dark earlier as the City of Lights saves energy Loop Jamaica

Lights on the Eiffel Tower will soon be turned off more than an hour earlier at night to save electricity, the Paris mayor announced Tuesday, as Russia’s war in Ukraine deepens an energy crisis in Europe.

Mayor Anne Hidalgo said the iconic tower, that is normally illuminated until 1 am, is only one of the city’s monuments and municipal buildings that will be plunged into darkness earlier in the evening as the French capital — like the rest of France and Europe — faces risks of power shortages, rationing and blackouts when energy demand surges this winter.

Russia has reduced natural gas supplies to several European countries as they support Ukraine, sending prices for gas and electricity surging.

It’s fuelled inflation and raised fears about shrinking supplies as the heating season draws near, forcing countries to enact conservation measures and relief for consumers and businesses.

While some European companies have reduced or halted production as energy prices surge, the European Union is looking to pass proposals to ease the crisis.

Lights on the Eiffel Tower will be turned off after the last visitor leaves at 11:45 pm, starting September 23, Hidalgo said.

Other landmarks operated by the city, such as Saint-Jacques tower and City Hall, will be turned off at 10 pm.

“It’s symbolic, but an important step,” Hidalgo said, brushing off criticism that Paris authorities could do more to reduce energy consumption by 10% — the target set in July by President Emmanuel Macron as part of a nationwide “sobriety plan” to conserve energy.

For safety reasons, streetlights will stay on across Paris and the ornate bridges over the Seine River also will remain illuminated at night, Hidalgo told reporters.

To align with France’s savings plan, she said she will press the government to adjust the lighting on national monuments in Paris, such as the domed Pantheon and the Arc de Triomphe, the famous Napoleonic arch that dominates the Champs-Elysees Avenue.

Paris authorities also aim to save energy by moving back when they turn on the heat in public buildings by a whole month, from mid-October to mid-November.

They also plan to lower the temperature in public buildings by one degree, from 19 to 18 degrees Celsius (66 to 64 degrees Fahrenheit) during office hours, and to 16 C after hours and on weekends.

People have converged on the location, a shopping mall that houses at least 12 different businesses.

Amid concerns over the high recidivism rate at the Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF), Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has disclosed that halfway houses are not under consideration.

However Pierre disclosed that the government was considering structural changes at the prison.

Generally, halfway houses assist inmates nearing release with employment counseling, job placement, financial management assistance, and other programmes and services.

“There was a time when the prison seemed to be doing well as far as that is concerned,” Pierre, responsible for National Security, said regarding recidivism.

“It seems that we are falling back a little, ” he observed.

“Things need to settle. There has been some activity going on that we need to settle. There was COVID – you find that prisoners had to be put in quarantine. There were a lot of activities happening,” the Castries East MP noted.

Nevertheless, he told reporters  on Monday that now things had settled he was sure there would be changes at the prison.

Last month the Director of Corrections Hilary Herman described the reintegration of inmates into society after serving their time as the the ‘missing link’ at the BCF.

According to Herman, forty-seven inmates returned to the prison between March 26th and July 30th.

And he lamented that with no support system or guidance to prepare them for the outside world, chances were that the cycle of imprisonment would continue.
