Tobago carnival will be officially launched on Saturday and Tobago Hotel and Tourism Association vice-president Carol-Ann Birchwood-James is anticipating at minimum 95 per cent occupancy for the October 28-30 festivities.
In an interview with Newsday on Wednesday, Birchwood-James said although figures are still being collated, the outlook is positive.
“We sent out to the members to see how the accommodation is going – that was about a week or so ago. We are at 60 per cent filled up to now. We are hoping by the time bookings start – I know that bookings started on the boat already so when the bookings start then we should come up to a good 95 or so per cent.”
Although the majority of visitors are expected to be Trinis, Birchwood-James said “quite a few foreigners have booked.”
She is optimistic the inaugural carnival will be a hit.
“The music is in place – I see we have quite a few songs, there have been quite a few band launches and so on, and there is a buzz in the atmosphere with regards Tobago carnival. We have to admit it – there is a buzz in the atmosphere. People are very excited, and they are coming.”
Although there have been some criticism ahead of the carnival, Birchwood-James believes the festival will only grow. “We would learn from this experience. We’re hoping to make a very good impression.
“We have to keep in mind, it’s a Tobago carnival and not a carnival in Tobago. It’s a Tobago carnival and therefore whatever we produce must be unique. We must make a good first impression so people would want to return.”
General manager at the newly opened Comfort Inn and Suites in Scarborough, Maria Yip-John endorsed Birchwood-James’ sentiments.
“Carnival is looking very good for the carnival period, and apart from that we have several groups that are inquiring. We’re expecting that it is going to be a very good weekend.”
Marcel Van Reeken, the general manager of Blue Waters Inn, Speyside said: “There are quite a few reservations for that time. Right now, we are closed for some renovation works till halfway into October. The reservations for when we reopen are quite good. October is definitely looking good.”
Flights to Tobago for the October 28-30 weekend are almost sold out. A check on Caribbean Airlines website on Wednesday showed all flights from Piarco to Tobago sold out from October 26 to October 28, Return flights are also limited with just two early morning Sunday flights still available. The next available return flights are on November 3.
All sailings to Tobago on October 28 are sold out.
Bago Jam, a free soca concert, will be held at Shaw Park carpark on Saturday to launch the carnival.
Additionally, a number of private events have been earmarked on the calendar beginning September 25.
The island’s inaugural October carnival will be held under the theme Ritual, Revelry, Release. The calendar of events was revealed to the media at a media launch recently and includes five main events hosted by the Tobago House of Assembly: Pan in the Gayelle (October 28), J’Ouvert, Night Mas, Emerge Carnival Masquerade Gala (October 29), culminating with Parade of the Bands (October 30).

The Department of Infrastructure, Ports and Transport has noted concern expressed by some members of the public over the Marchand Main Road Rehabilitation project currently underway.
We would like to assure the public that what is currently seen is NOT the final surface. However, the periods of inclement weather over the past two weeks have delayed the commencement of the second phase.
So far, the contractor has identified and corrected the soft spots on the roadway, and the current layer of asphalt is the surface layer, meant to level out the road before the final layer is applied. This surface layer also serves the purpose of controlling dust and improve the rideability of the roadway.
The next phase, expected to commence in the coming days, will involve the application of the final layer of asphalt called the ‘wearing course’ and drain repairs along the Marchand Main Road, along with the installation of the necessary, signs, speed calming devices and road markings.

Motorists and pedestrians are urged in the interim to exercise caution when traversing the Marchand Main Road, and to adhere to Saint Lucia’s Traffic Laws.
The Department of Infrastructure regrets any inconveniences that have been caused to the public so far as a result of the roadworks and will advise on the commencement of the next phase.

The former actor and singer Jeannette McCurdy has struck gold with her first novel sharing the abuse that she endured at the hands and lips of her mother, who passed away in 2013.
American writer, director, actress, and producer, 36-year-old Lena Dunham, who is known as the creator, writer, and star of the HBO television series Girls, read and reviewed McCurdy’s novel and had this to say. She called it ‘An important cultural document’.

Adrian Dunkley runs a data analytics firm in Kingston and has recently opened a second location in the US.
Dunkley spent over a decade focused on utilising data to help several public and private entities.
But it was during the onset of the COVID-pandemic that Dunkley formally launched the business.
His company, StarApple Analytics, uses data analytics, artificial intelligence and data science to uncover actionable insights for companies, thus helping them to make the best decisions.
He described data science and AI as a field valued at trillions of dollars with untapped potential.
Dunkley also uses his data science skills for social-good initiatives and has worked with startups and non-profit organisations to leverage their internal and publicly available data.
The StarApple is eager to train others in data science, an area described by LinkedIn as a promising career field with tremendous opportunities for advancements in the future.

A man was on Monday slapped with several charges following a fight with his lover on Orange Street in downtown Kingston, which allegedly saw her being hit with a gun and robbed.
The 26-year-old office attendant, Bebeto McFarlene, otherwise called ‘Bimba’, of Charles Street, also in Kingston, was charged with assault at common law, robbery with aggravation, illegal possession of firearm and ammunition, and unlawful Wounding
Reports from the police are that McFarlene got into an argument with a woman with whom he had an intimate relationship. McFarlene reportedly used a handgun to hit the woman in her head and robbed her of $10,000 before fleeing the scene.
The complainant reported the matter to the police and McFarlene was arrested and charged.
His court date is being finalised, the police said.

The husband and son of the late Valerie Albert Fevrier have announced formal notice of a claim against a local surgeon involved in her medical treatment.
The announcement came in a statement Wednesday.

Today marks one year since the death of founding Director of Helen Television System, Valerie Albert Fevrier. Miss Albert as she was affectionately known succumbed overseas after local medical interventions here proved inadequate.

Today the husband and son of Miss Albert are honoring her memory and speaking out on efforts to hold accountable members of the medical profession.
“We wish to announce today that we have served formal notice of a claim against a local surgeon who was involved in the medical treatment of my wife. We believe that his actions- or lack thereof – resulted in her death. We believe that the standard of medical care practiced by him in her treatment fell far below the minimal acceptable standards, even for a small third world country like St. Lucia.”
Our actions will not bring her back, but in keeping with statements we made a year ago, we believe that medical professionals need be held accountable when they fall short.
We believe some of these doctors need to be re-certified and renew the Hippocratic oath. There are too many cases which go unreported and unchallenged.
If anything, we hope that this case will go a long way in holding medical professionals more accountable.
As part of the process, we are also lodging a formal complaint with the Medical Council.

En fin d’après-midi, un carambolage a impliqué cinq véhicules sur la Route des Salines. Le bilan provisoire est d’un blessé grave.
Ce mercredi (7 septembre) peu avant 17 heures, les secours ont été contactés pour un accident sur la route nationale 4 au Gosier.
Arrivés sur place, les sapeurs pompiers ont découvert un carambolage impliquant trois véhicules et un deux-roues.
Selon nos informations, le bilan provisoire serait de six personnes indemnes et un blessé grave.
Le blessé grave, le conducteur du deux-roues, un homme de 28 ans, a été transporté au Chu.
Sur place, l’incident a mobilisé la Police Nationale, des équipes de Routes de Guadeloupe, le Smur et six sapeurs pompiers.
