Primary School Debators at the mute

Approximately 37 primary school students from the six (6) public primary schools on Anguilla recently participated in a Debate Training Camp organised by the Anguilla Community College in partnership with the Department of Education. The camp was held at the Teachers’ Resource Centre over the course of Monday 22nd August through to Friday 26th August 2022, and set the stage for the hosting of the first ACC Inter-primary Schools Debating Championships, slated for October as part of College Week 2022.

Participants in attendance comprised students who were selected by their schools to represent them in the upcoming championships. They benefitted from the knowledge and expertise of a number of persons known to have either debated in the past, coached, and/or assisted with the preparation of school-related debates at national and regional levels. In this regard, a number of sessions related to the art of debating were held following a planned schedule.

The session on Monday 22nd introduced students to the concept of Debating and was conducted by Mrs. Rita Celestine-Carty. On Tuesday 23rd, students benefitted from a session entitled “Debate Structure: How a Debate is Organised”. Mr. Dwayne Adams conducted this session. Wednesday

24th saw Mrs. Mikeela Skelleie-Cunningham, Mr. Colin Johnson, and Mrs. Dayna Connor, dealt with “Debate Techniques and Presentation Skills”. On Thursday 25th facilitators guided students, in small groups, on the actual preparation for a debate including coaching and giving them tips on how to research a topic and execute it. On the final day, Friday 26th, students engaged in mock debates, applying all that they learned about debating throughout the week. They were each given immediate feedback on his/her performance by the facilitators.

The camp culminated with a soft launch of the Debating Championships and an official handing over of the sponsorship cheque by Mr. Dexter Ward, Manager of Sol Anguilla, the official sponsors of the event.

Mr Dexter Ward presents cheque toDr Michelle Queeley

Dean of Studies at the Anguilla Community College, Dr. Michelle Queeley, has hailed the recently held ACC’s Inter-primary Schools Debating Training Camp as a tremendous success. Dr. Queeley, who was at the forefront of the planning and execution of the camp, observed:

“This camp was designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions that are necessary for them to debate effectively,” she said. I was especially pleased with the large turnout of students, the enthusiasm that they displayed during the sessions, as well as the overwhelming support of parents and the wider school communities.”

Looking beyond the competition, she highlighted the long-term aims of the Debating championships as:1. fostering students’ interest in issues that affect them;2. developing students’ critical thinking, research, oral and written communication skills; and3. promoting school pride and friendly competition.

“The ACC,” Dr. Queeley said, “looks forward to a large turnout of the general public to the debates in support of the students’ efforts in October.” She is very grateful to Sol Anguilla for their kind sponsorship of US$5,000, and she looks forward to their continued partnership with the Anguilla Community College.

More information about the upcoming championships will be shared with the public in due course.

Early-morning shoot-up of DeSouza Road home leaves family of five shaken by close call with injury or death

Black Immigrant Daily News

A DeSouza Road family of five was left shaken following a shooting incident in the early hours of Monday, September 5.

A family member spoke to REAL News on the condition of anonymity, reporting that, at around 3 a.m., he heard four loud explosions that sounded like gunshots.

He says he turned to his girlfriend and said the gunshots sounded as though they were coming into the house.

The father of three says he got up and looked through a window, but did not see anyone. Not wanting to venture outside at that time, he says he waited until sunrise to inspect.

Much to his surprise, he says, when he and a neighbour went looking around the house they discovered several bullet holes.

One of the bullets damaged the styling around the door frame and was lodged there, he says, while a bath left on a table in the front yard was split by another bullet.

On the eastern side of the house, the man says, he was able to trace the path where a bullet penetrated into the living room and burst his son’s book bag – mere hours before he was to return to school.

The child was in the living room at the time and could have been seriously injured or killed, the father says – admitting that the very thought brought tears to his eyes.

Allegedly, another bullet went through a neighbour’s fence and struck the house; but that one reportedly was not retrieved.

In the meantime, the man says he is still frightened and is wondering what could have caused this incident.

He is speculating that someone was being chased and ran into his yard. He believes the attacker opened fire, thinking that the person had entered his house.

The victim further speculates that two persons were chasing the individual, and one ran into his neighbour’s yard, breaking his pipe. The other came through his property, which is fenced on all four sides, he says.

The man reports that he and his family moved into the area only three months ago, and he has not been in any confrontations since then.

He notes that he or his daughter could have been injured, given where they were sleeping, and he implores persons to think about the safety of others before discharging a weapon in a residential area.

The Police were notified and have since visited his home and conducted investigations. Three bullets were retrieved from the house and four spent shells from the road.

The Government of Saint Lucia has begun taking steps toward achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) with the aim of improving health systems and ensuring that affordable and quality health care is provided to Saint Lucians.

A committee comprising professionals within the Ministry of Health and professionals within the public sector met recently in a consultation focused on the development of a roadmap to outline the strategic direction of Universal Health Coverage in Saint Lucia.

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs Jenny Daniel says this consultation will provide the opportunity for participants to develop a “white paper” which will shape the plan for the implementation of UHC.

“The white paper basically speaks to the policy, the major overriding and overarching policy that will determine how UHC is to be implemented in St. Lucia, as in what is our starting point and where is the vision, where we would like to go, the place we would like to get to in terms of the provision of our health services and the impact it will have on Saint Lucians.” So, the white paper is basically a structured document that will outline what are our goals, objectives and vision and objectives for UHC and how exactly we expect to get there. We also touched on funding or financing of the initiatives and project and exactly where we will be and giving a proper time frame for it as well.”

Jenny Daniel also highlighted that in the coming weeks, a series of consultation will be undertaken with the private sector, non-governmental organizations NGOs and client group stakeholders.

Minister for Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs Hon. Moses Jn Baptiste spoke on his government’s commitment to improve health service coverage for the Saint Lucian population.

“We have also taken the recommendation of the ministry that we create a specific unit for the Universal Health Coverage program and we have created that unit and we are currently looking to staff that unit to ensure we have focused attention on Universal Health Coverage. We believe it is very important for the people of Saint Lucia. When we look at our disease profile and the challenges that we have in health care and also when we look at the cost of health care, we know that the people of Saint Lucia require that kind of assistance.”

Cabinet has approved the first phase of the implementation of Universal Health Coverage which will commence with the Performance Based Financing component.

Sep 6: Hurricane Kay could slam parts of Baja California peninsula Loop Cayman Islands

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Cayman Compass

Reports from the National Hurricane Center this Tuesday morning indicate that Hurricane Kay’s maximum sustained winds remain in the region of 80 to 85 mph.

If Kay continues on a northwest track and intensifies, then the Baja California peninsula could get a near or direct hit between Wednesday night and Friday morning.

Hurricane Key projected track (Source: The Weather Channel)

Portions of the Mexican coast are also at risk, with residents being asked by the National Meteorological Service to take “extreme precautions” due to the projection of heavy rains. If the forecast proves true, this may lead to an increase in the levels of rivers and streams and cause issues in low flood zones.

Rainfall predictions (source: The Weather Channel)

As a result of the foregoing concerns, the National Hurricane Center said that the government of Mexico has now issued a Tropical Storm Warning along the east coast of the Baja California peninsula (south of San Evaristo) and along the west coast of the Baja California peninsula (south of Cabo San Lazaro).

A Tropical Storm Watch is also in effect for areas north of San Evaristo, northward to Loreto and north of Cabo San Lazaro, northward to Punta Abreojos.

Residents in these areas should remain vigilant as flash flooding, landslides and large swells are forecasted across portions of southwestern Mexico, including the Baja California peninsula. These swells will likely cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

6 Sept: 60 % chance of tropical depression near Cabo Verde Islands Loop Cayman Islands

The current frenzy of storms, including Tropical Storm Earl (heading in Bermuda’s direction, possibly as a hurricane), Hurricane Danielle (to pass near the Azores) and Hurricane Kay (a threat to the Baja California peninsula) might be distracting everyone from a new development lurking near Cabo Verde Islands.

The system, according to the National Hurricane Center, is moving 15 to 20 mph and is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms, stretching from the Cabo Verde Islands southwestward.

This could develop into a tropical depression in a few days as it moves westward to west-northwestward over the eastern and central tropical Atlantic.

The chance of formation over the next five days is medium, at 60 per cent.

Notwithstanding that there is only a medium chance of formation, residents in the Caribbean should remain vigilant and monitor this development as it appears to be following closely behind Earl.

Barita Investments Limited has inked a deal with an entity owned by businessman Karl Hendrickson, which has resulted in Barita being the new owner of 101.4 acres of land in St Ann which is part of Windsor Estate.

The land has a major beachfront and is situated in the vicinity of the Marina Bay development.

The land was purchased from National Continental Corporation Limited for approximately US $60M, which is over J$9 billion.

Paul Simpson — founder of the Cornerstone Group that owns Barita — was reportedly integral to inking the deal.

The 39-year-old Simpson, who has fast developed a reputation in local and regional corporate circles as an investment banker and funder raiser extraordinaire, is also the Deputy Chairman of Barita.

Simpson and senior executives at Barita were mum this week when contacted about the entity’s latest land acquisition. However, reports indicate that the land bought from National Continental Corporation Limited will be used for the development of high-end villas, resort homes and luxury residential complexes.

Last year, Barita bought the 250-acre Reggae Beach property in St Mary from business mogul Michael Lee-Chin.

In recent months, Barita also purchased the three-acre Ruins property in St Ann.

The Reggae Beach property is expected to see major developments in the coming months as Barita has entered into a public/private sector arrangement for the construction and rollout of a multipurpose essential services development project.
