Tobago tourism sector workers have a role to play in the island’s development, THA Secretary of Tourism, Culture, Antiquities and Transportation Tashia Burris said on Wednesday.
“We must build the island together,” Burris told over 100 tourism sector workers in a town hall meeting at the Scarborough Library. During the meeting, there were calls for greater efficiency in customer service delivery, additional craft market spaces at the island’s ports of entry, the inclusion of a tourism-based curriculum at the primary school level, greater recognition, accessibility, and incorporation of music education in tourism; more youth-based tourism opportunities; Store Bay Beach Facility upgrades; and further developments in agro-tourism.
In responding to the issue on customer service, CEO of the Tobago Tourism Agency (TTAL) Louis Lewis said training will be conducted to improve service across several sectors.
Burris said there plans were to extend the division’s Summer Youth Awareness Programme and the Tourism Youth Clubs initiative.
She said discussions were underway with the Division of Education, Research, and Technology to formalise tourism education.
She assured the workers and industry representatives that their concerns and proposed solutions were considered and, as such, all efforts would be made for a timely policy.
Delving into some of the significant development upgrades to come, she said, “Work towards the betterment of the island. We must rebuild the island together. We must be our island’s biggest cheerleaders. It’s up to every single one of us as we work towards becoming the greatest little island on the planet.”

Tobago now has 113 active covid19 cases after seven new cases were confirmed overnight Friday.
The island’s covid19 death toll remains at 272.
In a statement on Saturday, the THA Division of Health, Wellness and Social Protection reported six people are currently hospitalised, four of whom are fully vaccinated and two unvaccinated.
The division said, to date, Tobago has 9,716 recovered patients.

Car set on fire in Eccles; police called in after owner refuses to cooperate with GFS

The Guyana Police Force has been called to look into the circumstances surrounding a motor car being set on fire in Eccles, East Bank Demerara after the owner refused to cooperate with investigators from the Guyana Fire Service.
According to the GFS, a call was received at about 20:17h on Friday evening to report a fire at Lot 162 Hibiscus Avenue, AA Eccles.
Water Tender #113 from the Eccles Fire Station immediately responded to the location. Upon arrival, firefighters observed a vehicle on fire and quickly sprung into action to extinguish the blaze.
One line working from WT#113 tank supply was used to extinguish the fire but the vehicle and its contents were destroyed.
“It is suspected that the fire may have been the result of a malicious act.”
“However, when questioned the presumed owner/driver was uncooperative and refused to provide firefighters with information regarding the vehicle and the fire, highlighting that they had not called the fire station nor made the report,” the Fire Service said in a statement.
As such, the matter was referred to the police for further investigation.
Nevertheless, the Guyana Fire Service is reminding that it is mandated to respond to all fire reports and is therefore appealing to citizens to cooperate with our ranks in providing the required information.
“All fires MUST be reported to the GFS, which is the sole agency with the responsibility for preventing and extinguishing fires within the country,” the agency reiterated.

3 more die from COVID; 142 new cases detected

Three more persons who tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have died, according to the Health Ministry today.
These latest fatalities are: a 55-year-old male from Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), who died on July 7; a 70-year-old male from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), who died on July 8, and a 79-year-old male from Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), who also died on July 8.
Consequently, this takes the total number of deaths from the pandemic in Guyana to 1,262.
Meanwhile, another 142 persons have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 24-hours.
Active cases in the country are now at 770 including four patients in the COVID-19 ICU and the remaining persons in either home (731) or institutional (35) isolation.
There are also two other persons in institutional quarantine.
So far, some 66,130 persons have recovered from the life-threatening virus in Guyana.

In honour of Caribbean American Heritage Month (celebrated annually in the month of June), the television network VH1 invited Love & Hip Hop Atlanta stars Spice and Karlie Redd for a culture clash of sorts.
The two women – both residents of Atlanta, Spice, Jamaican-born, and Karlie Redd, born of Trinidadian heritage – talked everything about food, fashion, trends started in the tropics and more.
At the seven-minute mark, they played a guessing game featuring popular meals from Guyana, Haiti, Trinidad & Tobago, St Lucia, and Jamaica.

The patient who is Jamaica’s first confirmed case of monkeypox has absconded the health facility where he had been put into isolation pending his recovery.
Reports are that after noon today, the patient – who presented to the public health system on July 5, having arrived in Jamaica some five days earlier from the United Kingdom – left through a bathroom window of the facility and had a car waiting. The police have been called in and are investigating.
Anyone with information about his whereabouts are asked to contact the police immediately.
“Monkeypox is a viral disease that can be transmitted from person to person. It is therefore important that anyone with knowledge of the patient’s whereabouts contact the police so that he can be returned to isolation, pending the resolution of his illness,” said Minister of Health & Wellness, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton.
Symptoms of Monkeypox include fever, intense headache, swelling of the lymph nodes, back pain, muscle ache, lack of energy, and/or rash. Person-to-person spread occurs through:
direct contact with monkeypox skin lesions or scabs;contact with clothing or linens (such as bedding or towels) used by an infected person; andcoughing or sneezing of an individual with a Monkeypox rash.
The virus enters the body through broken skin (even if not visible), the respiratory tract, or the mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth). The incubation period is between 5 and 21 days.
Members of the public who experience fever, intense headache, muscle aches and/or rash on the skin, must immediately isolate and call ahead to their health centre or doctor before visiting. All members of the public should wear a mask, frequently wash hands and practice physical distancing, as part of infection prevention and control efforts.
