CABINET NOTES:

The Cabinet invited three officials from the Administrative office of LIAT to speak of its future role and expansion. CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHATSAPP GROUP FOR NEWS UPDATES.

Two officials were present while the third administrator joined virtually.

In the proposed new LIAT, the salaries, wages and other emoluments will take up a smaller part of its cost of operations. Currently three aircraft are being utilized, as opposed to 10 aircraft before the collapse of LIAT.

The schedule plan for the new LIAT is intended to reflect the commercial needs and fulfillment of the territories; any destination requiring more flights than has been deemed necessary, would make a special payment to realize its ambition.

A minimum revenue guarantee (MRG) would be applied in order to determine what that cost would be.

Every territory to which LIAT flies will be asked to purchase shares, so that the burdens and the benefits can be equitably shared.

The revenue earned by LIAT over these past twenty (20) months shows a small operating profit. CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHATSAPP GROUP FOR NEWS UPDATES.

With a growing number of sexual offences making their way through the courts, it is imperative that a sex offender registry be established as a tool for public safety.

And as promised last year, residents will soon know when a sex offender moves into their neighbourhood.

“We are hoping to take that to parliament some time before or during the month of July,” Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Steadroy Benjamin told Observer.

The number of sexual predators is increasing day by day, especially those who prey on children.

This has caused a massive upset in the public domain but residents are not the only ones concerned.

“We are very concerned with increased matters of sexual offences involving minor children, both male and female, and we are going to look at it seriously and take appropriate actions to address these disturbing developments in our society.

“This is a trend noted not only in Antigua and Barbuda but around the Caribbean in general. We are going to look at it to stamp it out as best as we can,” Benjamin stated.

He also shared that a system has been set up within the country to have sexual offense matters dealt with in quick time.

“The whole purpose of our model Sexual Offenses Court is to do exactly what’s happening at the moment; that all complaints in sexual matters are being dealt with expeditiously. In fact, what we are hoping is that all sexual offenses are dealt within the period 18 months,” he explained.

Benjamin also noted the public’s uneasiness where the matter of sentencing is concerned. However, the Public Safety Minister iterated those penalties are given based on sentencing guidelines used across the OECS region.

Furthermore, he said: Sentencing really is a matter for the judge. The judge hears all the facts, he or she [evaluates] the circumstances and then passes what in the court’s opinion is an appropriate sentence.

“If in fact a sentence is passed and Director of Public Prosecution is not pleased, he can always appeal against the sentencing through the Court of Appeal.”

Meanwhile, Benjamin disclosed that additional forms of rehabilitation for sex offenders are being sought after.

“We notice that most of these offenses are committed by persons known to the family…we have to look at the psychological aspect of this matter as well and I am working very closely with the Ministry of Social Transformation to develop policies, professional advice to look at the minds of these individuals who get involved in these outrageous matters,” he concluded.

One of the most disturbing sexual matters the public is aware of is that where an 18-year-old raped his five-year-old niece.

The now 21-year-old is awaiting sentencing in the High Court for the crime which he admitted to.

His sentence will be handed down later this month.

El primer ministro británico acepta renunciar a su cargo

Black Immigrant Daily News

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Radio Isla TV

Mighty Gabby defends bashment soca genre for juniors too | Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

Barbados Cultural Ambassador His Excellency Dr The Most Honoroble Anthony ‘The Mighty Gabby’ Carter is expressing his disapproval with the decision to remove bashment soca as a genre in the upcoming Scotiabank Junior Monarch Competition.

“I don’t understand the big fuss some people are making about it because it caused NCF to drop it. I didn’t think that that was the right thing to do but in time we will see.”

Speaking to LoopNews during a lunchtime concert held at the Frank Collymore Hall on Wednesday, the cultural ambassador contended that although he agreed with the move to separate soca from calypso, he still believed that bashment soca could have been included and encouraged as a separate genre.

He argued that since persons are able accept other genres, namely dancehall and rap they should be able to accept bashment soca.

“I am glad that they divided the soca from the calypso but I’m sorry the bashment was dropped. They should never drop the bashment because a name is just a name but the music is the most important thing, the beat, that riddim, because if you can accept dancehall and rap, you should be able to accept bashment.”

Describing bashment soca as faster-paced reggae, Carter explained that many persons were speaking ill about the genre simply because of its name.

“Don’t care who saying no, I saying yes, because I know that it is just music. But some people say the name say this and that. I don’t care about no name, I care about the music, I care about that beat, I care about that difference. What bashment really is is speed up reggae but they don’t understand it because they are not musically inclined in that way.”

He also added:

“I don’t understand the big fuss some people are making about it because it caused NCF to drop it. I didn’t think that that was the right thing to do, but in time we will see.”

The lone bashment soca entry to the Junior Monarch competition is now being judges under the soca category.

Embattled UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson agrees to resign | Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson agreed to resign Thursday after days of defections crippled the controversial leader and left him unable to govern.

Johnson finally agreed to step down after one of his closest allies, Treasury Chief Nadhim Zahawi, told the prime minister to resign for the good of the country. It was not immediately clear whether Johnson will stay in office while the Conservative Party chooses a new leader, who will automatically become prime minister as well. A formal announcement is expected later Thursday.

“Prime Minister: this is not sustainable and it will only get worse: for you, for the Conservative Party and most importantly of all the country,” Zahawi said in a letter to Johnson. “You must do the right thing and go now.”

Zahawi’s intervention came after two more members of Johnson’s Cabinet resigned, along with three junior officials, pushing the number of those who have left the government this week past 50.

Johnson on Wednesday rejected calls to resign, arguing that he had a mandate from the voters to remain in office. But by Thursday morning the man who has built a reputation for wriggling out of political controversies was forced to admit the reality of his situation.

Bernard Jenkin, a senior Conservative Party lawmaker, said he met with Johnson on Wednesday and advised him to stand down.

“I just said to him, ‘Look, it’s just when you go now, and it’s how you go. You can go with some dignity or you can be forced out like Donald Trump, clinging to power and pretending he’s won the election when he’s lost,” Jenkin told the BBC before Johnson agreed to resign.

Johnson, 58, managed to remain in power for almost three years, despite allegations that he was too close to party donors, that he protected supporters from bullying and corruption allegations, and that he misled Parliament and was dishonest to the public about government office parties that broke pandemic lockdown rules.

But recent disclosures that Johnson knew about sexual misconduct allegations against Chris Pincher, a Conservative lawmaker before he promoted Pincher to a senior position turned out to be the last straw.

Last week, Pincher resigned as deputy chief whip after complaints he groped two men at a private club. That triggered a series of reports about past allegations levelled against Pincher — and shifting explanations from the government about what Johnson knew when he tapped him for a senior job enforcing party discipline.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid and Treasury chief Rishi Sunak resigned within minutes of each other Wednesday over the scandal. The two Cabinet heavyweights were responsible for tackling two of the biggest issues facing Britain — the cost-of-living crisis and COVID-19.

Javid captured the mood of many lawmakers when he said Johnson’s actions threatened to undermine the integrity of the Conservative Party and the British government.

“At some point, we have to conclude that enough is enough,” he told fellow lawmakers Wednesday. “I believe that point is now.”

Welsh Secretary Simon Hart resigned on Wednesday, and Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis followed suit early Thursday, telling Johnson in his resignation letter that “we are … past the point of no return. I cannot sacrifice my personal integrity to defend things as they stand now.” He was later followed by Education Secretary Michelle Donelan, who was only appointed to her post on Tuesday to replace Zahawi.

Johnson had attempted to defy the mathematics of parliamentary government and the traditions of British politics. It is rare for a prime minister to cling to power in the face of this much pressure from his Cabinet colleagues.

The closest parallel may be Margaret Thatcher, the long-time Conservative prime minister who in 1990 sought to remain in office after her authority was undermined by disagreements over Britain’s relationship with what is now known as the European Union. But even she decided to resign after a number of Cabinet ministers told her it would be better for the party if she stepped aside.

Johnson may try to remain in office until the Conservative Party chooses a new leader, a process likely to take place over the summer. But some Conservatives said he should leave 10 Downing St. immediately to end the chaos engulfing the government.

George Freeman, who quit as science minister on Thursday, tweeted that “Boris Johnson needs to hand in the seals of office, apologise to Her Majesty (Queen Elizabeth II) and advise her to call for a caretaker prime minister. To take over today so that ministers can get back to work and we can choose a new Conservative leader to try and repair the damage and rebuild trust.”
