OBSERVER: One of the country’s top healthcare professionals was named Nurse of the Year.

President of the Antigua and Barbuda Nurses Association (ABNA) Soria Dupie-Winston won the prestigious award from among representatives from several other Caribbean islands to include Anguilla, Jamaica, and Barbados at the 32nd Biennial Caribbean Nurses Conference held in Jamaica.

Dupie-Winston, who was among a 12-member delegation the represented the twin island state during the conference last weekend, expressed her delight in receiving recognition for her hard work and dedication throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It’s a humbling experience. In everything that I do, especially as it relates to my work, I try to do my best and represent Christ. It’s a good feeling,” she told Observer following the ceremony.

The conference hosted various educational activities during the day while other activities, including a ball and gala under the theme ‘A Bridgerton Affair’, was held in the night. Dupie-Winston was also crowned Queen since her dress best depicted the true essence of the Netflix hit series.

Meanwhile, Dupie-Winston said nurses within the Caribbean from as far south as French Guiana right up to Bermuda and The Bahamas are facing similar challenges especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The Caribbean-American Nurses Association, they too, realised when we met that we all faced similar challenges during and after Covid, and we decided to support each other going forward as an association,” she added.

The ABNA President has been lobbying for the management of the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) to address nurses’ concerns, which include inadequate risk and uniform allowance, along with a lack of benefits for further education, and pensions.

THE CHRONIC batting woes of the West Indies, at the T20 International level, continued on Monday when they were embarrassed by Scotland in their ICC T20 World Cup First Round Group B contest.

In the first-ever meeting between the teams in a T20 International, Scotland registered a 42-run victory at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart, Australia.

Group B also features Ireland and Zimbabwe, and the West Indies, who have endured a horrid run of form in T20 Internationals this year, must defeat both (this week) in order to keep alive their hopes of booking a spot in the Super 12 stage.

Scotland, who were put in to bat by West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran, posted a score of 160 runs for five wickets with opening batsman, and Man of the Match, George Munsey, hitting an unbeaten 66 (53 balls, nine fours). Calum MacLeod contributed 23 and Michael Jones 20.

In their reply, the West Indies crashed from 53/1, in the sixth over, to 118 off 18.3 overs.

Holder, who was the last batsman to be dismissed, topscored with 38 (33 balls, four fours and a six), while the first three in the line-up, Kyle Mayers, Evin Lewis and Brandon King, made 20, 14 and 17 respectively. Pooran and vice-captain Rovman Powell, each made five.

Mark Watt took 3/12 for the Scots, while Michael Leask had 2/15 and Brad Wheal 2/32.

Global Poverty: UN Chief Says The World Is Moving Backwards – St. Lucia Times News

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed concern over global poverty in a message to mark October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

“We face a harsh truth: the world is moving backwards,” Guterres declared.

In this regard, he observed that COVID-19 had plunged millions into poverty, setting back more than four years of hard-won progress.

According to the UN Chief, inequalities are widening.

He also asserted that job losses, skyrocketing food and energy prices, and the gathering shadows of a global recession are battering national and household economies.

At the same time, Guterres observed that the climate crisis and raging conflicts are causing immense suffering, with the poorest people bearing the brunt.

“Developing countries are being squeezed dry, denied access to resources and debt relief to invest in recovery and growth. The Sustainable Development Goals are being pushed far out of reach,” he lamented.

The UN official stated that the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is a wake-up call to the world.

“This year’s theme — “Dignity for all in practice” — must be a rallying cry for urgent global action,” he noted.

“Action to invest in people-centred solutions — from health and decent work, to gender equality, social protection, and transformed food and education systems. Action to transform a morally bankrupt global financial system and ensure access tofinancing and debt relief for all countries,” he explained.

In addition, Guterres urged action to support developing countries as they transition from planet-killing fossil fuels to renewable energy and job-creating green economies and action to end conflicts, heal geopolitical divisions and pursue peace.

He also called for action to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.

“On this important day, let us renew our commitment to a better world for all. Let us consign poverty to the pages of history,” Guterres advised.

VIDEO: Relatives respond to young cop’s killing in St Andrew Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The Police High Command has condemned the brutal murder of a police constable on Ricketts Avenue in St Andrew on Saturday, October 15.

Four other persons were shot and injured in the incident, including a 10-year-old, the police have reported.

The deceased policeman has been identified as 22-year-old Constable Brian Martin, who is from Ricketts Avenue, and was assigned to the Half-Way Tree Police Station.

While the high command mourned the loss of a colleague, elder relatives of the constable reflected on his focus as a youth that led to him joining the constabulary, which are captured in video below.

Reports are that about 10pm, Constable Martin was among a group of persons at a wake in the community when armed men approached the group and opened gunfire.

Law enforcers were summoned and Constable Martin and four other persons were taken to hospital, where Constable Martin died while being treated, and the other persons were admitted in stable conditions.

The Police High Command expressed condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the slain constable, stating the constabulary is mourning the loss of a colleague.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said it is committed to conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the murder.

“The police will not be deterred by this latest attack. They will continue their focus on ridding communities of guns, gunmen and gangs who continue to cause death, pain and mayhem,” the high command said.

“Furthermore, we will be relentless in our pursuit in bringing those criminals to justice”, it added.

Anyone with information that may assist with the investigation into the constable’s killing is being encouraged to contact Crime Stop at 311 or the police 119 emergency number.

The JCF said its Chaplaincy Branch and Welfare Department are providing support to the family members, friends and colleagues of Martin.
