The final weekend was blessed with magnificent racing, superb shoreside entertainment and outstanding prizes from Land Union , The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority and various Antigua Sailing Week sponsors.

With sunny breezy conditions in the Solent, the 70 boats in 7 classes were competing, not just to win the Land Union September regatta, but to win the coveted Grand prize – the opportunity to fly to Antigua and race at Antigua Sailing Week 2023 in bareboat comfort on a Dream Yacht Charter.

“I have been to Antigua many times but never competed at Antigua Sailing Week,” commented a delighted Ian Atkins. “The only problem is that we can’t fit all of the Dark ‘N’ Stormy crew on one Dream Yacht Charter boat, but I am sure we can remedy that! This has got to be one of the best prizes at any UK regatta this season. A big thank you to Antigua Sailing Week and of course the Royal Southern which has produced a top class Summer Series.”

Louise Makin racing with Chris Jones on their J/111 JourneyMaker II received the distinction of best female skipper after winning their class and received a luxury timepiece from Locman Italy

We appreciate their support not just during Antigua Sailing Week, but the confidence to take the promotion on the road and continue to promote Antigua and Barbuda as the Yachting Capital of the Caribbean.”

PM Browne claims that July 2021 and February 2022 bonds are same bond that was cancelled

Black Immigrant Daily News

Prime Minister ofAntigua & Barbuda Gaston Browne

REAL NEWS: Prime Minister Gaston is seeking to shed light on the $540 million bond “secretly” taken out by his Administration over a year ago, implying that it is the same bond that was circulated on the international capital market in February this year and subsequently cancelled.

About three weeks ago, it was revealed that, on July 31, 2021, the Browne Administration clandestinely floated a 10-year bond for US$200 million, at a 4 percent interest rate, which was taken up by a company called Resilience Partners Incorporated.

This information was contained on page 102 of the 2022 Budget Estimates.

However, today, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Barbuda, Trevor Walker, sought to get some clarity on the bonds: whether there were two separate borrowings and whether the Government had received the funds from the 2021 bond.

PM Browne, who is the Minister of Finance, reiterated that the bond had been cancelled, appearing to suggest that the bonds were one and the same.

Asked to explain why the bond is listed in the 2022 Budget Estimates under the debt stock for 2021, PM Browne gave what has been described by one resident as “an interesting and peculiar explanation.”

He claimed that an appropriate heading had to be created in the event the Government had received those funds.

Browne had said the proceeds from the bond would be used to implement projects that would stimulate the economy and would secure growth of 8 per cent this year (2022).

Two of these projects were the acquisition and renovation of the Jolly Beach Hotel and the construction of a resort at Morris Bay.

The Political Leader of the United Progressive Party, Harold Lovell, noted earlier that $540 million is 50 percent of the national budget and a significant part of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and could have been used to boost the country’s economy.

An alleged gang member linked to the murder of one man and injury of another during an attack at a house in Westmoreland in May of this year has been arrested.

The Westmoreland police say the alleged perpetrator, 20-year-old Vashean Braham, otherwise called ‘Tugrat’, of Shrewsbury, Whithorn in Westmoreland was held during an operation in the Darliston section of the parish on Tuesday.

Allegations are that Braham was part of a group of armed men who went to the house to carry out the attack. Reports are that at about 12:15 am, Braham and several armed men gained entry into the home of the victims and opened gunfire, hitting two of the occupants.

The police were alerted and upon their arrival, both victims were taken to the hospital, where O’Neil Rodney was pronounced dead.

The police said Braham was later held during an operation on Tuesday and has since been charged with murder, wounding with intent, and illegal possession of a firearm in connection with the incident that took place at Roaring River on Thursday, May 26.

Police said a court date for Braham is being finalised.
