New WHO Report Says 3.5 Billion People Suffer From Oral Diseases – St. Lucia Times News

The Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) has noted the global neglect of oral health, as the world body published a new report on Friday.

The report revealed that some 3.5 billion people suffer from oral diseases – with three out of four living in low and middle-income countries.

“Oral health has long been neglected in global health, but many oral diseases can be prevented and treated with the cost-effective measures outlined in this report,” said WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The WHO notes that opportunities for improved global oral health include adopting a public health approach by addressing common risk factors.

These involve promoting a well-balanced diet low in sugars, stopping tobacco use, reducing alcohol consumption, and improving access to fluoride toothpaste.

Other solutions outlined in the report support making oral health part of national health services; redefining oral health workforces to respond to population needs; expanding oral health service coverage; and collecting and integrating oral health data into national health monitoring systems.

“WHO is committed to providing guidance and support to countries so that all people, wherever they live and whatever their income, have the knowledge and tools needed to look after their teeth and mouths, and to access services for prevention and care when they need them,” the WHO Director assured.

The Global Oral Health Status Report analysed key areas and markers throughout 194 countries in a first-ever comprehensive overview.

It shows that cases have increased by one billion over the last 30 years.

WHO said the main reason is many people do not have access to prevention and treatment.

According to the organisation, the most common oral diseases stem from dental cavities, gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancers.

On the other hand, tooth decay is the single most common condition worldwide, affecting an estimated 2.5 billion people.

The WHO report highlighted unequal access to oral health services, with vulnerable and disadvantaged populations most affected.

People on low incomes and with disabilities; older individuals living alone or in care facilities; those in remote and rural communities; and people from minority groups carry a higher burden of oral diseases, according to WHO.

European teams abandon plan to wear armbands at World Cup Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

FIFA’s threat of on-field punishment for players forced World Cup teams to back down Monday and abandon an anti-discrimination campaign aimed at host nation Qatar.

The captains of seven European nations won’t wear armbands supporting the “One Love” campaign in games after FIFA said the players would be shown yellow cards. The decision came three days after beer sales at stadiums was suddenly banned under pressure from the Qatari government and two days after FIFA President Gianni Infantino delivered an extraordinary tirade defending the host nation’s human rights record.

“As national federations we can’t put our players in a position where they could face sporting sanctions, including bookings,” the seven soccer federations said in a joint statement.

The climbdown after threats from FIFA came hours before England’s Harry Kane, the Netherlands’ Virgil van Dijk and Wales’ Gareth Bale were due to wear the armbands in Monday’s games. The captains of Belgium, Switzerland, Germany and Denmark had also pledged to wear the armbands in the coming days.

“Our number one priority at the World Cup is to win the games,” the Dutch soccer federation said in a separate statement. “Then you don’t want the captain to start the match with a yellow card.”

Monday’s decision shows the political situation surrounding the first World Cup in the Middle East — even after Infantino asked all 32 national teams to keep politics off the soccer field.

Since being awarded the World Cup hosting rights in 2010, Qatar has faced years of criticism regarding its treatment of low-paid migrant workers as well as it’s criminalisation of gay and lesbian sex.

FIFA raised the prospect of yellow cards on Sunday during a testy meeting with European soccer federations, including the seven teams that pledged to wear the armband.

The One Love campaign was started in the Netherlands and its symbol is a heart-shaped multi-colored logo aimed at promoting inclusion and diversity in soccer and society.

However, the European plans were in clear breach of World Cup regulations and FIFA’s general rules on team equipment at its games.

“For FIFA final competitions, the captain of each team must wear the captain’s armband provided by FIFA,” the soccer body’s equipment regulations state.

The armband dispute flared two months ago when 10 European teams said they had joined the longer-standing campaign in Dutch soccer, but it was still not resolved when the seven teams arrived in Qatar.

FIFA offered its own compromise Monday by saying captains of all 32 teams “will have the opportunity” to wear an armband with the slogan “No Discrimination” in the group games.

FIFA’s original offer Saturday was that “NoDiscrimination” — the only one of its chosen slogan aligned with the European teams’ wish — would appear only at the quarterfinal stage.___By GRAHAM DUNBAR

JCF kicks of Police Week to mark 155 years Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

As the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) observes its 155th anniversary this November, it is recognising the strides made as it continues to transform to serve the people of Jamaica.

From the rollout of an electronic station records management system in police stations to achieving ISO 9001:2015 certification at Duhaney Park and Matilda’s Corner stations, the JCF said it is on a revolutionary path.

In a release from its Corporate Communications Unit, the constabulary said central to its journey are its members, whose daily sacrifices demonstrate that they – as the theme for Police Week 2022 declares – are “relentless in their pursuit of excellence”.

This week, as the JCF continues its work to keep the people of Jamaica safe–which includes ongoing operations and activities under the state of public emergency–the JCF moves to salute its members and invite all Jamaicans to show their appreciation for their local police by supporting the events of the week.

People can visit their local police stations on Monday, November 21 for Open Day, where the veils will be drawn back and individuals can get a feel for the day-to-day activities of the police, the JCF said.

On Tuesday, November 22, the JCF will reach out to its extended family as the children of policemen and women who have died since November last year are honoured in a special luncheon at Jamaica Pegasus in New Kingston, St Andrew.

The week continues with a stakeholder’s consultation at the Office of the Commissioner of Police on Old Hope Road in St Andrew at 2pm on Wednesday, November 23.

Then, on Thursday, November 24, will be the Long Service and Good Conduct Award Ceremony, which is scheduled for 3pm at the Police Officer’s Club in St Andrew. More than 100 policemen and women from the ranks of Constable to Inspector will be honoured for their contribution to Jamaica.

The JCF said the week would culminate with another celebration of outstanding police service on Friday, November 25, when the Police Civilian Oversight Authority will recognise and reward the best-performing police stations in police area three. The ‘TOPS’ (Transforming Our Police Service) competition runs annually in one of the police geographic areas, JCF said, adding that it seeks to act as a catalyst for the maintenance of JCF service standards and documented procedures.

The top performers will be announced in a ceremony at the Golf View Hotel in Mandeville at 10am.

Miss Antigua & Barbuda Claims Plus Sized Beauty Pageant is a Scam

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

A woman, who was excited to represent plus-size women in a pageant earlier this month, now wishes that she never entered.

Eugeney Bailey, a woman of Antiguan parentage had plans to win the Miss Plus Size Universe International pageant 2022, which was to take place on November 5 in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

But even after being postponed twice, the show did not go on.

However, that appears to be the least of Bailey’s complaints as she is now claiming that she and all of the other five delegates were ill-treated, deceived and scammed.

Bailey told Loop that all of the girls had to pay a registration fee of US $1,000 to cover accommodation, food, hair, make-up and transportation and still had to find their way to St Vincent and source sponsors for everything else they needed.

She believes that the money would have been enough “if you put the money to where you said it was going to go to” but according to her, that wasn’t the case.

Bailey was upset with herself for not taking heed to initial red flags such as being given “a bogus hotel name that was not even in St Vincent,” when she inquired about where she and the other contestants would be housed.

According to her, she and the other girls stayed in an apartment where they were not only separated from each other but some persons had nicer rooms than others.

She said that the food they got was “not appropriate.” In fact, she said the girls “were not eating properly” having been given small meals and being left hungry for hours.

In addition, Bailey claims that the pageant’s organiser Pearl Williams treated them like children when they refused to eat fast food and requested to be taken to a grocery store.

Furthermore, the 49-year-old is alleging that the pageant was biased before it even started saying “some girls got special treatment and some girls were told they won certain segments.”

But that’s not all; Bailey believes that the pageant did not have to be postponed since most of the girls wanted the show to go on.

She said they were given varying excuses such as the weather and “no prize money.”

Bailey, therefore, believes that she and the other girls should be reimbursed.

Meanwhile, a former contestant in the pageant is saying that her experience mirrors that of Bailey.

Renee Edwards-Ambrose, the first Antiguan to enter the contest in 2013 says she too found that the organizer was “sketchy” and therefore did not pay the registration fee.

However, she said she was so excited about entering that she ignored the signs.

She stated that not only was the pageant biased that year but when she conducted investigations, she learned that many of the things they were told were lies.

She said even to this day, the winner of the pageant from her year has not received her prize money.

Williams refused to comment on the matter but at least some of the girls have indicated that the experience was not good enough to speak about.

Loop News reached out to the pageant for a comment on the allegations but they did not respond to our request.
