Opposition says gov’t mired in confusion and ineffective Loop Cayman Islands

Opposition Leader Roy McTaggart has slammed the government as being confused and incapable of effective action as he shed further light on the filing of a motion of ‘Lack of Confidence in the Government’ in Parliament on Wednesday.

“We have, in the Cayman Islands today, a government beset by controversies of its own making; mired in confusion and internal division, and incapable of effective action,” explained McTaggart.

“Our islands are facing significant challenges, and we cannot afford a government asleep at the wheel. There are those in government whom we believe wish to see the country progress and are very capable if given the opportunity and the right environment,” said McTaggart, who noted that the motion was seconded by Deputy Opposition Leader Joseph Hew.

McTaggart said that “several of them have spoken to us about their frustrations with the current leadership, or lack of leadership, and the general unease in their Caucus”.

The opposition leader said he is urging those who have expressed their frustration to join the Opposition and vote in favour of the motion when it comes to Parliament.

He said that by voting in the affirmative, they will be voting for a “fresh start” and will have “taken a patriotic step” in helping rescue “our Islands from a state of malaise”.

According to McTaggart, the Opposition had from the outset, “tried to be constructive” and to “offer our ideas to a government that lacked experience and had no coherent programme”.

He added: “I offered to work with the premier on the national COVID response and the re-opening of our economy. I gave him a range of suggestions to help families facing the cost-of-living crisis. I warned the Finance Minister during the budget session that his budget plans ignored the looming dark clouds of increasing inflation.

“He ignored those warnings, and the country is suffering because of it. We have also brought motions to Parliament seeking to drive forward action that will benefit our people. These have been ignored or, at best, taken up grudgingly and after needless delay. But ultimately, with no real action.”

Related Article

McTaggart said that the business of effective government is proving impossible due to what he described as a lack of leadership from the current premier and the apparent divisions within the Cabinet and Government Caucus, while the cost-of-living crisis is escalating.

“Families face considerable hardship while many local businesses grapple with rocketing costs and a squeeze on profits. The government forecasts that Cayman’s economy will still not have recovered to its pre-pandemic level by the end of this year, 20 months after the PACT government took office. It is clear where the accountability for failure needs to lie,” McTaggart noted.

For his part, Hew said these “failures to deliver results” for Caymanian are further compounded by ineffective governance.

Related Article

Hew said: “We have seen ministers breaking the Code of Conduct that they themselves devised. We have seen ministers making policy announcements that they have to walk back due to a lack of support from their colleagues and the public.

“In recent days, we have seen the divisions in the PACT government revealed again, with both the premier and a minister claiming credit for supposedly getting Speaker Bush to agree to step down as Speaker; and with the premier publicly reprimanding his minister for not showing restraint.”

Dr McKeeva Bush walked away from the post following a widely publicised incident at an official function recently. The matter was being probed by the police.

Related Article

Hew added: “Members of the public are also concerned about the lack of implementation of many common-sense measures suggested by the Opposition to address the cost-of-living crisis affecting families. The Premier and his Government have done little to assist our people. And then only after being prodded by the Opposition to act.”

Hew also lamented the lack of sittings of Parliament to tackle the various problems being confronted by the country and consequently any remedies while noting that the country deserves better.

McTaggart took up that theme: “Yes, the country deserves better, and we need an alternative government that is ready to step in and take the action our country needs.

Our people need action from the government to support them through the challenges ahead. The country needs action that only an experienced Progressives-led government can deliver.

“We hope responsible members of the government will be persuaded by the debate that we will put to Parliament and that they will support our motion of no confidence. The Progressives, along with a coalition of the capable, can then look to form a government to take the country forward over the two and a half years that remain before the next general election.

“Given the challenges facing the country, new experienced leadership offers the best route to putting in place the government and the programme of action that the Cayman Islands need.

“Cayman is crying out for strong, capable leadership. Our people need action from the government to support them through the challenges ahead. The country needs action that only an experienced Progressives-led government can deliver.”

In closing, Mr McTaggart said, the convention in the Westminster system of government demands that a motion on a lack of confidence in the government is a matter, which ought to be dealt with expeditiously.

He said such a motion places the government in an untenable position and a position of uncertainty.

“So, we expect this motion to be dealt with when the Parliament next meets on October 5th, 2022,” he said.

The Meteorological Service on Wednesday afternoon announced that a severe weather alert is in effect for Jamaica, issuing a bulletin with a warning for marine interests.

According to the bulletin, a strong tropical wave is producing an area of disturbed weather east of the southern Windward Islands and is about to enter the southern Caribbean Sea.

The wave is reportedly showing signs of becoming better organised and, according to the Met Service, there is a high potential for development into a tropical depression over the next couple days.

As the disturbance moves west-northwestward toward the central Caribbean later this week, there is an increasing threat of severe weather to Jamaica as it moves close to the island and over territorial waters by Saturday morning, the bulletin said.

It is also likely that it would be a tropical cyclone at that time, the Met Service said.

“Fishers on the cays and banks are further urged to complete their preparations and be on the alert to evacuate,” the Met Service said.

It also said it will continue to monitor the progress of the system,

LETTER: About Mill Reef Club and my right of way to the dock

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

To Whom it May Concern.

I write to ask the question in search of clarification on whether the Mill Reef Club has been granted dispensation to operate outside of the laws which govern our land of Antigua and Barbuda. I am appealing any information that can be offered to me on this matter by those in the know.

As a fisherman who has operated out of the fishing dock for over 30 years, I have long been subjected to the continued efforts of the Mill Reef Club to impede local fishermen from accessing the fishing dock and ultimately prohibit our right to make use of said fishing dock.

I am also fully aware that as the dock is located on one of Antigua’s beaches, locally known as Frye’s Head, I should have full right of access.

Despite my boat being moored there and me having used this dock to go fishing each day for a substantial portion of my life, I have encountered more attempts than I can count whereby the security and management will concoct one bogus reason or another to prevent my right of way to the dock.

This despite it being well known that one of the conditions that had originally been agreed between Mill Reef and the local fishermen was that they would continue to have unobstructed access to the beach that they had used to moor their boats and conduct their business since time immemorial.

Therefore, I can think of no legitimate reason that there should be any dispute about any of the local fishermen being able to work out of Frye’s Head Beach. Nevertheless, over the years, the Mill Reef Club have actively taken steps to inhibit my access and impacted my livelihood.

There have also been occasions where my wife who has regularly accompanied me to the dock has been prevented from entering the Mill Reef Club. On one occasion the Mill Reef security staff even acknowledged that while they were aware it was my truck that she was driving, they would not let my wife into the premises despite them having full knowledge that she had dropped me to the fishing dock that morning and that I was waiting on the dock for her to collect me!

As part of my work, I regularly do deep sea diving with tanks which holds inherent dangers, therefore instances such as I have described above have left me with understandable concerns that should I face an emergency where for example I required someone to bring me oxygen or any other form of urgent assistance, would Mill Reef personnel prevent this potentially lifesaving equipment from being delivered to me?

Understandably this ongoing situation causes unnecessary stress, and I am baffled as to why anybody should have to face irrational and unmerited obstacles when trying to earn a living.

I am not an employee of the Mill Reef Club and have no interest in any of their properties or equipment so feel that their treatment is wholly unreasonable.

Due to these unjustified actions of the Mill Reef Club personnel, myself and fellow local fisherman have been forced to take time out of work and incur personal financial costs to seek legal counsel in a bid resolve the issue once and for all.

This action was taken in the hope that it would thereby enable us to go about our daily business without the excessive and unwarranted attempts which effectively prevent us from making an honest living as is our full right to do so.

I suspect that it is possible that the lawyers that were approached were intimidated by the weight that the Mill Reef Club name carries which may have deterred them from taking up the case, as ultimately, I was unable to secure representation.

However, the fact that whenever I have challenged the Mill Reef Club to produce any paperwork to support their stance and inconsistent policies with regard to accessing the Frye’s Head fishing dock they are unable to do so, tells me that their actions are completely arbitrary and, in my opinion, reveals their discrimination towards Antiguan nationals.

Not only does it seem that the lawyers are intimidated, but this appears to be the case for the Government also (specifically the Fisheries division).

As mentioned previously, this situation has been happening to fishermen for a long while at the Mill Reef Club, and we as fishermen are constantly having to be battling for our own rights which were handed down by the court and clarify the agreement between Mill Reef and the Fishermen.

There was an occasion that they called a meeting with the intention it seemed to intimidate us as present at that meeting were policemen, coast guards, fisheries agents, Mill Reef lawyers, some Club members and management members.

Only us Fishermen were on our own with them telling the authorities that they only wanted to let in Fishermen with license.

Firstly, there should be no barrier across the entrance to the Mill Reef Club as this prevents anyone from entering, even beach goers.

There have been many times that the security has given us a hard time to enter resulting in us having no choice but to block the road until police arrive.

They eventually end up allowing access, but I think it is essential that the police need to educate themselves about the history of Mill Reef and the Fishermen and the ruling from the court case to prevent these instances from happening time and time again.

I would very much welcome a copy of that judgement if anyone can assist as it seems as if the white owners at the Mill Reef Club do not want to be in our midst, but only to enjoy our country.

What is right is right and what is wrong is wrong and this behaviour surely falls into the latter category and therefore must be challenged.

I would appreciate any and all genuine responses which may assist in finding a favourable resolution in order for me to go about earning a living without the harassment and stress that is currently being afforded to me and my fellow fishermen by the Mill Reef Club.

Signed, A Humble Fisherman

A plane has crashed at Eteringbang in Region Seven this afternoon. An investigation has been launched.

See below full statement issued by the Guyana Police Force:

At about 16:18 hrs today at Eteringbang Airstrip, one twin engine Aircraft #8R-GGT owned by Jags Aviation Limited and piloted by 46-year-old Captain Errol Pearson, was damaged after it reportedly ‘ran off’ the runway and into some nearby bushes.

According to Captain Pearson, on 2022-08-21 at about 14:32 hrs, he departed the Ogle International Airport en route to Eteringbang Airstrip with ten passangers — seven adults and three children.

On landing at Eteringbang Airstrip, the plane was unable to ‘nudge’ because of heavy tailwind which caused the plane to ran off the runway into some nearby bushes.

This resulted in the left wing, nose and left landing gear being damaged. No one was injured.

The plane is being guarded at the airstrip.

PAHO Urges Countries To Strengthen Surveillance, Routine Vaccination Campaigns – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: St. Lucia Times News

While COVID-19 continues to take around 4,000 lives each week in the Americas, and monkeypox cases rise, the polio virus has now been detected among unvaccinated communities in New York.

In light of this, the Pan American Health Organization Director (PAHO) has called on countries to urgently strengthen surveillance and routine vaccination campaigns.

Although the United States has mounted a swift public health response following the detection, polio is a disease that “I never expected to see in our region again,” Dr Etienne said during a media briefing today.

“It’s been nearly 30 years since the Americas became the first global region to wipe out wild polio,” but “dwindling vaccination rates, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, have left many of our populations unprotected.”

Polio, which can spread quickly among communities with insufficient vaccination coverage is not a treatable disease but is fully preventable with vaccines.

Yet today, vaccination coverage has fallen below 80% in nearly all of South America, and 12 countries in the region are at High or Very High risk of experiencing an outbreak.

PAHO has been working closely with the United States and has issued several alerts to Member States to remain vigilant and take measures to proactively reach unvaccinated populations with a polio vaccine.

“We must not take the lifesaving power of vaccines for granted,” said Dr. Etienne.

The PAHO Director also urged countries of the region to step up their COVID-19 vaccination campaigns, particularly in the Caribbean, where a number of islands are falling behind.

“If we remain committed, we can keep COVID-19 under control,” she said. “Not by ignoring it but by continuing to make use of the many tools we have at our disposal to trace, and most importantly prevent, infections.”

This includes public health measures that must be promoted, particularly “in places where many remain unvaccinated, or where cases are climbing.”

Turning to the monkeypox outbreak in the region, the PAHO Director warned that cases are also on the rise in parts of the Americas and while deaths remain extremely rare, those with weakened immune systems are at risk of complications from monkeypox infection.

PAHO has been working on the expansion of testing capacity in the region but countries must “act now to control the spread,” particularly while vaccine supplies remain limited.

Active engagement of affected communities is crucial, urged Dr. Etienne. Testing and contact tracing can also have a significant impact on reducing transmission.

As PAHO prepares to meet with Ministers of Health from across the region at the Pan American Sanitary Conference, Dr. Etienne highlighted the opportunity to discuss challenges towards ensuring health in the region and make agreements on how to move forward.

This landmark event is not only a chance to look back and learn from the past but also an “opportunity to look towards the future and our vision of a more equitable region, in which we work together to improve health for all,” she said.

NY Attorney General sues Donald Trump and his company Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

New York’s attorney general sued former President Donald Trump and his company on Wednesday, alleging business fraud involving some of their most prized assets, including properties in Manhattan, Chicago and Washington, DC.

Attorney General Letitia James’ lawsuit, filed in state court in New York, is the culmination of the Democrat’s three-year civil investigation of Trump and the Trump Organisation. Trump’s three eldest children, Donald Jr, Ivanka and Eric Trump, were also named as defendants, along with two longtime company executives, Allen Weisselberg and Jeffrey McConney.

The lawsuit seeks to strike at the core of what made Trump famous, taking a blacklight to the image of wealth and opulence he’s embraced throughout his career — first as a real estate developer, then as a reality TV host on ‘The Apprentice’ and ‘Celebrity Apprentice’, and later as president.

James, a Democrat, announced details of the lawsuit at a news conference on Wednesday. The case showed up on a court docket Wednesday morning.

“Donald Trump falsely inflated his net worth by billions of dollars to unjustly enrich himself, and cheat the system, thereby cheating all of us,” James said at the news conference.

The goal, the attorney general’s office has said, was to burnish Trump’s billionaire image and the value of his properties when doing so gave him an advantage while playing down the value of assets at other times for tax purposes.

James is seeking to remove the Trumps from businesses engaged in the alleged fraud and wants an independent monitor appointed for no less than five years to oversee the Trump Organisation’s compliance, financial reporting, valuations and disclosures to lenders, insurers and tax authorities.

She is seeking to replace the current trustees of Trump’s revocable trust, which controls his business interests, with independent trustees, to bar Trump and the Trump Organisation from entering into commercial real estate acquisitions for five years, from obtaining loans from banks in New York for five years and permanently bar Trump and his three eldest children from serving as an officer or director in any New York corporation or similar business entity registered and/or licensed in New York State.

She also seeks to permanently bar Weisselberg and McConney from serving in the financial control function of any New York corporation or similar business entity registered and/or licensed in New York State.

James said her investigation uncovered potential criminal violations, including falsifying business records, issuing false financial statements, insurance fraud, conspiracy and bank fraud. She said her office is referring those findings to federal prosecutors and the Internal Revenue Service.

Alina Habba, an attorney for Trump, said the lawsuit “is neither focused on the facts nor the law — rather, it is solely focused on advancing the Attorney General’s political agenda”.

“It is abundantly clear that the Attorney General’s Office has exceeded its statutory authority by prying into transactions where absolutely no wrongdoing has taken place,” Habba said. “We are confident that our judicial system will not stand for this unchecked abuse of authority, and we look forward to defending our client against each and every one of the Attorney General’s meritless claims.”

Une hausse du carburant est-elle la bienvenue ?

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Le Nouvelliste
