Tourism Workers and Citizens to Benefit from SKNLP’s Proposals

Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 29, 2022 (SKNLP) — Workers in the Tourism industry received great news from Dr.  Terrance Drew, leader of the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) at a campaign rally in Tabernacle on July  28, 2022. He referenced the slow season and the difficulties experienced by these workers when hours and  salaries are cut during this period.

Dr. Drew declared, “The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party believes strongly that workers in this vital sector deserve  to have a reliable, realistic wage to meet their day to day and week to week family commitments”. He outlined  that the plan involves setting aside a portion of CBI revenues that will augment workers wages during the slow  season. He explained the formula when he stated, “If you were working for $400 a week during the season, we  will monitor occupancy levels and room rates and ensure that in the months where these fall below par, we are  in a position to work with hotels to provide payroll support”.

The mammoth crowd welcomed this proposal in the genuine way it was presented. The SKNLP’s leader  simplified the deal by stating, “We cannot have people working for $400 a week in February and March and  then by May, June and July they are carrying home $175 a week”. He emphasized that Labour will be there for  all citizens of the Federation.

In another extraordinary reveal, Dr. Drew announced that proceeds from the CBI program would be used to pay  two dividends every six months to workers who contribute to Social Security. He stated, “I am all for the large  capital projects that this program is enabling. I am also in full support and appreciative of the contribution it  makes to the national consolidated fund of government. But we believe strongly that if this program is about the  patrimony of the Kittitian and Nevisian people, then each of them should receive a dividend in their hand as a gesture of appreciation for welcoming new citizens to this land”.

Dr. Drew concluded by stating his support for the sustenance of capital projects but endeavoured to ensure that  the average citizens and residents must also share in the spoils of the CBI program. However, he reminded all  comrades and citizens that the only way to realize these new and far-reaching proposals is to vote for all eight  candidates of the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party.

It was an atmosphere of maturity and a good measure of respect and unity among the trio of Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Pearnel Charles Jr; State Minister in the ministry, Frank Witter; and Opposition Spokesman on Agriculture, Lothian Cousins, on stage on Saturday at the Denbigh Agricultural, Industrial and Food Show in Clarendon, which was captured as Loop News’ Photo of the Day.

It was certainly a good sign that spoke volumes for the national drive to lift agriculture to much higher levels locally.

New York declares state disaster emergency for monkeypox outbreak

Black Immigrant Daily News

NPR-NEW YORK — Officials in New York City declared a public health emergency due to the spread of the monkeypox virus Saturday, calling the city “the epicenter” of the outbreak.

The announcement Saturday by Mayor Eric Adams and health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan said as many as 150,000 city residents could be at risk of infection. The declaration will allow officials to issue emergency orders under the city health code and amend code provisions to implement measures to help slow the spread.

In the last two days, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state disaster emergency declaration and the state health department called monkeypox an “imminent threat to public health.”

New York had recorded 1,345 cases as of Friday, according to data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. California had the second-most, with 799.

“We will continue to work with our federal partners to secure more doses as soon as they become available,” Adams and Vasan said in the statement. “This outbreak must be met with urgency, action, and resources, both nationally and globally, and this declaration of a public health emergency reflects the seriousness of the moment.”

The World Health Organization declared monkeypox a global health emergency on July 23 and San Francisco’s mayor on Thursday announced a state of emergency over the growing number of cases.

The once-rare disease has been established in parts of central and west Africa for decades but was not known to spark large outbreaks beyond the continent or to spread widely among people until May, when authorities detected dozens of epidemics in Europe, North America and elsewhere.

To date, there have been more than 22,000 monkeypox cases reported in nearly 80 countries since May, with about 75 suspected deaths in Africa, mostly in Nigeria and Congo. On Friday, Brazil and Spain reported deaths linked to monkeypox, the first reported outside Africa. Spain reported a second monkeypox death Saturday.

The virus spreads through prolonged and close skin-to-skin contact as well as sharing bedding, towels and clothing. In Europe and North America, it has spread primarily among men who have sex with men, though health officials emphasize that the virus can infect anyone.

The type of monkeypox virus identified in this outbreak is rarely fatal, and people usually recover within weeks. But the lesions and blisters caused by the virus are painful.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is reporting that members of its staff from the Metcalfe Street Secure Juvenile Remand Centre in Kingston are safe following a gun attack in St Andrew on Saturday.

In a release, the DCS said reports from the staff officer on duty were that a department bus driven by a correctional officer was transporting early-night staff to their homes. On arriving on Maxfield Avenue at approximately 12:35 am, four gunmen reportedly opened fire at the bus.

The escort on board the vehicle returned the fire, which was said to have dissuaded the attackers.

The DCS said the incident has since been reported to the Half-Way-Tree Police Station.

The DCS expressed happiness that none of its staff members were injured in what it described as a brazen attack.

Lack of land space and support for Windwards’ mills hinder the establishment of a local feed mill, says Association president

Black Immigrant Daily News

Emanuel Peters, President of the Antigua & Barbuda Layer Farmers’ Association, says that a local feed mill probably would have prevented the increase in egg prices that went into effect today, July 25. CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHATS APP GROUP

The wholesale price of white and brown eggs has increased to $12 per dozen, or $360 a case, some 10 months after a hike in September last year. This is largely due to the ever-rising cost of feed and for the purchase of chicks.

The Association has sought to negotiate with the Government on relief measures and certain benefits.

However, Peters believes that not much can be done, because Antigua and Barbuda does not have a feed mill or its own shipping line to bring the feed here at a cheaper rate.

While a feed mill would be practical and beneficial to local farmers, Peters says, the downside is that there is not enough land space available for growing the inputs for feed production.

Additionally, there is an embargo – onto which Antigua and Barbuda has fully signed – to support the Windward Islands mills (inclusive of St. Lucia, Grenada and St. Vincent & The Grenadines), Peters says. Therefore, farmers are not able to fully capitalize on the market.

The egg-producing sector is one of the few in agriculture that is protected by the Government. It can be a lucrative industry; but it is a costly venture based on the time it takes a bird to lay its first egg and the amount of feed it consumes during this time.

Antigua and Barbuda is one of the few regional countries that is self-sufficient in egg production.- REAL NEWS

UPP Administration will pay what is owed to service providers, Tabor says

Black Immigrant Daily News

Senator Damani Tabor is encouraging party-goers and Carnival revelers to enjoy this weekend, taking every precaution to safeguard themselves from contracting the COVID-19 virus.

A version of band-o-rama will be held tonight at Carnival City and T-shirt Mas’ is slated for tomorrow, July 23. and it will attract hundreds of people.

Given that crime is on an apparent increase, Tabor, the United Progressive Party’s Public Relations Officer, says that residents should protect themselves – and their property, as well –

while enjoying these events.

Meanwhile, this year’s festivities have been scaled down quite a bit – not only because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but because many of the service providers have been owed since about 2015, while mas’ troupes are reportedly owed for 2017 to 2019.

This, sources say, is why only two of the country’s 14 mas’ troupes will be participating in this year’s celebration.

Tabor says those who are owed monies for services they provided to the annual festival will be paid under a UPP Administration.

Meanwhile, the PRO says that a UPP Government will link the festival to tourism in order to revolutionize the creative-arts industry.

The Cabinet says it is aware of a pent-up demand for entertainment and Carnival 2022 is expected to provide an avenue that every age group can enjoy.

However, a businessman associated with a Mas’ troupe tells REAL News the Cabinet should also acknowledge there was “also a pent-up expectation among those who are owed that they would have been paid after a four-year wait.”
