Chaguanas cops wage ‘spiritual warfare on crime’

police at Saith Park, Chaguanas on Saturday.

Central Division police partnered with several churches in an effort to find a spiritual solution to crime.

They hosted an all-day “word, worship and warfare” prayer and worship service on Saturday in Chaguanas.

The event saw scores of police gathered at Saith Park from around 9 am.

Acting ACP Curt Simon urged people to transform their hard hearts into soft ones so that people can coexist in love, unity, and peace.

Simon said, “The only person I know who has the power to change anyone is God. He said, ‘I can take the stony heart of men and give them a heart of flesh.’ That is what we are about here today.”

He was the brainchild of the event themed – The Watchmen.

He believes that crimes are not only physical but also spiritual.

Simon said, “Why would you want to tackle something spiritual, only in the flesh? The flesh is the manifestation of things. God is working in the spiritual realm. We know the battle is there. The Bible says the weapons of our war are not carnal but mighty. We believe in God, in Jesus.”

He said crime is a major issue in society and the division, like others in TT, as well as in other parts of the world like New York and Detroit in the US.

“TT has not escaped that, and neither has this division. We invite the criminals here as well. Those of you who have warrants, we might take you. We have been planning this for some months now. We believe that change has to come spiritually,” Simon said.

Simon estimated that there were over 100 officers at the event, including members of the Guard and Emergency Branch, the Inter-Agency Task Force, Central Division Task Force, Fraud Squad and CID.

Nine preachers, nine worship teams and nine “prayer warriors” were set to be part of the event.

Chairman of the Association of Evangelical Bible Churches (AEBC) and vice-president of the TT Council of Evangelical Churches, Rev Bickram Singh praised Simon for the initiative.

Singh recalled that over the past nine months, the council partnered with the police and hosted what they called the Jericho praise.

Members went to communities and prayed and hosted a mobile ministry.

“We had more than 50 assemblies going out on weekends and praying with communities. We are seeing the police not as an enemy, not as protectors but also as partners,” Singh said.

After every set of music and sermon, the police prayed.

Singh added, “I am proud to find out that the police have been meeting virtually every Thursday morning for over two years in what they call a prayer forum. From 5 am, when many of us are asleep, the police have been praying for this nation.”

Several churches shared biblical messages, such as the Restorative Centre Kingdom Community, Temple of Grace, and Shekinah Discipleship Ministries.

Pastor Gordon Garcia of the Tabaquite Open Bible Church spoke about the importance of family, adding that the church plays an important role.

Garcia said the Bible warns that men would become lovers of themselves, and become haters, that children would turn against their parents and parents against children. He called on men to teach their children the right things, including God’s word.

“These are the things we are facing as a society. The only way we can have control is when we surrender our lives to Jesus,” Garcia said.

“He can transform you. He is a miracle-working God. That child who is giving you problems, that child who is wayward, God can turn their lives around if you give him the opportunity. Men, let us rise and take our rightful place.”

Cemex/Trinidad Cement Ltd (TCL group) and Construama have partnered with On the Line General Hardware in Endeavour, Chaguanas to ensure customers receive proper assistance and improve the relationship with the distributors.

The initiative was launched and displayed to the public on Saturday morning. Upon entry, though the hardware is small, the products were placed neatly, and mostly every product was easy to find. TCL’s regional manager Guillermo Rojo said this is some of what this partnership entails and before launching the idea, the owners were given guidance on how their products should be placed in order to get more traction and sales.

Director of the hardware Amanda Rampersad said in addition to that, some of the training offered included improvement of customer service, and it was apparent when two customers were assisted with their searches swiftly.

Rojo said there are over 3,000 Construama stores over Latin America and On the Line General Hardware is the first English-speaking one, and by extension the first in the Caribbean.

“We’re really proud of it because it took a lot of time, energy, and learning from our colleagues in other countries from Cemex to come help and guide us on how to implement Construama in Trinidad. What we bring is abilities that they don’t have, like many don’t have certain tools or things and we can even offer certain discounts, and an ability to load faster and even faster deliveries.”

Owner Ashton Rampersad said once the idea was presented to him by TCL, he knew this was something he’d want to embark upon.

“Everything about the Construama partnership is like what I was trying to do for my hardware, the way the customer service was shown to me and everything. We wanted to be a hardware of the future, in terms of creating a digitalised platform for customers to shop.”

Ashton said the change that was seen with the provided training was accepted graciously as it was something he was hoping to achieve.

Amanda said they were already in the process of improving customer service, rebranding, marketing, and boosting their online presence, but with this Construama partnership, they can do so on a much larger scale.

“So, now it’s to get that global presence and Construama brand to help support that.”

She also touched on the future plans for the hardware which includes offering the eco-friendly cement TCL has been offering since last October. This eco-friendly cement called Vertua Eco Cement was created to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 15 to more than 40 per cent.

“TCL now has an eco brand so, we’re seeing as a hardware how we can get into the sustainability space, so we will now be one of the first hardwares to be leading that endeavour of being green within Trinidad.”

The selection process was done in June by TCL which picked four hardwares that carries its products and hosted a meeting before sending out contracts at the end of the month. On the Line General Hardware was the first to be chosen, and Reshma Singh TCL’s sales distribution segment manager said more partnerships like these will be seen soon. She said the training takes at least one month to complete.

“We don’t intend to go into the construction industry, we intend to partner with our distributors with initiatives such as Contsruama to increase their ability to service clients. Our priority is to professionalise our network because we are a global company and we can leverage that global presence to bring value.”

Singh added, “We have onboarded other distributors who will be deployed month by month and even in 2023. It’s not an initiative that is going to die after today. We will one by one onboard our distributors, we have over 400 distributors, it’s going to take us a while, but each distributor is welcomed.”

Iga Swiatek beats Ons Jabeur for 1st US Open title, 3rd Slam Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

Iga Swiatek turned in a stellar display befitting of her talent as she sealed the US Open title with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) defeat of Ons Jabeur.

Swiatek has perhaps been short of her very best in New York but, despite a second-set wobble, found her level on Saturday to win a third major – the youngest player to do so since Maria Sharapova in 2008.

Jabeur, the first woman to reach the final of Wimbledon and the US Open in the same season since Serena Williams in 2019, gave her all, forcing the world number one into a real battle in the middle of a tense second set.

It came down to a tie-break, but having won her last nine successive WTA finals in straight sets, Swiatek found the composure to pull through and cement her place at the summit of the game.

Nerves had Jabeur on the back foot from the off, with the Tunisian – the first African female to reach the singles final at Flushing Meadows in the Open Era – dropping serve to love to trail 2-0, with Swiatek swiftly going three to the good.

Jabeur stopped the rot for 3-1 before a display of power off both forehand and backhand gave the world number five two break points, the second of which she took, yet she could not keep the momentum going on her serve, conceding again and, this time, Swiatek did not let up, taking the set when her opponent sent a simple volley long.

Like in the first set, it was 2-0 when Swiatek broke, this time clipping a backhand down the line after latching onto a weak volley, Jabeur unable to assert any control.

A supreme backhand saw Swiatek take the next game, too, though she squandered a break chance when she appeared to be distracted by a shout from the crowd.

The pendulum swung firmly in Jabeur’s favour when she made it 4-4, only for the 28-year-old to then pass up three break points.

Having dug deep to get through Jabeur’s fightback, Swiatek had championship point at 40-30 up in the 12th game. As the crowd held their breath, the youngster changed racquets.

Perhaps it was forced, perhaps a ploy. Either way, the change backfired, Jabeur rolling off three successive points to force a tie-break.

Jabeur kicked a ball into the crowd in anger after an overhit forehand gifted Swiatek a 4-2 lead, but a trio of points mounted the pressure back to the other side of the court.

Yet it was pressure that Swiatek was able to handle, seeing out two Jabeur serves to turn the tables back in her favour and, on this occasion, she prevailed – Jabeur hitting long to end her brave fight.

Data Slam: Swiatek’s year of dominance

Jabeur and Swiatek entered Saturday’s showpiece with the most wins in 2022 and the latter has now matched former world number one Ash Barty’s best haul of 57 victories in a single season (set in 2019), a tally the 21-year-old will surely overtake.

The first top-seeded female player to reach the final at the US Open since Williams in 2014, Swiatek has matched the 23-time grand slam champion in another metric, too, becoming the first player to win seven titles in a single season since the American great did so eight years ago.

Swiatek is only the ninth player in the Open Era to win her third grand slam title before turning 22, after Sharapova, Justine Henin, both Williams sisters, Martina Hingis, Monica Seles, Steffi Graf and Chris Evert.

Ministry preaching safety first once again as school resumes Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

Minister of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Kay McConney is assuring the public that the safe return of students and staff is of the utmost importance.

While speaking on Saturday about the start of the new school year, the education minister asserted that Government sought to “create the right kind of environment for learning and for instruction”.

Minister McConney declared a full return to school on Monday, September 19, with several changes.

Schools will return to pre-pandemic schedules, extra-curricular activities will resume, three-feet social distancing has been discontinued and the mask-wearing mandate remains intact but with exceptions for outdoors, and hand sanitisation is mandatory at the entry of the school plant.

Addressing concerns about a possible spike following the resumption of face-to-face classes, the education minister appeased the public, stressing that the Ministry was in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

“Our first interest is ensuring we create the right kind of environment for learning and for instruction and in the event that we believe that is threatened significantly and that the ability of our students to be able to learn in a safe environment is, in fact, something that is being compromised, we will take the necessary decisions,” she stated.

“In the event, there is a spike, our first option is to ensure that we consult with our partner [the Ministry of Health and Wellness] and to take advice and to take lead from them, and then to ensure that we discuss with some of our other educational partners…and then we make a decision based on the facts at the time,” McConney added.

During the press conference, chief education officer, Dr Ramona Archer-Bradshaw, indicated that staff and students who exhibit COVID-19 symptoms while on school premises will be required to seek medical attention immediately and be tested.

Dr Archer-Bradshaw reminded parents and guardians that the pandemic was “not over”. She strongly advised parents not to send their ill children to school.

“We have to ensure that our children and staff members are safe so if your children present with symptoms at home – symptoms of COVID-19 – please keep them at home. Allow them to get the medical attention that is required. Take them to get tested.”
