As the destination continues its strong tourism recovery, Jamaica has welcomed over two million stopover arrivals for 2022 as of October in line with previous projections.

“It is truly gratifying to see our arrivals numbers returning to growth in recent months,” said Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett in an interview in New York.

“Having posted our best summer ever on record in 2022, and with arrivals now pacing well through fall, it is a clear demonstration that Jamaica’s tourism sector is indeed resilient, and has a lasting appeal among consumers.

“While we are a small nation compared to many others in the world, our naturally beautiful landscape, unique culture and variety of attractions and accommodations keep Jamaica at the top of travellers’ preferred places to visit.”

“We are extremely pleased to be among the destinations leading the world in tourism recovery,” added Director of Tourism, Donovan White.

“Since reopening in June 2020, we have been making a strong marketing push to ensure that Jamaica remains top of mind among our traditional and emerging source markets. Reaching this new milestone for 2022 is a testament to the success of our efforts and excellent relationships with our travel industry partners.”

For full year 2022, Jamaica is projecting that it will welcome over three million stopover arrivals and receive total earnings from tourism of over USD$3.7 billion.

The destination is also expected to return to 2019 pre-COVID arrival levels in 2023, and remains on track to welcome five million visitors annually by 2025.

To further support the tourism sector’s recovery, both Bartlett and White visited New York from November 2-4 to officially launch the island’s new ‘Come Back’ advertising campaign via a series of television appearances, media appointments and meetings, encouraging people to come back to their best selves in Jamaica.

PTSC enhances Port of Spain facility

File photo: Commuters board a deluxe PTSC bus servicing the San Fernando to Port of Spain route at the PTSC King’s Wharf terminal.

THE Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC) opened its modern information kiosk and coach passenger waiting lounge at its Port of Spain hub on Monday as part of its ongoing attempts to enhance the quality of its services.

The information booth is at the centre of the terminal, near the boarding area.

When Newsday visited the information hub. there was no one inside.

A PTSC official, who tried to help passengers for a few minutes, told Newsday the the customer service representative who staffed the kiosk had gone for lunch.

Because of this some passengers raised concerns over the efficiency and reliability of the new service.

One woman waiting for a bus praised the PTSC for the upgrades and asked for the quality of the new services to be maintained.

“It’s open and it’s seen. It’s good that it’s in the middle.

“But they need to ensure functions well, not only at the beginning but al all times. Like now, there is no one there. It must have somebody there all for this to work properly.”

Winston Harding, 68, was happy to see the new information booth.

“This is an improvement. What they need to work on now is the punctuality of the buses. I could say one thing: Grande service is very good. But regularity is what they need to work on also.

“If the bus services are reliable, they could turn around and have a level of profitability. This is definitely an improvement, but it all about reliability.”

The new waiting area is fitted with comfortable seating and special chairs for seniors and pregnant women, a TV, washroom and a changing station.

One person said compared to the previous lounge, “This one it’s definitely better, especially with the easy access to the washroom facilities.”

Ria Rampersad said, “It makes a difference – the accommodations, the seating, the washroom facilities, the AC. At least while you’re waiting you have a comfortable place to sit, and the service is faster. It’s more or less consistent. There isn’t a day where you come and a bus doesn’t arrive on time.”

Another traveller said, “Prior to the new one, the other was very dilapidated and run-down, with no air conditioning. It was like a little dump. Here (the new area) is pretty organised, except now there is nobody in the information booth. Usually they are very organised but I don’t know what is going on here today. But the service is nice and prompt compared to the old section.”

The PTSC has also recently refurbished its Sangre Grande coach waiting area and work on its San Fernando coach waiting area will start soon.

MP Hosein upset at lack of debate on crime

Barataria/San Juan MP Saddam Hosein.

Saddam Hosein, UNC MP for Barataria/San Juan, lamented on Friday that his earlier motion calling for an urgent parliamentary debate on violent crime had been disallowed, in a statement titled: Motion on crime deemed not definite, urgent and of public importance.

He said he had filed a motion in the House of Representatives to raise the outrageous crime situation.

This motion, he said, was based on an urgent need for the Government to account to citizens after more than 500 murders, plus robberies and home invasions.

“MP Hosein was informed by the Parliament at 12.57 pm today, via phone call, that the Speaker of the House was not satisfied that this matter of the outrageous crime situation was not urgent, definite and of public importance.”

He complained that his matter was not read during the sitting or placed on the Hansard record.

Hosein also alleged that the Government had abdicated its responsibility to protect citizens.

“While young students are hiding under their desks in schools from near rapid gunfire, persons being robbed and gunned down in broad daylight, the Government refuses to discuss the issue of crime. Today we have a Prime Minister in isolation, a sleeping Minister of National Security, and a government hiding from the electorate.

“The PNM Government is in hermit mode.”
