Whitley-Rae Davis is the JN Foundation Scholar for St Catherine Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

Twelve-year-old Whitley-Rae Davis was not surprised when she found out that she had earned a spot at Campion College in St Andrew, following the release of the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) results in July.

Campion College, one of the country’s most prestigious and sought-after secondary schools, was Whitley-Rae’s first choice, and she was determined to score the grades necessary to earn a place among Jamaica’s brightest young minds.

“I wasn’t surprised, because I knew that I had put in the work and I knew what I was capable of achieving,” said the St Catherine Preparatory graduate.

She admitted that she spent many long days and nights preparing for her exams and believe it was all worth it in the end.

Not only was Whitley-Rae successful in earning a spot at her school of choice, but her grades also earned her a five-year scholarship from The Jamaica National Group.

Her overall PEP score of 391.1, with a 352 in Science; 357 in Mathematics; 346 in Language Arts; and a 357 in Social Studies earned her the JN Foundation PEP scholarship for the parish of St Catherine.

Whitley-Rae is among 47 students, who, this year, were awarded JN PEP scholarships and bursaries. Since 1983, The Jamaica National Group has been supporting educational pursuits at the secondary and tertiary levels. The scholarship awards are one of its largest benevolent efforts.

The St Catherine native hopes to continue to blaze a trail of excellence, as she takes on the challenges of secondary education. She’s intent on remaining at the top of her class and hopes to continue to excel in her studies.

Her mother, Latoya Whitley, is not surprised by her daughter’s success. “I am very elated that she has done so well, which comes as no real surprise, as I know that she has the potential,” said Whitley, as she beamed with pride and joy.

She further spoke about the level of commitment shown by her daughter, whom she described as diligent, well-organised, focused, and hard-working. “She has always done well, and given the level of support that she got from us and also from her teachers, we anticipated that she would do well.”

Whitley-Rae’s future ambition is to become a paediatrician and she has her sights set on a top university.

“I’ve always admired the work that doctors do and from my experience of going to the paediatrician they were always kind to me, and I want to help other children in that way and to help them get better,” she said.

Her advice to students who will be sitting PEP next year is to: “Never give up no matter how hard it gets. Just keep a sense of determination to get through the challenges and long nights, because it will all be worth it in the end.”

Barrackpore man kills estranged wife, self in San Fernando

A 42-year-old teacher from San Fernando died in hospital on Friday morning after her estranged husband ambushed and shot her multiple times, then turned the gun on himself.

Keisha Bostic, of Drayton Street, died shortly after 7 am.

Her estranged husband Shamzard Mohammed, of Reece Road in Barrackpore, died in the yard of her family’s home.

The police found a gun with ammunition next to the body.

Distraught relatives who gathered at the house said the couple married in January. Bostic was staying in Barrackpore, but returned about two months ago to live at her family’s home in San Fernando.

Keisha Bostic, teacher and lawyer, was shot outside her home on Drayton Street, San Fernando by her husband Shamzard Mohammed on Friday morning.

The house is metres away from the Anstey Memorial Girls’ Anglican School. A few students could seen on the school grounds.

The police said at around 6.30 am, Bostic was driving her car out of the yard to head to work at a secondary school in Point Fortin.

Mohammed blocked her pathway with his car, confronted her and shot her several times.

Relatives took her to the San Fernando General Hospital.

Mohammed, 40, who worked as a contractor, then shot himself. The police said he had a firearm user’s licence.

Bostic’s mother, Marva Bostic, was inconsolable as she sat on a chair and waited for the police to remove Mohammed’s body from her yard.

People surrounded her and tried to comfort her. She did not mince words in expressing her grief and anger, calling on the police to get “that garbage” out of her yard. She also made suggestions at to what should be done with how his body.

“He did it because she left him,” the bereaved mother said.

Marva recalled leaving the house at around 5.30 am on Friday. She got a call about the tragedy around 7 am and returned.

Marva Bostic has now lost both her adult children to gun violence.

Her son Daniel Kenneth Bostic, 35, was shot and killed on July 1, 2015, in the Juma Masjid in San Fernando. The police said a man walked up from behind and shot him. The father of two fell to the ground, and the gunman shot him several more times before running away. That shooting happened in the month of Ramadan.

No one has been arrested for Daniel’s killing.

On the latest murder, senior superintendent of the Southern Division Richard Smith offered condolences to the Bostic family and “all the other families concerned in this tragedy.”

“We pray that our nation recovers from all the violence we see. We are asking that people exercise restraint, compassion, and love in responding to situations,” Smith said.

Although the couple were estranged, the police said no related domestic-violence reports had been filed at any police station in the division.

Smith said the police regularly patrol the district, especially in school zones.

Southern Division police including Insps Phillip and Lewis were at the scene. Homicide Bureau Region III police including Supt Dhillpaul, Cpl Smith and PC Ramoutar also visited and gathered evidence.

San Fernando major Junia Regrello also offered condolences to the Bostic family. He said Bostic was a former secretary of the PNM’s San Fernando West constituency group. He also referred to her as a hardworking and committed young woman. Bostic’s mother was also a PNM activist.

“This is another murder that would add to the growing number that we are disturbed about. There are so many stories of what went on. The fact is a mother lost another child. Let us hope that our main focus should be to be responsible and get our act together,” Regrello said. “There is no right way to do the wrong thing. Two families are now suffering because of the indiscretion of one person.”

Friday’s murder-suicide is not the first for the year.

On April 1, primary schoolteacher Amar Deobarran, 41, chopped and killed his wife Omatie, 36, at their home at Oropouche South Trace, Barrackpore. The mother of two worked as a supervisor at Bankers Insurance Ltd in Chaguanas. Deobarran drank poison and died hours after the attack.

Two weeks later, on April 16, Coast Guard officer Kester Williams shot and killed his wife, Sharsa Alfonso-David, and himself at their home at Edinburgh 500 in Chaguanas. Both were 47. Alfonso-David was a deputy general secretary of the Banking, Insurance and General Workers’ Union (BIGWU) in Barataria.

TEMA head: Numerous landslides in Tobago

Black Immigrant Daily News

TEMA director Allan Stewart –

The Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) is appealing to drivers and other road users to be careful on the roads.

The agency’s director Allan Stewart made the appeal while providing an update to Newsday on Friday after heavy showers overnight on Thursday into Friday.

He said on the Northside Road there were major landslides that would have caused some disturbance to traffic.

“(In) the Big River area – leaving Mason Hall to go to Craighall area – there is a major landslide that is still threatening. Part of it came down, and there are still trees hanging within the landslide itself.”

He said a situation on the Providence Road was exacerbated by a landslide that blocked the waterway.

“It created a huge area of flooding in a particular area, making it difficult for vehicles on the Providence Road – those that are proceeding towards Les Coteaux and these other villages.”

He said emergency crews were on the scene and were using pumps “to take down some of the water so that they can get to the blockage where the debris is lodged within the pipe, to do some clearing.”

Across at the Bloody Bay link road into Roxborough, he said, a major challenge remained.

“That is a major blockage as well – there is a challenge in itself, that there is a unusual landslide. It is one that is moving, it’s a slow creeping and allows the land to slide gradually across the roadway so it is blocked. If you move it, it comes back, it repeats itself.

“We have to wait on some sunlight to attempt to move it sufficiently so that it can allow for an ease or a thoroughfare of traffic once again.”

He said as a result people need to continue to be vigilant.

“Because of the level of saturation of the soil, we now are grossly in a period where there is high slope instability and as a result of that, even without rainfall, you would have landslides. You would have the possibilities of trees coming down, utility poles coming down and also even timber – houses built of timber could also collapse as well.”

French Parliament Halted As MP Shouts ‘Go Back To Africa’ – St. Lucia Times News

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said there was “no room for racism”.

The National Assembly’s bureau meet on Friday and will decide what action to take, after hearing from Mr de Fournas himself.

Mr Bilongo had been questioning the government about a request by the SOS Méditerranée non-governmental organisation for help in finding a port for 234 migrants rescued at sea in recent days.

The exact meaning of the National Rally MP’s remark was unclear, because in French it could either refer to one person or more. The official account of the session recorded his off-microphone remark as Qu’il retourne en Afrique – “he should go back to Africa” – but the plural Qu’ils retournent en Afrique sounds exactly the same.

When Mr de Fournas made his remark, the Speaker, Yaël Braun-Pivet, demanded to know who had spoken. Then, as MPs chanted “Out! Out! Out!”, she suspended the session, declaring, “This is not possible.”

Mr Bilongo, an MP from the the left-wing party France Unbowed (LFI), said: “Today it’s come back to the colour of my skin. I was born in France, I am a French MP.”

Mr de Fournas was adamant he had been referring to the “boat transporting migrants to Europe”, but he later apologised to Mr Bilongo for “the misunderstanding” his comments had caused and if he had been hurt by them.

LFI leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon tweeted that the MP’s comments were “beyond intolerable” and he should be kicked out of the National Assembly.

Immigration featured prominently in the RN’s presidential and parliamentary election campaigns this year, with party leader Marine Le Pen proposing a referendum on major reductions in immigration if she became president.

In the parliamentary election in June, the party increased its presence in the National Assembly tenfold, winning 89 seats.
