New York declares state disaster emergency for monkeypox outbreak

NPR-NEW YORK — Officials in New York City declared a public health emergency due to the spread of the monkeypox virus Saturday, calling the city “the epicenter” of the outbreak.

The announcement Saturday by Mayor Eric Adams and health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan said as many as 150,000 city residents could be at risk of infection. The declaration will allow officials to issue emergency orders under the city health code and amend code provisions to implement measures to help slow the spread.

In the last two days, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state disaster emergency declaration and the state health department called monkeypox an “imminent threat to public health.”

New York had recorded 1,345 cases as of Friday, according to data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. California had the second-most, with 799.

“We will continue to work with our federal partners to secure more doses as soon as they become available,” Adams and Vasan said in the statement. “This outbreak must be met with urgency, action, and resources, both nationally and globally, and this declaration of a public health emergency reflects the seriousness of the moment.”

The World Health Organization declared monkeypox a global health emergency on July 23 and San Francisco’s mayor on Thursday announced a state of emergency over the growing number of cases.

The once-rare disease has been established in parts of central and west Africa for decades but was not known to spark large outbreaks beyond the continent or to spread widely among people until May, when authorities detected dozens of epidemics in Europe, North America and elsewhere.

To date, there have been more than 22,000 monkeypox cases reported in nearly 80 countries since May, with about 75 suspected deaths in Africa, mostly in Nigeria and Congo. On Friday, Brazil and Spain reported deaths linked to monkeypox, the first reported outside Africa. Spain reported a second monkeypox death Saturday.

The virus spreads through prolonged and close skin-to-skin contact as well as sharing bedding, towels and clothing. In Europe and North America, it has spread primarily among men who have sex with men, though health officials emphasize that the virus can infect anyone.

The type of monkeypox virus identified in this outbreak is rarely fatal, and people usually recover within weeks. But the lesions and blisters caused by the virus are painful.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is reporting that members of its staff from the Metcalfe Street Secure Juvenile Remand Centre in Kingston are safe following a gun attack in St Andrew on Saturday.

In a release, the DCS said reports from the staff officer on duty were that a department bus driven by a correctional officer was transporting early-night staff to their homes. On arriving on Maxfield Avenue at approximately 12:35 am, four gunmen reportedly opened fire at the bus.

The escort on board the vehicle returned the fire, which was said to have dissuaded the attackers.

The DCS said the incident has since been reported to the Half-Way-Tree Police Station.

The DCS expressed happiness that none of its staff members were injured in what it described as a brazen attack.

Lack of land space and support for Windwards’ mills hinder the establishment of a local feed mill, says Association president

Emanuel Peters, President of the Antigua & Barbuda Layer Farmers’ Association, says that a local feed mill probably would have prevented the increase in egg prices that went into effect today, July 25. CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHATS APP GROUP

The wholesale price of white and brown eggs has increased to $12 per dozen, or $360 a case, some 10 months after a hike in September last year. This is largely due to the ever-rising cost of feed and for the purchase of chicks.

The Association has sought to negotiate with the Government on relief measures and certain benefits.

However, Peters believes that not much can be done, because Antigua and Barbuda does not have a feed mill or its own shipping line to bring the feed here at a cheaper rate.

While a feed mill would be practical and beneficial to local farmers, Peters says, the downside is that there is not enough land space available for growing the inputs for feed production.

Additionally, there is an embargo – onto which Antigua and Barbuda has fully signed – to support the Windward Islands mills (inclusive of St. Lucia, Grenada and St. Vincent & The Grenadines), Peters says. Therefore, farmers are not able to fully capitalize on the market.

The egg-producing sector is one of the few in agriculture that is protected by the Government. It can be a lucrative industry; but it is a costly venture based on the time it takes a bird to lay its first egg and the amount of feed it consumes during this time.

Antigua and Barbuda is one of the few regional countries that is self-sufficient in egg production.- REAL NEWS

UPP Administration will pay what is owed to service providers, Tabor says

Black Immigrant Daily News

Senator Damani Tabor is encouraging party-goers and Carnival revelers to enjoy this weekend, taking every precaution to safeguard themselves from contracting the COVID-19 virus.

A version of band-o-rama will be held tonight at Carnival City and T-shirt Mas’ is slated for tomorrow, July 23. and it will attract hundreds of people.

Given that crime is on an apparent increase, Tabor, the United Progressive Party’s Public Relations Officer, says that residents should protect themselves – and their property, as well –

while enjoying these events.

Meanwhile, this year’s festivities have been scaled down quite a bit – not only because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but because many of the service providers have been owed since about 2015, while mas’ troupes are reportedly owed for 2017 to 2019.

This, sources say, is why only two of the country’s 14 mas’ troupes will be participating in this year’s celebration.

Tabor says those who are owed monies for services they provided to the annual festival will be paid under a UPP Administration.

Meanwhile, the PRO says that a UPP Government will link the festival to tourism in order to revolutionize the creative-arts industry.

The Cabinet says it is aware of a pent-up demand for entertainment and Carnival 2022 is expected to provide an avenue that every age group can enjoy.

However, a businessman associated with a Mas’ troupe tells REAL News the Cabinet should also acknowledge there was “also a pent-up expectation among those who are owed that they would have been paid after a four-year wait.”

International Friendship Day- 10 of the best friendship traits Loop Cayman Islands

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Cayman Compass

When it comes to friendships, you are always going to be closer to some people than others. While many friends may fall into the “casual acquaintance” category, a special few sit comfortably within your inner circle of ride-or-die besties.

There are plenty of unique qualities that set a truly good friend apart, but chances are, you’ve never taken a moment to sit and think about what those traits are exactly.

So, this begs the question: How does someone make the cut, so to speak, and become one of your closest friends?

Let’s take a look at 10 of the best friendship traits you can look out for or share with someone you already know.

They’re trustworthy

Every relationship needs trust as a core quality, and friendships are no exception. Our friends should offer us caring, honest feedback, even when it might hurt. This creates a safe environment for everyone to discover themselves and grow.

They’re supportive

Supportive friends are a lifeline! Good friends offer us various kinds of support, such as emotional support when we’re feeling insecure and information support when we need to know how to handle problems or deal with ambiguities. This in turn gives us the reinforcement and encouragement we need to face life’s many demands.

They accept you as you are

You’re probably comfortable around your good friends because you can be yourself around them. A good friend is someone who will unconditionally accept you as you are, but will never be afraid to tell you the unpleasant truth of a situation or your behaviour.

They actively listen

While any friend may listen to what you have to say, a great friend actively listens and engages with you.

They show up during tough times

While it’s easy to be there for somebody during good times, it’s even more amazing to be there for them during the not-so-good periods of life. They help clean up after the party, come to your parent’s funeral, and pick you up from that doctor’s appointment you’ve been dreading. All the fun memories are easy to make, but these critical times are the true test of a friendship.

They have your best interest in mind

Sometimes, you may feel as though your good friends know you better than you know yourself. They root for you even when you aren’t feeling like your own biggest fan. Good friends will continually build you up, remind you how great you really are, and support you as you learn and grow throughout your life.

They’re loyal

You know that friend who drops everything to help you out? That’s the definition of a good friend. Loyal friends lighten our load and help shoulder the inevitable hurdles, stresses, and crises life throws at us.

They respect your differences

While it’s important to share interests, even best friends don’t have everything in common. The fact that friends aren’t exact clones of each other is what makes platonic relationships so fun and worthwhile. A good friend will understand this and respect the differences between you two.

They celebrate with you

When your bestie wins, it feels like you win, too. Not only should a good friend be supportive, but they should also be able to celebrate you and your successes in life.

They’re forgiving

In friendships (and in life) nobody’s perfect, and a good friend recognizes that. Friends recognize that people make mistakes and they also realize that people are different and even good friends don’t always agree or think the same about every issue.
