All three Jamaican men are through to the semi-finals of the 100m at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Oblique Seville, 21, has the fastest time of the trio.

The Calabar Old Boy won his heat in an impressive 9.93s, slowing down and even finding time to look around before crossing the finish line.

The 20-year-old Ackeem Blake, a past student of Merlene Ottey High who is competing in his first senior championships, finished second in his heat in 10:15s.

The 2011 World Champion, Yohan Blake, was also second in his heat in 10:04.

Blake is the fastest Jamaican this year, having run 10:85s at last month’s national trials. Seville has run 10:86s and Ackeem Blake 9:93s this season. They may need to run close to those times to get out of the semi-finals.

The Americans who are favoured for a possible podium sweep had some impressive times with Fred Kerley leading the pack, winning his heat in 9:79s. Trayvon Brommel won his heat in 9:89s while Marvin Bracy won his heat in 10:05s.

L’Agence régionale de santé (ARS) informe, ce vendredi 15 juillet, de la découverte d’un premier cas confirmé de Monkeypox (communément appelé la variole du singe) en Martinique. 

Une personne adulte présentant des symptômes légers, compatibles à une infection par le virus Monkeypox, a été prise en charge il y a quelques jours, indique, ce vendredi 15 juillet, l’Agence Régionale de Santé de Martinique. Il s’agit d’un résident « avec notion de voyage dans une région où circule le virus ». 

Cette personne a immédiatement été mise à l’isolement à son domicile. À ce jour, l’état de santé du patient ne présente aucun signe de gravité. L’ARS de Martinique et l’équipe de Santé publique France Antilles, en lien avec le médecin ayant pris en charge cette personne, ont rapidement débuté les investigations afin de retracer au plus vite la chaîne de contacts de ce patient et ont pu établir l’absence de contact proche depuis son retour sur le territoire. 

 

Recommandations en cas d’exposition à risque

Dès l’apparition de symptômes évocateurs d’infection par le virus Monkeypox, il est demandé de s’isoler et contacter le 15 qui vous orientera vers une consultation médicale. 

 

Ouverture de la vaccination préventive 

Face à la diffusion du virus Monkeypox (variole du singe), la Haute Autorité de santé, saisie par la Direction générale de la santé a recommandé dans son avis du 7 juillet 2022 qu’une vaccination préventive soit proposée aux groupes de personnes les plus exposés au virus. Cette offre vaccinale s’étend également en Martinique. Le conseil municipal du Prêcheur a procédé, ce vendredi soir (15 juillet), à l’élection du nouveau maire, après la démission de Marcellin Nadeau, appelé à d’autres fonctions à l’Assemblée Nationale.

Le nouveau maire du Prêcheur est connu. Il s’agit d’Alain Germain Duton. Ce vendredi soir, il a été élu lors d’une réunion du conseil municipal en mairie. Les résultats ont été proclamés par le maire démissionnaire, Marcellin Nadeau.

Sur 15 conseiller, hormis le maire démissionnaire, un autre était absent. 13 ont donc voté, dont un par procuration. Alain Germain Duton a obtenu 11 voix. Son adversaire, Jean-Guy Gabriel, en a recueilli 1. Il y a eu un vote blanc.

 Les quatre adjoints ont également été élus, par 12 voix et une abstention. Il s’agit de

Christian Constantin, Guylaine Joseph-Angélique, Jean-Guy Gabriel (3ème adjoint) et Yvette Félicité (4ème adjoint).

140 new COVID cases, two deaths, 20% positivity rate recorded Loop Jamaica

The Ministry of Health and Wellness is reporting that 140 new COVID-19 cases were recorded over a 24-hour period up to Thursday afternoon.

Two COVID-19 deaths that occurred from January to July were also recorded on Thursday, bringing the overall coronavirus death toll in Jamaica to 3,166.

A 62-year-old man from Westmoreland and an 82-year-old man from Kingston and St Andrew are the latest recorded COVID fatalities nationally.

There were 98 recoveries on the day, bringing that tally to 92,126.

The newly confirmed COVID-19 cases brought the total number on record for the island to 144,489.

Notably, the island recorded a 20 per cent positivity rate based on the samples that were tested on Thursday.

Of the newly confirmed cases, 96 are females and 44 are males, with ages ranging from four months to 92 years.

The case count was made up of Kingston and St Andrew (53), St Catherine (17), St James (15), Clarendon (14), St Ann (10), St Thomas (10), Manchester (seven), Trelawny (four), Westmoreland (four), Hanover (two), St Elizabeth (two), and St Mary (two).

There are 19 moderately ill patients, seven severely ill patients and two critically ill patients among 1,183 active cases now under observation in Jamaica.

A total of 92 COVID-19 patients are now hospitalised locally.

Adelle Tracey has advanced to the semi-finals of the 1500m at the Eugene, World Athletics Championships after finishing 6th in her heat in a time of 4:05.14.

The first six athletes in the three heats all advanced to the semi-finals.

The 29-year-old Tracey who will also contest the 800m, is wearing the Jamaican colours for the first time.

She is the daughter of Jamaica College quarter miler Nicholas Tracey and a British mother. She represented England from the age of 16 years old. She decided to switch allegiance to Jamaica and got the all clear just in time to make the team to Eugene.

There was so much uncertainty about whether she would have made the team that Tracey was introduced as a “guest runner” at last month’s Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association National Championships where she won the 1500m.

She was cleared to represent Jamaica on June 27, one day after the conclusion of the four-day championships.

Nine women honoured as ‘Science and Technology XXtrordineers’ Loop Jamaica

The Scientific Research Council (SRC) paid homage to nine women who have contributed to the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) field. The women, dubbed ‘Science & Technology XXtrordineers’, were recognised for facilitating growth in STEM and encouraging children to get involved in the field.

They are Dr Simone Badal, Dr Winklet Gallimore, Dr Michelle Hamilton, Dr Ava Maxam, Dr Lisa Myer-Morgan, Professor Alison Nicholson, Dr Phylicia Ricketts, Professor Marcia Roye and Professor Tannecia Stephenson. According to Minister of Science, Energy and Technology Daryl Vaz, the recognition of women will help inspire youths and assist in reducing the gender gap in STEM. Vaz said data show that only 30 per cent of the world’s women are researchers, and only 18 per cent of women are pursuing STEM studies at the tertiary level.

To this end, he reiterated the government’s commitment to building the sector.

Vaz was speaking at the first staging of the Science and Technology XXtrordineers Recognition Programme at the Terra Nova Hotel on Thursday, July 14.

“We are cognizant of the important role of science in creating new knowledge, solving problems and improving quality of life. In this regard, we have not lapsed in providing the policy support through the Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I) policy; or facilitated partnerships and collaborations with international bodies to propel the discipline further and support endeavours,” Vaz said. Executive Director, SRC, Dr Charah T. Watson, said the programme forms part of the Council’s mandate to popularise science and technology and foster a scientific culture among Jamaicans.

Dr Ava Maxam, who responded on behalf of the honourees, expressed gratitude to the SRC for the recognition. She thanked all those who paved the way for women in science. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Board of Directors of SRC, Dr Parris Lyew-Ayee requested that Jamaican scientists encourage more participation in STEM by making their studies and work more relatable to ordinary Jamaicans.

The S&T XXtrordineers recognition programme will be used as an avenue to highlight and bring awareness to the successes of exceptional Jamaican female scientists through docuseries, publications and visuals.

Today Friday July 15, 2022 the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs reports a total of 61 new cases of COVID-19 from samples processed on Wednesday July 13, 2022 and Thursday July 14, 2022.

This is from a total of 306 samples, of which 269 samples are from the Ezra LongLaboratory and 37 samples from the Laboratory Services and Consultations Limited.

These samples were collected from July 11, 2022 to July 14, 2022. This number of positive cases makes up 19.9% of all the samples processed on that date. These new cases bring the total number of cases diagnosed in country to date to 27, 464.

Confirmation was also received of the recovery of 35 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19. This brings the number of active cases in country to date to 161. Currently, there are seven positive cases of COVID-19 admitted at the Respiratory Hospital.

To date, a total of 54, 459 individuals have been fully vaccinated. Another 5, 277 are partially vaccinated and 7, 674 have received their booster shot.

Vaccination will take place tomorrow Saturday July 16, 2022 at various Wellness Centres as per the published COVID-19 vaccination schedule. Vaccination will be available from 9am to 12noon.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs will continue providing daily updates to the public as new information becomes available.

One man reportedly received injuries during a drive-by shooting incident just before midday, today, Friday, July 15.

Police are investigating the shooting incident which occurred at Nelson Street, St Michael.

The 34-year-old injured victim suffered an abrasion to the side of his head and foot injuries. According to police, he reported being shot at by a number of men in a car.

Investigations are ongoing.

Le Conseil de sécurité de l’ONU a adopté vendredi à l’unanimité une résolution des Etats-Unis et du Mexique demandant aux Etats membres de l’Organisation d’interdire le transfert d’armes légères aux gangs sévissant en Haïti, sans aller jusqu’à décider d’un embargo comme l’avait réclamé avec insistance dans la semaine la Chine.

Le texte “appelle les États membres à interdire le transfert d’armes légères et de petit calibre et de munitions à des acteurs non étatiques engagés dans ou soutenant la violence des gangs, des activités criminelles ou des violations des droits humains en Haïti”.

La Chine, qui avait réclamé l’imposition d’un embargo sur les armes légères à destination des gangs en Haïti, a estimé que “cette résolution était un avertissement” pour ces derniers.

Des sanctions individuelles pourraient être prises dans les 90 jours en vertu de la résolution à l’encontre de leurs chefs, a souligné après le vote l’ambassadeur chinois à l’ONU, Zhang Jun.

Le texte aurait “pu être meilleur”, a-t-il ajouté, estimant cependant qu’il s’agissait “d’un bon pas dans le bon sens”.

Tout au long de la semaine, Pékin s’était montré à l’offensive pour durcir le texte proposé par les Etats-Unis et le Mexique, jugé trop mou alors que Haïti s’enfonce dans la crise.

La Chine avait ainsi jugé jeudi qu’”un embargo sur les armes contre les gangs criminels était le minimum que le Conseil doive faire en réponse à une situation épouvantable”.

L’ambassadeur chinois a une nouvelle fois déploré vendredi “le vide du pouvoir” en Haïti, une “situation humanitaire (qui) se détériore” et la “violence des gangs”.

– Saisie d’armes –

Sur le dossier haïtien, Pékin est devenu à l’ONU un acteur de plus en plus important ces dernières années.

La raison? Une volonté chinoise de représailles, assurent des diplomates occidentaux, après la reconnaissance de Taïwan par Port-au-Prince.

Pékin dément de son côté établir tout lien entre les deux sujets.

Coïncidence ou pas, avec les négociations ardues qui se sont tenues sur le renouvellement de la mission politique onusienne Binuh, les autorités haïtiennes ont procédé à une rare saisie d’armes au port de la capitale, Port-au-Prince.

L’administration haïtienne des douanes a indiqué jeudi soir avoir, dans le premier des trois conteneurs ciblés, déjà mis la main sur “18 armes de guerre, 4 pistolets de calibres 9 mm, 14.646 cartouches, 140 chargeurs, un viseur et 50.000 dollars américains en faux”.

Plusieurs mandats d’arrêt ont été émis contre des individus suspectés d’être liés à l’arrivée de cette cargaison en Haïti.

Outre l’absence d’embargo sur les armes, la Chine n’a pas non plus réussi à imposer le lancement de consultations sur l’envoi en Haïti d’une force de police régionale afin de pacifier le pays.

La résolution se limite à demander à Antonio Guterres d’étudier avec des pays de la région “les options possibles” pour renforcer la sécurité en Haïti, avec un rapport à remettre le 15 octobre prochain.

Au moins 89 personnes ont été tuées en une semaine dans des affrontements entre gangs à Port-au-Prince, où les prix s’envolent et les carences de carburant s’aggravent toujours davantage, menaçant l’aide humanitaire cruciale pour les habitants.

La résolution “exige la cessation immédiate de la violence des gangs et des activités criminelles”. Elle reconduit le mandat de la Binuh jusqu’au 15 juillet 2023.

Dans la capitale haïtienne, les habitants se montraient pessimistes vendredi sur la capacité de l’ONU à améliorer la situation.

Un étudiant en droit, Fleurant Duceppe, jugeait ainsi que la Binuh avait “failli à sa mission”, en échouant à enrayer la hausse de l’insécurité.

Cette mission “ne nous est utile en rien. C’est à nous, le peuple, de prendre notre destin en main”, déclarait-il à l’AFP.

Une belle arrivée lors de la première étape du jour à Baie-Mahault – Sandy Traigneau

Ce vendredi a eu lieu deux étapes du Traditour. Les voiliers ont quitté Petit-Canal dans un premier temps pour rejoindre Baie-Mahault puis Deshaies. Une longue journée ensoleillée remportée par Jean Forbin et son équipage. 

C’est Jean Forbin et son équipage “Guadeloupe Port Caraïbe” qui réalise un beau doublé aujourd’hui durant les deux étapes du Traditour. “Nous avons pris un bon départ à Petit-Canal, nous étions bien placés, notre bateau à bien fonctionné. En s’écartant de la flotte, nous avons pu avancer assez rapidement durant l’étape de ce matin à Petit-Canal. On ne se pose pas trop de questions, nous essayons de faire autant de temps que nous pouvons” explique l’un des membres de l’équipe, Jean-Felix Forbin. 

Demain, les patrons poursuivront sur la Basse-Terre en partant de Deshaies dès le matin pour rejoindre Gourbeyre.
