REAL NEWS:

An All Saints resident is asking the man who robbed him to return his cell phone, since critical medical information is stored on the device.

The man tells REAL News he was held up, last week, by a man who was dressed completely in black with a T-shirt wrapped around his head.

The incident took place at about 9:30 p.m. last Wednesday, November 9, in the parking lot of a Pentecost Church in All Saints.

Along with his Blu V91 cell phone, the victim says the gun-toting bandit relieved him of a bunch of keys and his wallet, with all his ID and bank cards.

Reportedly, the robber also wanted the keys to the victim’s pick-up, but he did not hand them over. Instead, the man ran to a nearby house where the home-owner called the Police.

The man is grateful that he was not harmed, but says the return of his phone would be greatly appreciated.

Not only does he need the medical information saved in the cell, but the key to access his medication is stored there, as well, he says.

Thieves steal possessions of cruise-ship tourists at Fort James, while two locals are robbed of documents and cash

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

REAL NEWS: Cruise ship passengers were among a number of persons who fell victim to larceny, and the Police are now investigating these incidents.

According to reports, a German couple, aged 54 and 55 years, respectively, arrived in Antigua aboard the AIDA Pearla and decided to visit Fort James.

They left their bag – containing an iPhone, a Samsung cell phone, a pair of Apple ear pods, two cruise tickets, and a small amount of US dollars and Euros – on the beach while they went swimming.

When they returned from their swim they realized the bag was missing, and they informed an on-duty lifeguard, who, in turn, made a report to the Police.

The incident occurred between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Meanwhile, a 49-year-old Urlings woman reportedly had her handbag snatched by a young man early one morning last week.

The victim reports that she was sitting on the wall at the AIDS Secretariat on Long Street, and searching through her handbag, when the perpetrator grabbed it and fled.

The bag is said to have contained her Antigua and Barbuda passport; birth certificate; Social Security, Medical Benefits and Voter ID cards; and a Samsung A53 cell phone.

Also in the bag were US$200, EC$130, and the keys to her workplace locker.

The perpetrator is described as tall, slim, and light in complexion, and wearing braids whose ends are bleached gold.  Reportedly he was wearing denim shorts and a blue long-sleeved hooded shirt.

Police carried out a search of the area, but no one fitting that description was found.

In an unrelated story, a 62-year-old Barnes Hill man had his knapsack stolen by police impersonators.

Reportedly, he had been riding a pedal cycle, from west to east, on the Old Parham Road, when two unknown men in a silver Toyota Vitz pulled him over, near Hadeed Motors, shouting “Police! Police!”

They then searched the man and took his black knapsack – containing a bicycle pump and patch; a Digicel cell phone; an expired Jamaican passport; and $350 in cash – before making their escape.

PSC: New CoP in new year

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

News

File photo: Police Service Commission (PSC) chairman, retired Justice Judith Jones.

A new commissioner of police (CoP) will be appointed by January 31, 2023, the Police Service Commission (PSC) said in a statement on Tuesday extending the recruitment process deadline. The PSC gave itself an extra month, in order to vet the nominees.

The statement said that on July 8, the PSC had anticipated the recruitment and selection process would be done by the end of 2022. But on Tuesday it said, “The commission has commenced the process of vetting of all candidates as is required under the applicable law and governing the process for the establishment of an order-of-merit list for the office of Commissioner of Police.

“Unfortunately this process is now not expected to be completed by the end of 2022.”Additional time has become necessary to ensure for a proper and in-depth security vetting of candidates.”

The statement said the PSC believed it needed another month to complete the process.”Accordingly, the commission has extended the date for the completion of the selection process…to January 31, 2023.

“The commission wishes to thank all its stakeholders for their interest in the recruitment process.”

Under the Constitution, when the CoP post is publicly advertised, applicants are screened by the PSC secretariat, excluding commissioners, after which an independent assessment centre creates a shortlist which is sent to the President, who sends it to Parliament.

On the last occasion, a high government official reportedly intercepted the handing-over of the shortlist from the PSC to the President, after which the PSC imploded creating a constitutional crisis until the current board was put in place.

Amid all of this, retired justice Stanley John made an inquiry into an alleged bribery racket for firearm user’s licences, based on initial findings by retired rear admiral Hayden Pritchard and retired snr supt Arthur Barrington.

Former CoP Gary Griffith’s tenure saw record grants of FULs. Subsequently recent reports have arisen of several business owners using their guns to turn the tables on bandits, fatally.

On May 5, PSC chairman retired justice Judith Jones told the Joint Select Committee (JSC) on Local Authorities, Service Commissions and Statutory Authorities that the PSC had faith in the Strategic Services Agency (SSA) to carry out security checks on candidates, would advertise the post by June and hoped to complete selection by year-end.

In a statement on July 8, the PSC said it had just done a performance appraisal of Griffith for his term of January-August 2021. Griffith had said an appraisal should be quicker, since if a substantive CoP died suddenly, the police service would have no CoP for a year.
