Fred Locks Reflects on ‘Black Star Liner’ as Jamaica Marks Marcus Garvey’s 139th Birthday

The song almost never got recorded at all. Fred Locks wrote “Black Star Liner” in 1968 at just 18 years old, sat on it for years because of a bad experience with a producer, and only agreed to cut it after a friend told him that burying a talent means losing it.
