News Americas, NY, NY, Oct. 24, 2026: This is the Guyana-born man who confessed to murdering his own son. The 45-year-old cane harvester was yesterday remanded to prison in Guyana after appearing before a magistrate on charges that he murdered his six-year-old son, whose body was discovered in a canal at Waterloo, West Coast Berbice, earlier this week.
Bharrat Jaikarran appeared before Magistrate Shareefah Parks at the Weldaad Magistrate’s Court, where prosecutors allege the killing occurred on October 15th at Waterloo, Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice. His mother, identified as Gowkarran, broke down in tears during the brief hearing, which several relatives also attended.
Police prosecutor Garfield Edwards told the court that the case file had been completed and legal advice obtained, and that investigations were continuing into the involvement of another suspect. The court remanded Jaikarran until November 12 and transferred the matter to the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court for further proceedings.
Orlando Jaikarran
The remand came amid the funeral of six-year-old Orlando Jaikarran, whose tragic death has shocked the nation. The Grade One pupil of Bath Primary School was laid to rest amid an outpouring of sympathy, prayers, and calls for justice. Police say Jaikarran, who lived with his three children, reported that his son, Orlando was last seen alive on the evening of October 14th. The boy’s partially decomposed body was discovered six days later, on October 20, on the northern side of Waterloo, at Water Street, Block D, Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, with police saying his head, part of his left hand, and his right foot had been severed. A post-mortem examination was conducted, but the cause of death was recorded as unascertainable because of the body’s condition.
One of his brothers, identified as Karran, reportedly awoke at about 05:00 hours the following morning and noticed that Orlando was missing. He also observed that the back door was open.
The child’s brother reportedly asked their father whether Orlando had slept with him, but he said no. They subsequently searched nearby areas, including the bush and a shop, but were unable to locate the child.
Jaikarran later went to the Fort Wellington Police Station and reported Orlando missing.
Police said they arrested the accused on October 19. During a video-recorded interview, he allegedly admitted to throwing the child into the main canal at Waterloo, Bath Settlement, after being told by a religious figure, identified as Pujari Srikshun, that Orlando was not his biological son. He allegedly claimed that Srikshun had instructed him to take the child to the canal and lay him down, after which the religious figure allegedly inflicted a chop to the child’s neck, severing his head.
REACTIONS
The case has drawn a public response from across Guyana including the government. Guyana President Irfaan Ali has thrown his support behind the death penalty for particularly heinous crimes following the killing. Human Services and Social Security Minister Dr. Vindhya Persaud condemned what she described as the use of religion and superstition to justify atrocities against children, telling a candlelight vigil Thursday evening that “no faith, no religion, no one should parade under the guise of faith and religion to do the kinds of atrocities that I’m hearing of.”
“What has happened is a monstrosity, a brutality beyond what any sensible mind can comprehend,” Persaud said, adding that she expects “a thorough investigation,” prosecution, and “the harshest penalty for anyone who committed this.”
Education Minister Sonia Parag, who joined Persaud at the vigil along with government officials, teachers, students and residents, said she intends to personally visit Bath Primary School, where Orlando was a Grade One pupil, to support his classmates and teachers. “Every ounce of what the law should do, it should do in this case,” Parag added.
