The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) confirmed that, on Friday, November 11, just after midnight, the Cayman Islands Coast Guard (CICG) and the RCIPS Air Operations Unit were on patrol when they came upon a commercial fishing vessel in Cayman Islands territorial waters near George Town. The Coast Guard team had reason to stop and search the vessel, and during the search, five kilos suspected of being cocaine were discovered.

According to the RCIPS, the vessel was occupied by three Honduran males, ages 59, 42 and 39. All three men were subsequently arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the importation of cocaine.

Following a joint CICG and RCIPS investigation, all three men have now been formally charged for this offense of Being Concerned with the Importation of Cocaine. They appeared before the court on Wednesday, November 15, where they were remanded in custody, to return on November 22, 2022.

Commenting upon the vessel interception, Commander Robert Scotland, head of the CICG said:

This interception is only one example of the CICG and RCIPS dedication to keeping illegal drugs from reaching our streets. It makes me extremely proud to see the level of commitment and professionalism being displayed by our officers during these types of incidents. The results that are being produced can reassure the public that the investment of providing the requisite training, and the proper equipment, creates positive returns for the Cayman Islands.
